Whilst I see your points and a lot of me is siding with you - I do not want Clinton retiring when I know he could and should have done better. Clinton Woods could have at the very least troubled Antonio Tarver - Prior to the fight, I always had the fight as a very close one - certainly a lot closer than many on here - however - I wa stunned at the manner of Tarvers victory.

I swear blind there must have been something wrong - was it the "belief" aspect that Poxon touched in the corner - was it all the hype b*llocks prior to the fight which Clinton got involved in - was it boxing outside Sheffield/ UK??

Clinton Woods went the bloody hard way of achieving what he did in boxing - a credit to the sport - I simply cannot believe prior to or during the fight he simply thought or subconsciously thought he had enough at the age of 35 - I simply cannot get my head around the performance.
I agree. Whilst I was very dissapointed with Clinton's performance against Tarver, there remains some good match ups for him

I would start with Dean Francis, good domestic fight, should sell. Providing Francis can fully employ his right hand.
Francis has to get past Tony Oakey first, which i don't see him doing , Francis hardly used the right hand in his last fight, against Oakey he will have to, otherwise he will lose. In fact with 2 good hands i'm not sure he has the workrate to top Oakey.

As for Clinton, maybe he can fight the winner of that one, depends what offers come along for Clinton. He will still be highly ranked by the bodies, so may be seen as a route for an up an coming boxer to get into the rankings.

But i still feel Clinton is good enough to win against most of the contenders at light heavy.

Mayweather by rights is linear at 140, he doesn't fight there now so the belt is vacant, Witter and Hatton are 1 and 2 so the winner is linear and Hatton isnt linear unless he beats witter.
a former 130 pounder who happens to beat everyone he's fought over 5 divisions and is the no1 p4p fighter in the world.

what a disgraceful result that was for ricky. how dare anyone call him the 140ib world champion.

u make me laugh u lot.
Doesn't change the fact Ricky lost to a smaller man and only made the fight at 147 to preserve his pretense to be the best 140lber in the world, hes not. Hes purposely avoided Mayweather, Cotto, Witter at 140 who were the best fighters in the division. He hasnt fought against another top 140lber since Tyszu

Can you two go and argue about Hatton and bloody Witter on another thread? It's got no place on here and it's only you two banging on about it. There's a thousand and one threads about it, come on guys.

I think boxrec should have a collection fund - all proceeds go towards enabling hitman hatton, DG and Phenom.Nut to meet up in a pub somewhere to discuss/shout it out! :TU:

Surely next up for Clinton will be an eliminator with Gonzalez?

That may be flippant, but not too far from the truth if he decides to carry on. I hope he's not in a position where he needs to fight on financially, as boxing in particular when your heart's no longer in it can be pretty harsh.

If he does go on, I'm not sure going down to the Francis/Oakey winner would be much of a great risk/reward fight.

A fairly decent comeback with someone like Brancalion, Branco or Barashian. Sounded like he was in a bit of a tear up with Ulrich.

He might get a crack at Erdei. But three or four shots against anyone really would get him another shot against any of the strap holders tbh.

Woods may have put in a dire performance at the weekend, but he has been operating in world class for a long time. Francis never really has and he can't use his right hand properly. Can't see it being remotely close if it happens.
Francis was certainly well on his way to world class in 1997 when he was bashing up guys that world title holders Ottke, Collins, and Calzaghe were struggling against. His level of talent is way above Clinton's but sadly Francis was never able to fulfill this talent due to the injury. Still, he has a world class left hand and should deal with Oakey.

Excrement from Woods from start to finish, what am utterly shambolic performance from a world champ.......
haha....yeah he sounded like a right tw*t after the fight, almost like he was expecting to lose. I did think Tarver would beat him anyway but Woods could have tried a lot harder.

The commentator on Setanta were getting on my nerves, Woods would land one punch and he got all excited about it....I would have given Tarver a harder fight !!!!
I don't think he sounded like a right tw*t at all - he had just lost his world title - he is a proud yorkshireman who is genuinally gutted that he has lost his world title - he is a bloke now seriously considering whether he should retire from the ring - he has a wife and kids to support and his brain must have been totally scattered.

Clinton Woods is one of the most genuine down to earth fighters you can meet - I seriously thought boxing fans would give him a break rather than calling him a "right tw*t"
Oh come off it. He didn't fight like someone determined to keep their title, he plodded after Tarver round after round and hardly broke into a sweat. When they were awaiting the scores he had a big smile on his face like he was glad it was all over. There was no look of major sorrow or disappoinment that he just lost his title more a look of relief.

