In Derrys defense, he's not in there to tickle the opponent, he isn't the cleanest of boxers, but its a hard sport.
Also when he lost on Saturday, he was hurt and humiliated, but got off his stool to walk round the ring holding Choi's hand in the air. That shows a classy person in my book.

True but compound this with biased referreeing and judging and then you can go from 'man of the people' to public enemy no1.

The Simpson debacle was a disgrace and Saturdays performance from the ref was a bigger disgrace... the worst thing I have ever seen in a British ring and I have been watching boxing for 30 years! Thank God Choi brought his own referee in his fists!

Again, I have got it from a source I trust that Derry Matthews is a good bloke however his ring persona and him has a man can be seperated can they not?

The ref did seem determined to let Derry continue no matter what. Short of standing holding him up and putting his own arms under his armpits and punching Choi himself, it's hard to see how many more favours he could have given the home fighter. How many times was Matthew down, was it five?

The refereeing was far from good, Dave Parris is a good ref , but he didn't look fair on Saturday.
Worst one was when Derry got battered across the ring and the ropes held him up, Parris didn't give him a count.

I don't want to speak for NEBF as he is more than capable of doing that for himself but maybe he recognises that Derry stepped up and fought a guy who nobody else would go near. None of the Feathers have ever wanted anything to do with Choi but Derry didn't shirk the challenge. He fought the wrong fight and paid the price. I thought his sportsmanship in defeat was admirable and he offered no excuses other than to congratulate Choi and say that the better man had won.

Derry's a really nice kid and has got time for anyone. Your personal attacks hold no water as I know for a fact you don't know the boy (or you wouldn't be of that opinion).

Having lost the WBU title he will almost certainly become mandatory challenger for the British Title (because he holds a win over the champion) for which he was previously inelligable. That has to be the way back for Derry and should he be good enough to pick up a Lonsdale belt (for what it's worth I still pick him over the other British Feathers) then he will concentrate at that level (and possibly European) for another 18 months or so. Maybe when he is 26-27 he will be physically mature enough to compete at the top level. Time will be the judge

I have met Choi a few occasions and I wanted him to win the fight actually even though in reality I didn't think he would as he doesn't get to test himself regularly enough at a decent level cos of being ineligible for most titles round here (Brit C'wealth, euro etc....). He was at one point so desperate he called out Morales and Barrera after beating some fella in a tin shed in Shawe that noone had heard of.

As for Matthews I'd heard he had a dirty rep but the only time I ever saw him was in a cracker versus Andy Morris and it turned out to be something of an upset....he battered Morris from pillar to post.....I remember thinking he was a tough tough lad and respected his effort big time. That's why I just think that whatever our affiliations may be to various boxers on here we should try to avoid lowering ourselves to personally insulting them, at the end of the day many of them are in there trying and putting it on the line the same as each other.

It's a littleknown fact that Matthew Hatton isn't my favourite boxer but you won't find one personal , non-boxing or groundless criticism I've made about him in all my posts. Well I think I once said he had a bonce like lex luther..........but apart from that.
Derry has impressed me before with his fighting heart against Morris and on Saturday he impressed me with his magnamamous attitude in light of a very disappointing heavy stoppage. He will come back from it a more experienced fighter.

Listen my man, we'll just need to agree to disagree, or whatever the saying is I just dont like the guy, bottomline, must admit I'm the same with Khan, good boxer but a total fudd of a guy.

the rocket is in fact correct.......I knew it was against a short haired tough manc in Manchester cos I remember the fight had that Manc-Scouse edge to it and Derry got a very popular "away win"........apologies to Andy Morris first of all on that one.

side note.....I wasn't saying Foster never gave it a good go, not so much a hammering for 12 rounds as a case of Derry surprisingly (to those outside his camp obviously)....just getting better and better as the fight wore on. In fact that was the most impressive thing cos no matter how Foster rallied Derry ALWAYS seemed to step up a gear.

Cut to Foster versus Arthur and I was amazed at what an improved , more dangerous fighter Foster looked in that one.

Well said my man. Khan's a really nice guy. Have got to know him over last 12 months and he and his agent Asif Ali are gentlemen. Wouldn't get a lift off him ..... but a great kid and very friendly and unaffected.
