The British Boxing Board of Control are investigating the possibility that the gloves of the new International Boxing Organisation cruiserweight champion, Carl Thompson, were tampered with before his victory over Sebastian Rothmann in Sheffield.
Thompson stopped Rothmann in the ninth round of a thrilling battle last weekend after seemingly being on the brink of defeat.
However, before the contest began at the Ponds Forge Leisure Centre, Thompson's gloves were changed following an in-the-ring examination by referee Richie Davies.
Now it transpires that the gloves that Thompson was not allowed to wear were taken by BBB of C officials and are the subject of further tests to determine whether the damage Davies discovered was accidental or deliberate.
Thumb-attached gloves have been compulsory in world boxing for more than a decade and Board secretary Simon Block said: "The thumbs on the gloves were detached - and now we are seeking to establish how they have become detached. The board are taking this extremely seriously."
Ed Levine, president of the IBO, added he would wait for the completion of the Board of Control tests and listen to the evidence before deciding if any further action was necessary.
Ricky Hatton is likely to box the unbeaten, big-punching Kelson Pinto of Brazil at the MEN Arena, Manchester, on April 3.
The 12-round fight will be for either the World Boxing Organisation Interim light-welterweight title or for the vacant championship.
This depends on Zab Judah, the current WBO champion, who is moving up to box the world welterweight title holder, Cory Spinks, later in April. Judah may vacate the light-welterweight championship to do this, or be asked to relinquish it by the WBO.

Very strange if both thumbs were detached - one you could put down to accidental, but two........
Still it's not like you'd have any advantage. If your opponent complains of a thumb in the eye, of course the ref will immediately notice if your gloves looks dodgy, and all you'd be left with is big trouble.
Is Pinto front runner now bennie? That's the one I'd like to see, but I wasn't holding out much hope.

Sky-TV were seemingly confident of Pinto being Hatton's opponent on Ringside last night, so it does look like it. But who really knows?MightyWarrior wrote:Very strange if both thumbs were detached - one you could put down to accidental, but two........

Talk is cheap...imagine that........I can see the Fight poster now!
David and Goliath "THE RETURN",how many of you have actually seen Pinto fight?
Watch a few of his fights then tell me in all honesty wether you think the fight will actually materialise.
Apart from not being allowed to fight anyone:
1.Under the age of 30
2.Taller than him
3.More than a 50:50 knockout ratio
4.If they have been in the country more than 48 hrs.
5.If they are actually a serious threat.
6.If their name is Junior Witter.
7.Unless Frank hasnt said it will defiantely not be Fighter X cos then it usually is.
I hope this clears things up
I doubt it

Put that down to Maurice HARD CORE who was in THOMPSONS corner, there was a similar situation when Naz fought, the thumb attachment was cut, this eventually led to the gloves being changed,HARDCORE was there that night too lol.
Maybe they thought it would giveTHOMPSON NAZ like powers, seems it did that night.

Maurice Core once took part in the worst ABA final in history...with Nicky Piper. Maybe he blamed the gloves!theguru wrote:Put that down to Maurice HARD CORE who was in THOMPSONS corner, there was a similar situation when Naz fought, the thumb attachment was cut, this eventually led to the gloves being changed,HARDCORE was there that night too lol.
