Except for the Louis KO all these fights were 1929-1932 - Schmeling's real prime.

schmelings real peak was 1936. he was never a better fighter than the night he beat joe louis.

schmeling was one of those guys who from 1929-38 he seemed to stay the same fighter. he didnt decline one bit during those years

For Johnson, I would go with something like:

I agree, good, but not great. No question it would have been better if he had defended the title against Jeannette,McVey, and Langford when they were close to their best.
However, the sheer volume of "good wins" that rank just below those mentioned is impressive.

Not just the fact that Johnson didn't defend his title against the 3 best challengers, who had all improved since he fought them, but going from your best 5 for Johnson. Number 1 was against a Super Middleweight, number 2 was against a Middleweight, who while probably deserving to be in the HOF was still a MW, and he lasted 20 rds against a guy some still consider the greatest heavyweight of alltime.

Some big names on Johnson's resume, but all too often they're guys way past there best (Jeffries, Fitzsimmons) guys who hadn't reached there HW peak (Langford, Jeanette, McVea) and guys who were just plain small (Burns, Ketchel, O'Brien, Jackson, Gardiner, Choynski, and of course Langford again) It's one thing to call Johnson an innovator, but quite another to insist he could have beaten almost any HW in history, especially when you look at the guys he fought.

Quarry didnt KO Shavers clean. I thought the stoppage was premature and the ref should of given Shavers a chance to continue, Quarry got him with a few left hooks but missed the majority of his punches and only because Quarry was swarming Shavers throwing and missing....Earnie had to go down just to get Quarry of his back. Interesting account. Thats the first time I have heard any information on that fight and what happened as I always had wondered about it. In a case like that where a fighter gets a raw deal usually he wants to have a rematch as soon as possible. I would be curious as to why one never took place.

Shavers came out swingin in the beginning and hit quarry at least a couple times but then he just began to cover up and was rocked numerous times by Quarr-Bear
in the post fight interview Shavers had no excuses and said he was hurt from a good punch and that jerry was a great fighter
i dont believe earnie would have ever won that fight
