Hopkins - Calzaghe fight your view as it happens

I thought Hopkins nicked it on first viewing. Better shots throughout and far more memorable. I think it he landed what you would call the more professional shots. A lot of Joe's work seemed amateurish.

That touchdown may not have hurt him greatly but it left him in two minds for at least 3-4 rounds and he was looking poor.

I thought it was a good fight. Wouldn't cry with a point or two either way. That 3rd card was a disgrace, someone obviously misread the fight when you consider the other two cards, that more than anything else galls me in boxing. Two men do a job and the 3rd makes a right arse of it.

Reminded me of Toney-Peter I. Do you like the guy hitting the other guy on the chin? Or the guy throwing more shots but not often landing the showier blows?

Credit to Hopkins, he may be a boring bastard but he said he would negate the speed and land on Calzaghe, and he did just that.

Anyone think Joe-Jones might be more competitive now, provided Jones' chin holds up? I can see Jones landing more often than Hopkins. Still, I would rather Pavlik-Calzaghe but no way does Joe get to 168 anymore.

Agree with this assessment. Hopkins also did a lot of good work in the clinches, he was rattling joe with right uppercuts and hooks on the inside.

I think Calzaghe v Jones Jr is now a 50/50 fight. If Bernard can floor him with an accurate punch, Jones's speed and power might stop him.

Jones skills aren't as suttle as Hopkins so they have deteriated much faster, Jones hasn't got the technical ability and boxing brain of Hopkins either.

The thing Jones will get is openings to throw counter punches but he just gets lazy these days and doesnt throw in combinations much. In their prime it isnt even a contest but now I edge towards Calazage 8-4 unless RJJ can set up a career renaisance. Hopkins is excellent against southpaws, RJJ has proven not to be so much. Although the left hook and right hand coutners will certainly land from Roy

No you win rounds by landing the better cleaner more effective punches. BHOPs smashed Joe with masterful clean counters bang on the button and Joe hit air and occasionally BHOPs shoulders and arms with slaps. BHOPs schooled the Welshman

Calzaghe landed the cleaner punches In volume, Hopkins landed very little In single shots and at times would miss and hold then lean with the head. He was clearly beaten.

All Hopkins did was constantly stay on the back foot moving backwards, hold, fake low blows, head butt and throw a few single shots a round.

The 116-111 was right.

If Hopkins actually fought clean and didn't fight that way he would of been battered, the 2001 was more aggressive so due to styles he would of lost worse If he was younger.

If you can't fight at a decent enough pace then theres no point fighting at all, he could barely last a couple of seconds without holding.

No Calazage didnt land clean punches at all and you say he did because we all know you have wet dream of the Calazage posters on your wall Max. Your the most blatant nutthugger on this forum

Boxing about landing clean effective punches, Joe didnt do that last night. If you judge boxing by who is moving backwards and who is holding, faking low blows then Joe won. But boxing isnt judged in that way.

As to say Hopkins would have been battered? Who hurt who the most? Who was hurt in the fight? The only fighter hurt was Calazage, the only fighter down was Joe, the only fighter looking roughed up was Joe.

At best Calzaghe landed a handful of clean punches.

Hopkins won the fight, for christ sake.

He spun off the ropes and put Joe back on the rpes a few times. Not once did Woodhall or Rawling mention it. Woodhalls bias was very dissapointing.

Hopkins landed the more telling blows, the heavier blows, uppercuts inside, jabs, right hands, wheras Joe caught Hopkins arms and shouldders and elbows in the main. Watched the fight again this afternoon, Joe caught lots of air with his shots.

The fight was close, and may have been hard for the less experienced observer to score, but Joe did not land enough telling blows to take a man's title.

When the decisions were announced you could tell how shocked Joe was. 116-111 after a 10-8 first round really is a liberty and one of the worst score cards I have seen.

You cant blame Joe for the decision and though I was rooting for him, I have mixed feelings about it now.

Joe should give him a rematch, in America.

