I think Calzaghe is a truly great fighter. Awesome in fact. I backed him to beat Lacy in what I said would be one of the easiest fights of his career.

I also backed him to win against Kessler but not as comfortably.

I just feel that a number of factors, most notably the weight will suit Hopkins.

I cant pick an outright winner but I am edging toward Hopkins using his guile and accuracy to dictate the pace and win a decision.

I hope I am wrong.
I agree with your summing up of the outcome of the fight - I honestly believe to really get Hopkins on the back foot and making mistakes is punch power and speed - calzaghe has one of those and that is speed - but if there is one fighter in the world who can cope with the speed it is Hopkins - he doesn't involve himself in unnecessary sh*t - how many life and death struggles have you seen him involved in?? - that is down to his ringcraft and that is why he is still around today.

I want Calzaghe to win for one of the first times ever - but Hopkins has the skills to make this fight very close indeed - and then it comes down to the judges - that means Hopkins!!!

Joe should hit it when it's on its way in, to double the power.

Well i'll be sure to tell Joe to try and catch B-Hop as he's coming in......

I can't see anything except an incredibly tough night for Calzaghe. Hopkins just has a knack for negating his opponents best weapons. I wouldn't be surprised if Hopkins pulled it off, not at all. There are fighters Calzaghe has had problems with before who are not nearly as good as Hopkins and more importantly not nearly as smart. The difference between Lacy and Kessler and Hopkins is not really ability at this stage, it's brain power in the ring. Hopkins can't fight offensively like he used to be able to, but he can out think most guy's and Calzaghe has never struck me as an overly smart fighter.

If you know someone's going to headbutt you, when he leaps in with his feet off balance, hit the fvcker with an uppercut I say. He won't do it again.

I hope Hopkins doesn't do something stupid, like cut Joe with a headbutt and have it declared a no contest. What a shitty waste of time that would be. Aways thought Joe could've had a warmup fight in America, vs someone like Miranda, just to get used to the new stage.

I actually think Calzaghe will look even better not having to kill himself to make 168. It's possible he'll be fitter, stronger and faster than he was against Kessler. I can't see past a Calzaghe win here, barring an injury/cut. Calzaghe is way too busy to lose to a potshotter/spoiler like Hopkins.

Headbuts from BHOps are too fast and clever to catch on the way in. Calazages hardly a slip and counter merchant anyway.

They are hard to detect. I was half joking anyway until Mr Misery K Galaxy had to chip in with his massive insights. But Joe is a fast fighter and if he sees Hopkins lunge, off balance, feet askew, with a low looking right, and his head down, then it would be funny to see him twat the dirty bugger with a fast left hand counter.

I was not overly impressed with Calzaghe against Kessler. I definate'ly see deteriorations in his game, the most obvious to me being his looping left that he loves to throw which now seems slower and carries less of a pop.

Hopkins has taken this fight as he obviously see's weaknesses he feels he can exploit. This will not be an easy night for Calzaghe and if Hopkins wins i wont be shocked. However, Calzaghe's huge work rate against Hopkins very measured output should see him get the nod, even if Hopkins does manage to look very classy in spurts.

I think he looked drained in his last fight. That, plus the technical errors he makes, made him a sitting duck for Kessler's right over the first siz rounds.

Hopefully Joe is stronger at 175 and fights smart. Lets loose lots of fluid torrents of shots to head and body. He can't go in there like Chad Dawson did last weekend and give the old master punching opportunities.

I never considered Joe an elite fighter until he beat Lacy and I didn't know for sure until he beat Kessler, whether he could deal with different styles at top level. Are there loads of holes in his game that we're going to see exploited bit by bit, on Sat?

Shame he did not get the big fights years ago.

The more I think about it the more I think Hopkins could be stopped late. Would be some achievement if Calzaghe can manage that.

Perversely it seems to happen more often to the guys who struggle with their weight. Looks at Hearns, who used to kill himself at welter coming in light against Leonard.

If you're training like a demon to make weight, and dehydrating yourself, I'm sure it's not that hard to go two pounds over.

I've decided. We'll see Joe hit the canvas (again), on Saturday.

Twice, before the referee waves it off.

So much confidence in this thread, I wish it were infectious, I really do.

I've seen a lot of people defending the idea that Joe really does have punch power, enough to surprise Hopkins, as well as those who consider him to be simply a volume slapper. I believe in that, but Hopkins power hasn't come into question, it's assumed he wont be able to hurt Calzaghe with single shots, not true. He has great timing and underrated power, which we'll see first hand in a few days when Calzaghe walks straight into a punch that'll put every one of our hearts in our throats as Calzaghe hits the deck, rises, makes the same mistake again.

Calzaghe will be screaming at the referee as he waves it off, Calzaghe senior will make a scene, Joe's bint will be balling her eyes out and Hopkins will be golden.

The only part that weight will play, is the heavy load we'll all be carrying around in the aftermath.

Hopkins couldn't knock down Jermain Taylor in 24 rounds and he's going to KO Calzaghe? I seriously can't see it happening.
