Mike McCallum and Sean Mannion in Walsall today

Post by bennie »

Today at Bar Sports in Walsall, Mike McCallum and Sean Mannion dropped in for a courtesy lunch hosted by bar owner Scott Murray. The two former opponents (they fought for the vacant WBA light-middleweight title in 1984) are now best of friends. They were over here for the recent charity event in Birmingham to honour fight photographer Tom Casino.

Haven't heard Sean Mannion's name in a long time. It always reminds me of Errol Christie!

Errol boxed so well against Mannion all those years ago. How did Errol never even win a title?

Quite simply due to a chin on a par with Herbie Hide.

I actually have his win over a sliding Mannion on tape and yes he did perform well.

I think I remember Christie explaining the reason why he got decked so often was because his Calf muscles were abnormally tight !?!?

Errol was a long time spar mate of Eubank's. I remember watching them spar 4 rounds in Birmingham prior to the Malinga fight and Christie was sharp and effective in their relatively light session.

Christie, Britain's one time 'Golden boy', was continually let down by his chin (or calfs?!) when it came to the big fights. Same, because as an amateur he looked to have it all.

Christie's fight with Mark Kaylor was probably the pivotal fight in his career. It was an up and down thriller (not only on fight night) but Kaylor prevailed.