I have finally got time to post my inside thoughts on the fight. I can totally understand people giving it to Calzaghe on aggression and workrate but you could count the amount of flush shots that Calzaghe landed on one hand and still have a few digits left. Hopkins fought the perfect fight and in my opinion did just enough to win, even though I seem to be in the minority. He hurt Calzaghe two or three times and landed a lot of the better shots, even though Compubox had Calzaghe outlanding him by over a hundred punches. In conclusion I don't have a problem with the cards apart from Chuck Giampa's - no way did Hopkins only win two or three rounds, he actually won the first four rounds and the odd one in the middle and near the end for me. It was just a classic case of what people like in fights. I like clean shots and tight defences, whereas some people like aggression.

Anyhow, did anyone see Audley Harrison on the undercard? And did anyone know why the referee stopped it after Jason Barnett beat the count? Really strange was that one. And Barry McGuigan ripped into him a treat last night as well.

We all knew Calzaghe was open the right hand (see Reid, Eubank, Woodhall, Salem, Mitchell etc) but his chin really was up in space for some of those. Calzaghe i do believe has always been a little bit open and certainly his swings were a little wild and wide but in the past he has got away with it due to being able to overwhelm the opposition.

Hopkins landed the quality while Joe threw the quantity but frig it, he won and fair play to him. Pretty sure it was a swansong fight, one more big one and then out methinks as he is very slowly on the decline. Which of course is only natural.

On a sidenote, surprised at the poor quality of the undercard considering it was golden boy, have they gone for the Warren initiative of...well it's a top class main event so stuff the rest?! Danny Garcia and Danny Jacobs were tucked away on it and both will be something special in a few years time.

Wel done Joe, legacy secured. I mean this in the most respectful way but is Calzaghe maybe (stylewise) a fast, well conditioned brawler? Just a thought Cheers

Probably to do with the TV schedule.... I would imagine it was one of the non HBO PPV shows - which show the main event, and the replay of last week big event. As wih Corrales vs Freitas... so then there would be little point of an undercard.

Just got back from Vegas. 10,000 JC fans dominated in the Thomas & Mack Center. The atmoshpere was incredible.

Most had Joe winning by a couple of rounds as did I. Hopkins obviously started will but Joe got into it by mid fight. Hopkins is horrible to watch, too defensive and Joe deserved the win.

Got to hang out with Juan Laporte after the fight. Spent a few horus with him and met Manny Steward, Stallone, Joe and Enzo. Top night.

Juan Laporte is a top notch bloke. Very proud of the fact he was never floored in over 50 fights. Said Pedroza gave him his hardest fight and was very dirty. Vinny Paz was there too, no love lost between Laporte and Paz. Laporte reckons Paz shit out of a fight against him and fought Camacho instead.

Manny Steward was a good guy. We got to talking about Cintron and Vlad. Him and Enzo had a big hug for each other and are clearly friendly.

All in all a top weekend which will be nigh on impossible to top.

Great stuff for Joe, he deserves it. He made the fight and glad he won.

Just look at Ray Leonards face in the crowd during the clip! He cannot believe what he is seeing! I really think frustration set in a little bit with Calzaghe during the fight.

For what it's worth, I think B-Hop won the fight. Hopkins landed the more telling punches, the crisper shots. Granted, Calzaghe may have thrown & landed more punches, but he did not have Hopkins in trouble or hurt him.

As mentioned by KO Artist, Hopkins spun Joe off the ropes & caught him numerous times in doing so. Richie Woodhall licks Calzaghe's backside. The biased views were a big disappointment!

Even Enzo Calzaghe thought JC was losing the fight. Throughout the fight, there is mayhem in Calzaghe's corner, quite a contrast to that of Hopkins & Freddy Roach.

Enzo keeps swearing, ranting & raving, clearly the behaviour of somoone who thinks his guy is losing, thinks there not doing enough, etc. I clearly remember Enzo telling Joe "your fighting his fight".

It was a close fightm but Hopkins was the more effective for me. I was rooting for Calzaghe, but that way one judge scored the fight so wide for Calzaghe, is an absolute liberty to do that to a fine champion like Bernard.
