Well done to Choi and also Jack Doughety, I was very disapointed that ITV didn't deem either of them worthy of a post fight interview.
Choi had just won the biggest fight of his life, and all the ITV team could talk about was the loser.
Derry didn't look good, he got caught right from the first bell, and couldn't get his head together after that, he didn't listen to his corner.
Watching Choi he reminded me of a mini version of Nigel Benn, when Benn was at supermiddle, Choi doesn't have the same power, but the big swings from the right hand and they way he lined up to fight after being separated by the ref made me think of Benn.
Hope |Choi gets a shot at one of the bigger titles now

Agree with that.overhand_right wrote:Your right, he is domestic class. Thats why the WBU belt is so insulting.
People at home thinking they were watching a world title fight... dear god!!
In the after fight interview, Mathews openly said " I didn't have to fight the guy " which is totally true, but thats not " World Champion " thinking. A World Champion, by definition, should be obliged to take anyone on.

I didn't care about the title asDerry was fighting a good opponent who has taught him things and can come back from this loss If he wants to.
He has talent, he just needs to work on not getting hit with hooks so much as Simpson knocked him down with left hook too I think.
The Scottish posters are just bitter about the Simpson fight yet defended the 2nd Morris fight when the cut wasn't enough to have the fight stopped only because John was a Scot.

This is one of the more bemusing posts of recent times.Terry D wrote:Choi is pretty good in interviews, just have to listen carefully. In one post-fight interview this careful listening was hampered by his semi-nude state, the presence of what seemed like all of Mongolia in the dressing room, plus the fact he had his arms around me, and he was also explaining that when he hits a person he feels the 'ping' of his knuckle.
Delighted for the guy, Derry can come back, glad Choi got to show his wares on a national TV station, plus it means his cat did not die in vain, she went all the way to the top, of his head.
Also very pleased for Jack Doughty. I think Sweetscience said his shows take place in a shed in Oldham, pretty much spot-on, they are spit-and-sawdust shows but who can argue with hotpot for lunch, a corner man who runs a local petting zoo, and the seemingly never-ending battles between Darren Stubbs-Hastings Rasani. Alex-Matvienko fought a decent bout with Tony Randell on one of those shows. I think Mark Thompson fought on one of them also, a bad tempered little battle, although properly fought, with one of the Smith lads, think it was Ernie.
I quite like the trip over to Shaw.
Aye, why is it sad? I aint sad, the guy is a twat, loved EVERY second of the beating, if you aint happy about it dont read it. I don't want to speak for NEBF as he is more than capable of doing that for himself but maybe he recognises that Derry stepped up and fought a guy who nobody else would go near. None of the Feathers have ever wanted anything to do with Choi but Derry didn't shirk the challenge. He fought the wrong fight and paid the price. I thought his sportsmanship in defeat was admirable and he offered no excuses other than to congratulate Choi and say that the better man had won.Top Dog wrote:Aye, why is it sad? Derry's a really nice kid and has got time for anyone. Your personal attacks hold no water as I know for a fact you don't know the boy (or you wouldn't be of that opinion).
Having lost the WBU title he will almost certainly become mandatory challenger for the British Title (because he holds a win over the champion) for which he was previously inelligable. That has to be the way back for Derry and should he be good enough to pick up a Lonsdale belt (for what it's worth I still pick him over the other British Feathers) then he will concentrate at that level (and possibly European) for another 18 months or so. Maybe when he is 26-27 he will be physically mature enough to compete at the top level. Time will be the judge

I find that surprising, as i thought the loss was partly down to weight making, the way he went from the body shots.DavidPayne wrote:Derry mentioned he was on weight well in advance, had no excuses and would indeed be number 1 for British or Commonwealth.
I admire his humility in defeat.
He just seemed drained in there after the 1st round.
If it wasn't weight making that drained him, then maybe he should look at the nutrition he's taking on board during training.
A rematch with Simpson would be good , but i feel Simpson has progressed from the first match, he was excellent against Morris. So it wouldn't be an easy match for Derry.
Man, you start off with "I dont want to speak for NEBF" and then you do?? Listen mate, I dont need to personally know someone to have an opinion, he comes over as a cocky, big headed, dirty fighter. So that's good enough for me, so for now he's officially a pricklsg wrote:I don't want to speak for NEBF as he is more than capable of doing that for himself but maybe he recognises that Derry stepped up and fought a guy who nobody else would go near. A mate of mine knows Derry Matthews and says he is a nice bloke - but I know why a lot of people (including me) would have been cheering from their seats when Choi battered him on Saturday - that last fight vs Simpson was a complete discrace to boxing and I personally think it is karma bill being paid without getting all Tibetian on you all!
Derry was magnaminous in defeat and there was no shame to losing to Choi. He can come back from this setback but obviously needs some work on his PR.
I always remember disliking Ryan Rhodes (or his 'spice boy' persona) and then I met him and he was a really nice feller and then became a fan!
How they come across on TV is not necessaily the way they are in real life and I guess this is the way it is with Derry Matthews.

In Derrys defense, he's not in there to tickle the opponent, he isn't the cleanest of boxers, but its a hard sport.
Also when he lost on Saturday, he was hurt and humiliated, but got off his stool to walk round the ring holding Choi's hand in the air. That shows a classy person in my book.
I've never met Derry , but i can't see what the problem is.

True but compound this with biased referreeing and judging and then you can go from 'man of the people' to public enemy no1.Old bones Ian wrote:In Derrys defense, he's not in there to tickle the opponent, he isn't the cleanest of boxers, but its a hard sport.

The Simpson debacle was a disgrace and Saturdays performance from the ref was a bigger disgrace... the worst thing I have ever seen in a British ring and I have been watching boxing for 30 years! Thank God Choi brought his own referee in his fists!
Again, I have got it from a source I trust that Derry Matthews is a good bloke however his ring persona and him has a man can be seperated can they not?

you're off the mark with that one TopDog I am not and never have been a Derry Matthews "fan". While we're on I'm a United fan, lifelong so I don't particularly like scousers anyway and that's ridiculous as I've barely been to the place my whole life.
I have met Choi a few occasions and I wanted him to win the fight actually even though in reality I didn't think he would as he doesn't get to test himself regularly enough at a decent level cos of being ineligible for most titles round here (Brit C'wealth, euro etc....). He was at one point so desperate he called out Morales and Barrera after beating some fella in a tin shed in Shawe that noone had heard of.
As for Matthews I'd heard he had a dirty rep but the only time I ever saw him was in a cracker versus Andy Morris and it turned out to be something of an upset....he battered Morris from pillar to post.....I remember thinking he was a tough tough lad and respected his effort big time. That's why I just think that whatever our affiliations may be to various boxers on here we should try to avoid lowering ourselves to personally insulting them, at the end of the day many of them are in there trying and putting it on the line the same as each other.
It's a littleknown fact that Matthew Hatton isn't my favourite boxer but you won't find one personal , non-boxing or groundless criticism I've made about him in all my posts. Well I think I once said he had a bonce like lex luther..........but apart from that.
Derry has impressed me before with his fighting heart against Morris and on Saturday he impressed me with his magnamamous attitude in light of a very disappointing heavy stoppage. He will come back from it a more experienced fighter.
Choi brought his own ref, his fists......made me chuckle anyway.Carlos-Wigan wrote:True but compound this with biased referreeing and judging and then you can go from 'man of the people' to public enemy no1.Old bones Ian wrote:In Derrys defense, he's not in there to tickle the opponent, he isn't the cleanest of boxers, but its a hard sport.
