Who was more popular in Britain - TYSON or Lennox Lewis?

Post by nasty »

I remember when Tyson came into Britain for the Francis fight and was mobbed by 7,000 people at the airport

He was also mobbed by 10,000 in Brixton if I remember rightly

He also drew a crowd of 20,000 in manchester fighting a stiff like Francis

His 2 week trip to England is 3rd behind only Diana'a death and sept 11th in the all time list of News Print and Coverage!

Why has Lewis never had this following in Britain even though he is British and Tyson an American?

What do you Brits think, Was Tyson more Popular than Lewis?

I don't think Tyson went to Toxteth, I'd be surprised if he did, there was no real reason for him to go to Liverpool.

Do you mean Brixton, nasty? He drew a huge crowd there.

Tyson was and is miles more popular than Lewis with both people and boxing fans in the uk.

Its no contest.

I was at Heathrow when Tyson first arrived for his fight with Francis.

It was pandemoneum.

I still get shivers up my spine thinking about it.

Tyson is a dirty rapist, he should have been greeted with a hail of stones and swinging bats, not cheering and back slapping.

I loved it when Holyfield and Lewis beat him.

Why do people idolise him, yet berrate other nonces and sex beasts?

Tyson was by far more popular than lennox lewis ever was.

However popularity has nothing to do with boxing ability, just ask Larry Holmes.

Because Tyson got shafted by the courts in america.

If the rape trial was here, Tyson would have walked free.

What drugs?, when?

Tyson has never been into narcotics.

Big deal I know but not exactly what you expect from a world champ challenger and ex all time great.
I was under the impression or illusion (please educate me if I am wrong) that he was pretty well connected when it came to ahem , how shall I put this errr partying hard.

Are you referring to drink or the other stuff that makes people talk bullshit for hours on end?

Both dude and this is paper talk of course, but I do remember a foto of him smoking something through a shell out in the windies, dont look that promising.
Hes been on anti depressent a long time thats well publicised and to some extent they are worse than recreational drugs.

Anyway please dont think Im here to knock tyson he was a great fighter but nor am I gonna defend him and I do think he has brought a lot of it on himself Im afraid.

Going back to the original thread I can only answer comprehensively for myself and Lewis is far more popular in my head and heart.

I dont know whether the brit public truly think of tyson being popular in latter years more of the unpredicatibilty factor that goes with it, which in turn turned a once great fighter into a freak show hellbent on self destruction, though it does sadden me to say it. Its only echoing tyson's own thoughts in fairness.

J,
Don't forget that Tyson had his win over Andrezj Golota turned into a no contest after they found evidence of cannabis use from his drugs test samples.

Whilst not quite on the same scale as injecting smack into the vein in your dick, it's still not idea pre-fight prep for a heavyweight contender.
