great work
But box2glory is going to be very different from vivi with ai control boxers in addition to human controlled ones, contracts, coaches, scouts, home advantage, money that mean something, etc. Like Football Manager for boxing.
I am keeping a development blog at box2glory.blogspot.com
deveping boxing web strategy game (text based)
Re: game update
Check out the progress
I have posted the game as it looks so far http://www.box2glory.com
There is no interaction with user yet but you can see the AI doing stuff. ( I have spent a lot of time on AI being that this is my area of interest) Everyday a new turn happens (a week in game time). I am now working on user to AI interaction, then user to user. Then I will be done. For now you can sign up to forum to give me ideas. Any help is welcomed.
Right now there is only 3 countries on one continent and only one division (middleweight). The rating system formula for boxers is boxrec one that I use with John's permission. At continental level like internation competition the UEFA point system is used to count how many slots get allocated to each country. In the future there will be all continents and world level cometition as well.
This turn Chase Bardsley takes on Victor Carmichael for North American champion belt. Should be a duzy!
Process is slow but one day you will all welcome to participate in BETA for this football manager for boxers. [/url]

WEBL is a great game and Bruce Cota is a great feller, he could make coin out of this but chooses not to. I have been playing for 7 years and thats where I met (came across) James Mac and David Payne who also played the game and contributed to the boxing forums - in my opinion probably the best boxing forum on the web between 2000-03.
Downside - It is very very complicated to become good, also there are no penalties for oversized fighters and you often get 7ft 2in -216lbs dancers called 'plopeater' and as a boxing conissuer (snob) it gets on my goat that non boxing fans make a mockery out of our sport. I give all my fighters real names!
and try to give them realistic builds (6ft 2ins, 230lbs heavyweights are rare but in my gym they are not!)
Also, you don't need to know a damn thing about boxing to be any good at the game, a lot of the top managers wouldn't know a right cross from a hot cross bun! In fact, too much knowledge hinders your progress somewhat. Despite this it is very very competitive - The UK ratings from strawweight to heavyweight - there must be at least 350 gyms.
The best manager in the game is a top chap from Warrington who I will only name as 'II' and is always willing to help you with stratergy and whatnot and he also knows his boxing. However a lot of the managers who play not only don't care about boxing but some actively dislike it
Playing purely for the strategy/mathematical aspect!
(and we all know what the word for that kind of person don't we?)

The likes of Couldda, Wilkie and Stick ruined the boxing forum on WeBL. It used to be a great place for boxing debate. Ah well, we can stick to boxrec instead.

Re: deveping boxing web strategy game (text based)
I used to work in the Games industry as a designer, and have written a few designs for boxing games.lesov wrote:Hello, I have been reading forum awhile. I have started to get interested in boxing about 6 years back but never boxed myself. I am a programmer. Currently I decided to make a strategy boxing computer game. It is going to be a strategy game so you have no control over fighter, but you are like a trainer that gives the fighter instructions. Can you boxing gurus help?
So far I have:
Stay on outside (work jab and keep distance good for boxers with reach advantage)
Get inside (better for shorted boxers with good power and great uppercut)
Hold on the inside (for boxers that are not good inside)
Double up on the jab - (what is that for?)
Hook the jab - (what is that for?)
Jump on opponent from openning bell - (like Brewster vs Golata)
Conserve energy
Counterpunch (good against any unpolished boxer, especially the one comming in with wide shots)
Cut of the ring
Go to the body
Go for KO (head hunt)
Since I am no boxer and I never even trained I know you must know tons more. Can you write them here with little explanation as to what the strategy is used for?
Thanks. Its my second attempt to code a game. The first one was way too ambitios and I never finished it.
I could probably help you develop something, but I will warn you in advance that the big problem is 'balancing' the code so that you end up with a realistic simulation.
PM me if you're interested, I've got some ideas you might like.

Making it was fun. I even joined a real boxing gym and have been regularly going there for last three years to learn more about the sport I only watched until 2008. Originally joined to help me to make a game better but learning strategy but then got hooked. It is an awesome workout and tons of fun to be had during sparring and just seeing yourself getting better at things.
The game is Free to play. It is using boxrec formula. It is a strategy game with fights simulated so don’t accept any finger action. You are all welcome to check it out

You guys are the first ones to hear about the game. I don't advertise because this is purely a hobby project for me and I am actually not sure how many active players I can handle at this time.
Re: deveping boxing web strategy game (text based)
I have registered and tried out a simulated fight of boxer vs puncher, looks really good

Re: deveping boxing web strategy game (text based)
Good effort lesov, I'll definitely take a look. Spent an unhealthy amount of time over on WeBL back in the day (UK North region if i recall correctly)....still remember getting borderline emotional (at my desk at work) when I finally won a world title

I am going to give my backing to this game - it looks really really good!
