The yanks seem to be able to do a four year turn around from Olympic contender/medalist to world pro champion easily enough.
We possibly have the most talented out of all the 2004 Olympians, and the one who it was easiest to adapt to the pro ranks (being so young).
It should have been done comfortably if he was matched properly.
Yes, we have had two recent very long reigning champions (Lewis and Calzaghe) - but thankfully because its because they maintained their skills into their late thirties - not because they were champions at an exceedingly young age.
Just feed up of our fighters not deemed ready untill their mid/late 20's. Even David Haye... already talking about getting out - practically before his reign has started.

Has Povetkin been matched up with a puncher yet though unlike Khan? Byrd, Donald or Chambers are Ko artists. Chambers was outboxing him at times.stujones wrote:Khan could have adapted better than Povetkin had he been matched as Povetkin has been.Autobarn wrote:IMO Povetkin has adapted to the pros easier. Tonight just reinforced my belief that Khan is getting knocked out if/when he fights at anything approaching world level. And I am going to make a lot of money when he does. He'll be having the hype odds inflating his opponent through the roof!

Earl isn't exactly a non-puncher either.

Chambers is better than a bloated Gairy St Clair. Harder to hit and a sharper puncher as well.Max Molyneux wrote:Has Povetkin been matched up with a puncher yet though unlike Khan? Povetkin has adapted better because he's had massive ama experience, time as a pro kickboxer as well and came into boxing well schooled, as a fully developed man. However, he still has fitted to the pros more seamlessly.
Khan does have that amateur legacy, like Andre Ward he just probably will always look a bit like an amateur boxer.
vs Byrd & Chambers yes, as he had to hit around the tight guards of his opponents who were very negative. when he fights some big oaf who has some target that isn't covered, he'll look shit hot.Max Molyneux wrote:Povetkin relies on his workrate and volume too much, not much movement to avoid taking a pasting from Klitschko and then people will say he was rushed too soon.Autobarn wrote:IMO Povetkin has adapted to the pros easier. The boy is going backwards
Khan looked like a childish amateur
hitting after the bell, those ridiculous piston like
extended arm flurries what the hell is that about!
Warrens post fight interview spoke volumes
The ex superfeather from the land of the bogs and the little people
may be excited by it all; but the real boxing fans have had enough
The moment Kahn steps trough the ropes with a credible opponent my money's going on "the other guy"
You can fool some of the people some of the time..............blah....blah...blah!
comparing Kahn to Ali in the fights promotion clips........ How dare they

It's an interesting one in terms of the next fight. Khan and family are desperate to go for that record.
Warren on the hand knows Khan's weaknesses, if he goes for a title challenge it will please Khan and will help re the contract situation, but there is a good chance he will lose. If he pads his record a bit more and after the end of the year Khan leaves he's a bit screwed.
Either way I think Warren is in trouble as there isn't many places for him to go with only one champion available now Diaz and Pac are tied up.

I think Khan's got a fair few fights to through before he should be put in a world title fight. It's going to be a fairly big jump between fighting guys like St.Clair and Kristjansen to taking on someone like Campbell or Casamayor, it could well be too much for him at this stage. Then what happens? He goes back to fighting nobodies again?
He's got to be put in their with some dangerous punchers to learn more.

Warren has made a mess of this in my opinion, and I think he knows it.
Khan wants that title fight next, and probably more importantly so do the people who he really listens to, i.e his family.
Warren will have to work his magic to keep everyone happy, but it's clear that Khan is far from ready.
But that's the problem you get with pushing him as a headline act and also as the second coming.

In answer to your very first line - no way should we rush Khan now - no chance - British Boxing is looking strong - we need the likes of Khan to keep the flag flying which is why we shouldn't be impatient.
I fully acknowledge though some of Khan's EARLY fights in my opinion were a complete and utter waste of space and thus I can see why some fans have no sympathy now.
I like to think I am Mr W arren's fiercest critic - any chance I have to have a pop I will continue to do so - but I remain convinced at last he has Khan fighting at the right level just for now - b*llocks to McGuigan stating lets see him in one more testing fight - for me Khan needs another 2 or 3 testing fights - as long of course they are decent tests - lets see Dean Powell who is W arren's matchmaker now earn his dough by finding some decent opposition for Khan.
For me Khan will not be ready for World class oppostion until the early part of 2009 - if he goes in any sooner he will get beaten - okay sometimes a defeat can do a fighter wonders - my problem is if Khan gets beaten we will be back at square one all over again.
I will say again - Mr W arren has a massive problem with Amir Khan - Team Khan want big fights - but clearly in my view Khan is not quite ready - but the problem for W arren is I am told Khan's contract is just about up - and thus if Khan does not get what he wants then he may just may go and find someone else to promote him ... without Khan in his stable and with Calzaghe due to retire in the next few months or so I would suggest Frank W arren is under a bit of pressure to get his future flagship fighters future sorted ... maybe I am wrong but I don't think so!!!

he hasn't been f*ckin tested..! seriously all i've ever seen from Khan is A1 handspeed, everything is else is average at best.. his upper body always looks twice the size of his opponent, who is always in defensive mode after one minute.. it's still the same.. he hasn't fought anyone near their best or left home soil yet..
where is he in the W.B.C, W.B.A and I.B.F ratings..? nowhere..

