Al Evans & Kimmuel Odom

Post by Alister »

How good amateur boxers were Al Evans and Kimmuel Odom? I know they both have vistories over Mike Tyson, by KO and DQ respectively, but what where the circumstances surrounding those fights?
Can anyone tell me anything about their amateurcareers, and maybe offer some thoughts as to why they were comlete busts as pros?
Thanks!

I have Tyson losing to Onum in November 1983 by DQ2 at the USA Amateur Championship, Colorado Springs. I think Tyson stormed out of the ring with fustrations at Odums constant holding.

I also have Tyson losing to Al Even on 12/12/1982 by RSC3 at the USA Amatuer Championships Indianapolis.

I had the pleasure and of meeting Al "Chico" Evans when he represented the US in a dual meet against Ireland... in 1983 that took place in Concord Ca.
ACE won his fight with The Irishman by a crushing Knockout and afterwards met with the fans and signed autographs.and chatted .he was a very cool guy but he looked like he was already in his thirties... I remember he was listed as 28 but he looked older than that..

That may be why Evens former Chicago Golden Gloves champ did well against 16 year old Tyson and also why his subsequent pro career went nowhere...

He was about 31 when he turned Pro, did he have a long Amatuer career? I seem to recall reading he did a long term in jail when he was young.

I'm not sure about this either..but rather than being in prison but I think Al Chico Evans May have been one of those guys who boxed for the military...That would also expalin his late entry into the pros ...

In Tyson's autobiography he says how he lost by TKO to Al Evans. He was dominating until he walked into a big shot in the final round (round 3) and went down.He got up and tried to go at the guy but was still dazed and got dropped again, he then got up and went back out aggressive but slipped over and the ref counted it as a knockdown so with the 3 knockdown rule he was TKO'd.

In the amateurs I met MT [NEGG] and the first words between us..the conversation was about him, & his Career...I jetted in asking 'what' about Al Evans. He played it off as if it were a fluke. [The asking caused MT have affection towards me. That day and the next he is acting CUTE towards me. & he is nice PERSON!]
