McDonagh v Gomez rematch

Have heard from a few sources that McDonagh/Gomez 2 is happening in Manchester at end of May, dont know who's promotion this will be on, Im sure Gomez isn't promoted by Warren anymore and I don't think McDonagh is promoted by anyone, can anyone confirm this ? Would like to see a rematch between these two

Gomez is with VIP boxing so I would expect it to be on one of their shows.

Yep - Gomez v Peter McDonough for Irish title on 23rd May 2008 at Wigan

Mike Gomez has the following to say about it "Since that night in Ireland I have not slept proper and this is the chance to cleanse myself and then move on – Steve Wood has delivered big time for me here and believe me when I say that I will smash this guy who has made a name out of me turning my back . Yes I did turn my back , but I am no quitter and this fight will turn the corner and take me back to where I should be – a champion"

did anything come of that betting 'scandel' ?

You know what I like Gomez, jesus hes had a hell of an early childhood and invloved in so much trouble! See his wikipedia link below

I wrote that wikipedia article and I am really suprised that this fight is on again - never thought it would happen - I will 100% be in attendance - I have the feeling the crowd could be full to the brim with less than savoury characters!

He said he was tired of the sport(I had him winning every round till then so it wasn't a matter of being busted up) .

An investigation took place , only one bookie had suspended betting and they were the only ones not to comply with the investigation . Which is odd considering they were the ones making public that they suspended betting , it seems they were only trying to get publicity . The investigation found no wrongdoing(probably due to lack of evidence , although that's not saying anything was actually wrong)

Both fighters purses were paid , personally I think Gomez did just actually want to quit and there was no money on it . But the way he did it was very weird .

Looking forward to them getting it straight this time.

Gomez should have no problems. I heard that Gomez went out on the piss the night before the first McDonagh fight and took him too lightly.

Anyone else hear that rumor? McDonagh wasn't going anywhere that night- was losing the fight, but at least he was prepared like a pro. Drinking before a fight is totally disrespectful to an opponent. If that's truw, he deserved to lose in the way he did.

yeah I've got a spare £500 and wanted to know what round he was going to quit this time - just kiddin!!

What you could find out is how Jeff Thomas' injury is coming along and when he'll be back in the ring.

I meant if you were going to the gym to speak to him. I think the two of them are both still at Rimmers, unless thats changed.

Wasnt Mike supposed to get married in November - did that happen?

As its a vip fight it'll either be on sky on a maloney undercard (maybe) or more likely on channel M as they now have a deal with VIP... Sure Mr Wood will pop on at some point to enlighten us.

As Jamie is fighting in May, and doesn't appear to be fighting on the Hatton undercard as I was told, perhaps it'll be the 23rd.

Michael Gomez goes for redemption against Peter McDonagh in a 10-rounder in Wigan next month.
At stake is McDonagh's Irish lightweight title.
McDonagh, of course, won the title when he forced Gomez to turn and surrender in the fifth round in Dublin in January 2006. "Since that night in Ireland I have not slept proper and this is the chance to cleanse myself and then move on," said puncher Gomez, who was born in Dublin and had 'bossed' the first four rounds against McDonagh but unravelled in much the same way he did against the likes of Hungarian Laszlo Bognar and Londoner Kevin Lear after failing to subdue them early.
Calls of a 'fix' were ludicrous.
Still, Gomez retired afterwards but made his way back last year and secured a crack at the British super-featherweight title held by Leeds man Carl Johanneson and went to war in his customary fashion but Johanneson proved too strong in the sixth round, although Gomez bitterly protested the stoppage. A pro at 17, the 30-year-old Manchester brawler is an emotional, erratic performer who can look devastating some nights, fragile the next (and he's always liable to run out of puff). He is the only man to have beaten Alex Arthur (destroyed in five rounds) and still represents a threat domestically, given Arthur has never shown any inclination to clean up his record and Aberdeen lightweight prospect Lee McAllister recently (seemingly) decided against taking him on. One of Michael's comeback wins is over useful Dewsbury man Yousef Al Hamidi (three rounds, body shots). He's especially dangerous in the early rounds of a fight. You have to respect McDonagh for facing him again.
The London-based Galwayman was jubilant when he came through two years ago but then essentially priced himself out of fights and wound up in Italy against the useful Giuseppe Lauri and was stopped for the first time in his career (six rounds on cuts; Lauri was winning). The 30-year-old McDonagh is not a puncher but a gritty, well-schooled, durable boxer with plenty of stamina and good opponents on his record (most of whom did get the better of him). He's the champion, too, which still counts for something these days, although Gomez is the house fighter and should be in shape after all the training for McAllister.
The latter tilts the balance Gomez's way. Fit and fired up, Michael can erase the ghosts of Dublin.
