When will Amir Khan jump ship?
When fighters get a certain level of popularity they become big enough to promote themselves and get more of the money. Hatton and Hamed went that way years ago. Now Amir Khan is a national celebrity and has massive drawing power, surely its only a matter of time before he becomes self promoted the same way the others did.
I think it will benefit SN to see Amir take a first defeat in the next 18 months. That way he won't be quite big enough to leave

Apart from Robin Reid, Terry Marsh, Joan Guzman, Gavin Rees, Alex Arthur of course. Your memory is being infected by your blinkered BS.STP wrote:Ricky Hatton is the only fighter allegedly allegedly has ever 'guided' from first pro fight to world title win. And that took eight years and 39 fights, and 25 years.
Warren isn't very good.
And compared to who else, who's done better?

boxingchat, speaking as a fan I think FW would get far less stick if he just stopped promoting WBU fights and stupid WBO Intercontinental tiles and the like. I mean WBO titles are contentious enough. What happened to plain old straightforward international contests, why these mickey mouse titles? You can schedule a fight for 12 rounds if that's the argument and surely a TV exec wouldn't want their viewers being misled as to the importance of what they are watching. And I presume there are sanctioning fees too. This stuff is killing boxing.boxingchat wrote:Apart from Robin Reid, Terry Marsh, Joan Guzman, Gavin Rees, Alex Arthur of course. I had to explain to my missus that contrary to what was being said on the telly Derry Matthews was in fact a prospect fighting a dangerous journeyman, and that it was a bogus title. Quite understandably she failed to get to grips with this bizarre concept, asking questions like 'why are they calling it a world title then?' Surely there are enough of these sanctioning bodies as it is. FW could do us all a favour and stop promoting the lesser ones surely?

I think if you actually looked at the financials of some of these promoters it would be clear that these titles are doing the absolute opposite of killing boxing. They are allowing boxers, promoters, trainers, etc., etc. to make more money, plain and simple. More people will watch a World Title match than a 12 round contest with no title on the line.Flump wrote:boxingchat, speaking as a fan I think FW would get far less stick if he just stopped promoting WBU fights and stupid WBO Intercontinental tiles and the like. Thats what ITV said on Sat night, they showed an interview with Frank last year and in it it said about him only being signed for another year si I would say Aug-Sept 2008.Spud wrote:Is it correct Khan's contract runs out very soon?
Its not an if or a but its a when it happens. Khan has set his whole entourage up like Naz did in the latter part of his career and its for a reason to promote himself and make some money.
Do TV cough up more money if it's a WBU fight then? Or do you think it attracts the casual fan? If it's the former they're a mug, if it's the latter then they're being misled. I'm all for fighters earning more money, God knows they deserve it but it's just the deception I don't like.bridportboxer wrote:I think if you actually looked at the financials of some of these promoters it would be clear that these titles are doing the absolute opposite of killing boxing. Don't have the answers, but I am sure the likes of allegedly wouldn't use the WBU if he wasn't making money out of it. I guess in some African and Eastern European countries they can get more from TV companies for a World title fight, don't know about here though.Flump wrote:Do TV cough up more money if it's a WBU fight then? Just to add Choi is ranked 5 in the world by this website and has only lost 4 fights, and has won 19 of his 27 by KO, so hardly a journeyman.Flump wrote:boxingchat, speaking as a fan I think FW would get far less stick if he just stopped promoting WBU fights and stupid WBO Intercontinental tiles and the like. I thought Reid began his career in obscurity. Joan Guzman? Warren must've been doign some seriosu work in the Dominican Republic!
As to "world title win", how have you got Alex Arthur in there? He has to beat Guzman to be world champ.
Must be because it's easier to promote a fight by giving the illusion of it being a "world championship fight." Any three letters beginning in W for world or I for international. Even Hatton, with all his popularity, with his Ring mag recognition, needs the IBO belt on the line.Flump wrote:Do TV cough up more money if it's a WBU fight then? The thing that gets me is how anyone can look at a WBU match or even sometimes a bad WBO fight, and not wonder why the quality is not world class? Maybe boxing went under for a while because ppl thought the world champs were so shit, with no good challengers out there!
you tell him. and STP aint no trollAutobarn wrote:from 1st pro fight to world title win?boxingchat wrote:Apart from Robin Reid, Terry Marsh, Joan Guzman, Gavin Rees, Alex Arthur of course. I'd say he was before the fight, the way he looked on Saturday, agreed, he looked more than a dangerous journeyman.bridportboxer wrote:Just to add Choi is ranked 5 in the world by this website and has only lost 4 fights, and has won 19 of his 27 by KO, so hardly a journeyman.Flump wrote:boxingchat, speaking as a fan I think FW would get far less stick if he just stopped promoting WBU fights and stupid WBO Intercontinental tiles and the like. Hatton needed the tuning up, he wouldn't of got a world title with another promoter.STP wrote:Ricky Hatton is the only fighter allegedly allegedly has ever 'guided' from first pro fight to world title win. And that took eight years and 39 fights, and 25 years.

If he wasn't that good then why are huge staduims filled out In the Uk? You don't get Hennessey or Maloney doing that, they mostly stick to leisure centres or York Hall.
Maybe because he was front and back pages (and covering 4-5 sports pages) of 4-5 national newspapers about 30 times in four weeks, and has appeared on every last chatshow on every TV channel over the last 18 months (especially the last 6-8 months).
If Junior Witter was handed that exposure, he'd be selling 55,000 tickets in a few hours or whatever it is, too.

The history books are littered with them.
Boxers getting beyond their station, assuming the leaches (and I include family in that) will do a great job managing and promoting ALL in the interests of the fighter (yeah right).
Stick to what you're good at.
In Khan's case fighting.
If it ain't Warren then find a Promotor who's gonna deliver better, with more in the pot for yourself.
Khan is an accident waiting to happen in my view if he steps up in class too early.
Like him or loathe him, Frank's done a good job with him - and if he stays will continue to do so.
What the fornicate do the Khan family know about the boxing business ?
Same applies to Hatton, same applied to Naz.
Hatton has done nothing or earned more than he had the potential to do so under Warren.
Naz - well enough said.

That WBO ranking could be a curse. I'm not sure Khan is ready. If he does win it could take home adv and pulling through by the skin of his teeth. Would he be able to keep the belts with mandatories pressing? Or would it suddenly be, he's outgrown the division and needs to move up to 140?
Zoff would have been a more purposeful fight than Kristjansen. OK the Dane has a draw with Zoff but I'm not talking about paper records. I'm talking about a fighter who could have posed Khan several riddles to fathom. A fighter who knows how to spoil, how to make you work when you don't want to, who can deflect your punches and counter, albeit with not much power.
Having a WBO rating (#2) means it's highly unlikely that Khan will fight the European champ Romanov which is really unfortunate. Romanov would keep the EBU title one more time for the payday. But if you leave it too long, the mandatory - Melero - will have to be accomodated.
