London to Cooney: Does America Still Want a White Hope?

I totally agree with you Ray, on the whole i think the public is quite rightly uninterested in the heavyweight mob, but if an articulate/charismatic/handsome white guy suddenly started whacking guys out in the same vein as early Tyson/Morrison etc, i'm sure he'd gain interest.raylawpc wrote:Consciously, no. Subconsciously, yes.
If a handsome, articulate white heavyweight in the mold of - let's say - Peyton Manning burst upon the boxing scene, winning fight after fight in a steady climb to a title shot, I have little doubt that interest in boxing would increase dramatically.
I hate to say it, but I suspect its true.
Whats to be interested about in huge lumbering russians holding each other for 12 slow dull rds ala Wlad/Ibrag?

[quote="Expug"]Im not trying to downplay your question at all.
Unfortunately I dont think the general public gives a shit about boxing anymore or any of that white hope stuff.
Its not the same, as it was in the 80s and before.
I think a lot us forget this. The general public doesn't care about what happens in boxing anymore, and haven't in quite some time. The sport has ben all but dead for a long time.

I do not even regard London as a great writer. I had to read "Call of the Wild" many years ago when I was in high school as an English text and did not think much of it.Goodnight, Irene wrote:"I actually had a great uncle, still alive in my childhood, who was ringside at the Johnson Burns fight. He thought Johnson was the greatest fighter he had ever seen and he was of 100% British Isles descent,
eff you." - Brute
That's Jack London you'd be cheering, not Johnson, to clarify. I would like to re-iterate, though, how wonderful it is you can condemn the majority thinking back in those days, by aligning yourself to the majority thinking in this day. Good for your uncle, too. I'll bet you're as proud as punch to know that there is someone in your family lineage who isn't as feeble-minded as you are.
back at ya, champ

Of course you don't. Why would you? Your teachers indoctrinated you, giving you every opinion you've ever expressed as, "yours." Now, with the benefit of all these decades, you, the all-knowing Brute, can determine for us that the prevailing opinion of today makes you, the modern majority, "thinker," better than yesterday's majority thinkers such as London, all the while hopelessly oblivious to the fact that you only think ill of London because you have been told to.
You are a feeble-minded imbecile

Although I am not an admirer of Jack London the man, I think the "Call of the Wild" is an excellent book, and I enjoyed reading it, and many of London's other works, in my younger days.
Both of my sons read and enjoyed it, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Well it depends how far you take "Race" in Fights...
the Jack Johnson and Jeffery Fight ended in riots and people actually getting Killed... That was just messed up and showed how Dumb People were then with Race Ideas.
But maybe having a laugh now and again "Black v White"... Nothing Serious or "Symbolic", just Simple and for the sake of it.
Sad thing is, nowadays we got some psycho hard-headed Right-Wingers who would relish the thought of a Race-War in the Boxing Ring, and probably Take it outside the ring too, like the Johnson/Jeffery Fight.
Ironically, For such a Fight to occur, there must be No Racism..

This guy fits the bill perfectly ( except he is a little shorter than ideal ). Unfortunately for boxing fans , he will all most certainly be offered a big NFL contract .I guess he supports the theory that American hevyweights are rare because all the potential saviours are in the NFL , NBA etc.overhand_right wrote:I totally agree with you Ray, on the whole i think the public is quite rightly uninterested in the heavyweight mob, but if an articulate/charismatic/handsome white guy suddenly started whacking guys out in the same vein as early Tyson/Morrison etc, i'm sure he'd gain interest.raylawpc wrote:Consciously, no.