Povetkin's going to go up against Klitschko and he earned his title shot by winning a four man tournament.
Had Brock beaten Chambers, then Povetkin would have beaten a puncher. Can't choose whom you're fighting in an elimination tournament, can you?
Khan sadly fights like an amateur, like Andre Ward, and both are easily hurt. Let's say these guys win world titles. They're not going to be any better than Mark Breland, something that will be taken in the negative.

Re: Amir Khan - Lets Look After Him!!!
I agree with your sentiments.Spud wrote:I never thought I would say this - Mr W arren and Team Khan need to be patient.
I honestly believe a world title fight is a tadge too soon for Amir Khan - yes he was impressive against the dane this evening and yes I think Amir Khan could become world class eventually.
But whats the bloody rush??
Once you get to being a world champion of the more reputable belts it is a dam sight harder keeping onto the belts - my attitude is Khan is moving along okay but world titles not yet.
You look at Romanov for the European Title - I even think that fight for Khan is a very tough one.
Mr W arren has a big problem - Khan's contract runs out soon - does Mr W arren deliver the world title to hang onto Khan's contract or does Mr W arren tell Team Khan its too soon.
No no and no I am not being negative - I am pleased with Khan's progression - he is doing well and learning fight by fight - but he is not world class yet!!!
I like Khan & I believe that he can go far, but he's still learning; but thankfully, he's progressing well.
He just needs to stop being fixated with being the youngest British world champ ever: it just doesn't mean anything these days, especially when you can get a boxing world title belt by opening a box of Frosties!
To address the issue Spud raised. You could see a certain tension in the presser or weigh in or whatever interview where ITV said to Warren you've only got Khan another year so will you put him into a quick world title fight? Warren didn't seem to like the question and curtly said "No."
So what does Warren do? Knowing that Khan will leave him, perhaps throw him in way over his head? Make him more good money for fighting a guy no one knows about? Get him a learning fight that will actually prepare Khan mentally, physically & tactically?
It does look like a bit of a crisis. I don't know how it'll be resolved. Or is it all just a big publicity stunt, this tension between overeager youth and protective age, to help make every Khan fight an event, a fight before the big one...We've seen Haye and Booth masterfully mislead the media on with their big weight issue...Warren is able to manipulate through the media, though normally in the most prosaic of tell-the-layman-what-to-think manner. Were they acting?

Khan Is In the top 15 In the 3 sanctions as well, not just the WBO.Greg Nicholas wrote:he hasn't been f*ckin tested..! seriously all i've ever seen from Khan is A1 handspeed, everything is else is average at best.. his upper body always looks twice the size of his opponent, who is always in defensive mode after one minute.. it's still the same.. he hasn't fought anyone near their best or left home soil yet..

I think the WBC has him at least 13.
I know Khan is rated at 5 with the WBC....
I wouldn't put Khan in with Romanov at the moment nevermind Casamayor or Campbell.
I actually wonder whether Khan will maybe go down the WBC route now. I can't see Khan and Frank persisting with the WBO route because they have Peterson and Juan Diaz in front of them in the rankings. Plus that's not mentioning that Casamayor is the interim champion, so if Campbell doesn't fight Casamayor and vacates (which I think he will) then it will probably be Casamayor vs. Peterson or even Diaz for the WBO belt.
I look at the WBC rankings and there's not too much there. Khan's already rated at #5 in their system and if Frank could get fighters like Pitalua, Santa Cruz (I like this guy) or Funeka over here then that could set him up for a title shot. And who knows, if Pacquiao can beat David Diaz then he will probably vacate when if he moves up again to allegedly fight Hatton or Malignaggi. Then that would leave Khan to fight for a vacant world-title and a really credible one as well.
I think Frank has to put Khan in with a puncher now. He needs to be tested before he moves onto world-class opponents. If I were Khan's promoter then I would go down this route to him getting his first world-title.
1 - Miguel Angel Huerta (simply to move up the rankings)
2 - Ali Funeka (same as above but this guy is a puncher)
3 - Zahir Raheem (first real step-up)
4 - Yuri Romanov (first major belt)
5 - Edner Cherry (very durable and would be classed as a gimme really)
6 - Jose Armando Santa Cruz (maybe in a final eliminator)
7 - A world-title fight for the WBC belt if Pacman beats Diaz and moves up again
I think that Khan really needs to forget about becoming Britain's youngest ever world champion, I really do. If he's rushed against limited opponents like Kristjansen and St. Clair and Earl then he's going to get a shock when he's put in against a super-tough and durable fighter like Casamayor or Campbell. If he went by my list of opponents then he would get the relevant experience to develop into a great multiple-weight world champion in my opinion.