Then when interviewed was far too quick to say mention retirement and that he had achieved everything he wanted...they are the words from someone who's mind was on retirement already, not of a fighter wanting to keep his title and continue defending it !!!

Yes he may be a nice fella but can you honestly say he tried his very hardest and fought with the determination of someone desperate to win...because I can't.

Not long ago, I watched an interview featuring Oliver McCall - who incidentally came across as surprisingly affable and articulate. Amongst the many things covered therein, he made mention of his clash with Bruno.

According to him, a straight right from Bruno early in the contest completely ruined his momentum and game plan, a statement that surprised me coming from one famed for his tenacity. Could this have also happened to Clinton Woods? I ask because, I was only able to listen to the fight on five live and with the best will in the world, the partisan commentators, aren't always able to provide a comprehensive assessment of what's going on between the ropes.

In raising this question I'm not trying to smear Tarver's performance because by all accounts it was his best since RJ2, but rather seeking an explanation for Wood's apparent lethargy.

B*llocks - I can tell you FACT - Clinton Woods is gutted he has lost his world title.

What did you want Woods to do? - refuse to speak to TV or burst out crying or something!!! - he is a proud man and wanted to come onto TV as he was asked to - I have never seen Clinton Woods refuse an autograph or any media commitment - even when he is right p*ssed off!!!

A couple of years ago Clinton Woods had just had an operation that day on his elbow - he was in bits - but he still came to an Army Boxing Charity Dinner evening signing endless autographs and having photo's taken.

I am stunned he is being ripped into by you - as for his performance in the ring that night - clearly it was not good enough - clearly everyone is dissapointed and whats more I am positive either Clinton will explain things properly when he has had time to think and he has considered his future - and if he boxes on he will put things right!!!

For those who want some domestic clashes for Clinton - why the hell would he take a massive step down.

For me - if Clinton is to carry on, Dennis Hobson has his work cut out as I think Clinton should only be in big fights - like the Erdei one being suggested.

As usual - your post has something that has nothing to do with the fight - so what he signed some gloves? nice - but what has that got to do with the fight?

Clinton may be gutted NOW but at the time he did not do or say anything to suggest he wanted to keep his title.

Its how you feel on the night that counts.

On the night - he did not seem to be there.

As much as i like Woods as a fighter, he did not 'fight' on Saturday night.

eh....your going off topic. I'm talking about the fact that Woods didn't try in that fight. He tried to act the tough man before the fight but then fought like he had no interest in winning. If you think he tried his very hardest then I must have been watching the wrong fight !!

You keep banging on what a nice bloke he is. I'm not saying he isn't, this post is about the fight not his character.

How am I changing my tune?

I said he sounded like a twat, in that he was putting himself down by saying 'im just a skinny lad from Sheffield' blah blah blah. I'm not saying he is a twat, there's a difference.

He didn't fight like a champ and looked glad when it was over. I think he could have tried much harder and I'm sure he thinks that too now its all over.

Plus the Woods discussion on boxrec is ignorant: 'Woods didn't try' - tell you what you get in the ring, take counter after counter while walking forward while tryingto land shots but missing and tell me your not trying.

I think Woods is done at the top level and won't want to come down a level

Best options on the world level are if he can get a fight with Erdei or maybe if the aggressive Garay gets the WBA he can have a tussle with him

Good suggestion if Froch was nearing the end of his Super Middleweight campaign - however Froch could be the Number 1 SM in the country and a lot of people will say the world when Calzaghe retires and I remain convinced the welshman will go sooner than people think.

Well he would start as a big favourite... but, lets not forget - Magee for all his faults ran Froch and Robin Reid close - and should have got the nod vs Tsypko (and IMO vs Oakey).... thats fringe world class form.

Well, we all know about Francis - two handed Francis would have anhilated Woods. One handed Woods would start as a heavy favourite. Francis is adamant that he is a two handed fighter these days, I don't believe it - but if he is.... then Clinton would be in for a hell of a fight.

Oakey - again Woods would start a massive favourite, but Oakey is in the form of his life. Cannot see him do it - but Woods was so poor, he didn't look world class.

Lets not forget... Tarver essentially lost in the opinion of many to the might that is Elvir Muriqi - so not good form, and Clinton practically lost every second of every round to Tarver.

Good suggestion if Froch was nearing the end of his Super Middleweight campaign - however Froch could be the Number 1 SM in the country and a lot of people will say the world when Calzaghe retires and I remain convinced the welshman will go sooner than people think.
Isn't this his last year anyway? So you think he will retire after the fight on Sunday?
