I used to use "BBE" boots and then shortly before I finished Billy Hardy's "McGurK".

In the gym I have now the boxing equipment is "Pro-Tec" and "BBE" and the gloves, pads etc are "McGurk". All British manufacturers.

The boots in Graham's link look good, I've trained with a few lads who fought in "Export Boots" and they rated them highly.

Remember though you have : BBE, Lonsdale, Title, Pro-Tec, McGurk and any others I have forgotton who all make excellent equipment (including boots) and are also from these Isles.

While we are on the subject does anyone know where i can get some good quality but cheapish Boxing gloves and shorts from? Preferably in Britain, i saw some good ones on an American site but it was too good to be true as i paid but never received them

Ergo looks to be a good solid brand at respectable prices.

The best boxing stuff has got to be Cleto Reyes..expensive but worth every penny. I have had the same Reyes sparring gloves and headgear since 1993. Cheap stuff just do not last, so you would be losing out in the long run by buying cheap.

You can get custom shorts now from a lot of boxing gear manufacturers for about £80-£100 price mark. I have got someone to design and do my shorts for a very reasonable price here in Wales.

If you want cheap stuff, but probably used, you can always try ebay....I wouldn't, but you never know, you might pick up a bargain there.

I might add that the trend with pro fighters these days seems to be with Grant boxing gear.

I'm not being funny mate, but how often do you spar?

I know I couldn't wear the same shit for ten years.

I spar twice weekly.......but despite that, I use my sparring gloves a lot on the pads and bags for 4 days a week, they have stayed intact forever. The only thing that has started going is the buckle strap on the headgear, but the actual headguard is still in very good condition.

Reyes are really that good, but you would expect this quality when you pay £110 for a typical pair of Reyes sparring gloves, and £100 for a headguard.

Excuse my digging up this thread again but i have a couple of questions, excuse my vast ignorance but i am sure the pro's amongst us could tell me what are the main differences/benefits between the glove weights: 10 oz, 12, 14, 16 etc

And secondly there is a sports store selling 10 oz gloves at a ridiculous;y cheap price compared to the other stuff i have brought, the make is "Lonsdale", is this any good as a make? The other gloves i brought were Grant and they were quite expensive.

The reason the 10oz gloves will be so cheap is because they aren't really any good for anything. They're far too light for sparring, I suppose you could use them on the pads, but I wouldn't say it was worth buying them just for that. Lonsdale is a great make though.

You should be looking at buying 16 ounce gloves for sparring in the gym - possibly 14's if you're lightish and if you're big, and can find them, maybe 18's.

Some lads use bag gloves on the heavybag, but I, and most other people I've trained with, either use their sparring gloves or have a seperate pair of 16's/14's that are used for padding and punchbag work.

With regard to the weight of the gloves: When you can keep your hands up and throw punches for x rounds of sparring/bag/pads with 16 ounce gloves on in the gym. Imagine what it's like to put 8/10 ounce contest gloves on for a fight. They're as light as a feather and you feel like you could hold them up forever and punch holes in walls.

It depends on the brand; I purchased Reyes 10oz gloves last year, costing me £110. I use them on occasions for sparring, but only very light sparring.

I have "Reyes For Lonsdale" 14oz gloves for heavy duty sparring. I bought them back in '93 and they are still going strong. I also use them to hit the bag and pads. Those and my headgear are Reyes For Lonsdale, made in Mexico; they were quite expensive but worth the money, seeing as they have lasted more than 10 years!.

FlawedGenius is right; you should use heavy gloves for training with as much padding in them as possible. Not only will this help your endurance, but they will also protect your hands a whole lot more than 8 or 10oz gloves will.

Grant or Reyes are the best quality brands; they are what the pros go for. Grant seems to be the trend nowadays, but I personally prefer Reyes (mexican). The gloves seem to mould to the shape of your hand. I haven't tried Grant stuff so cannot comment on that brand.

If you want to go cheapish, then Ergo look to be a decent enough brand; I haven't looked at the gloves, but the heavy bags and pear-shaped heavy bags are good quality, as I have tried them.

However, like everything else you only get what you pay for. If you are a pro, an aspiring pro or a dedicated amateur, you will be losing out in the long run by going cheap. In my experience, I have found Reyes to be the best, albeit the most expensive. [/quote]
