Connecticut Classic - USA Boxing event to be televised
On May 9th, 2008 USA Boxing is hosting the Connecticut Classic at Bridgeport, Conn. It is going to be televised by NBC.
One of the scheduled bouts is going to be Shawn Porter v. Luis Arias. It is the bout that was supposed to happen in Colorado Springs this year, but didn't due to a medical walkover. This should be a very exciting bout and I plan on watching it.

No, he is fulfilling his committment as the Olympic Team Alternate and doing everything in his power to help the USA win MEDALS in Beijing. There are others in Colo Springs that are doing the same thing.boxmel wrote:Yeah - they could be mixing. It's an all AIBA officials event, as all duals are. Thought Shawn turned pro???
Please don't say that there is no such thing, because there is. They are typically the Olympic Trials Runner-ups and they could go to an Olympic Qualifier in place of the Trials Champion and be on the Olympic Team. Once the last qualifier is done at the end of this month, then there is no chance for the Alternate to replace the Trials Champion. I still don't like that rule and for my reasoning all I have to say is "JOE FRAZIER".
And where do you see the above in writing? It hasn't happened in the 21 years I've been around. Please don't say that there is no such thing, because there is. There are a lot of things that aren't in writing. Frazier was '64 - 44 years ago. Do you really think we wouldn't try to send an alternate boxer to the last Olympic qualifier if the Trials Champion was unable to go? Don't you think the Alternate who is in camp would go?boxmel wrote:And where do you see the above in writing? Yes, we wouldn't, and no. There are no "alternates." There are only "training partners." Mickey Bey was not able to compete in the 2004 Tijuana qualifier and we didn't send the "alternate." We gave Bey the chance at the last Americas qualifier and he didn't make it. Maybe we'll have to wait and see if, and when, a Trials champion is physically unable to compete in any of the qualifiers and see how that situation is handled.Do you really think we wouldn't try to send an alternate boxer to the last Olympic qualifier if the Trials Champion was unable to go? Don't you think the Alternate who is in camp would go?
Re: Connecticut Classic - USA Boxing event to be televised
I can't wait to see Porter/Arias! I hope it is a televised bout. Does anyone know which/how many bouts will actually be televised? I had the opportunity to see that Porter kid and he is a beast!Dennis wrote:On May 9th, 2008 USA Boxing is hosting the Connecticut Classic at Bridgeport, Conn. It is going to be televised by NBC.

Porter v Arias should be a great bout. Porter is now one of the established amateurs at 20 years old, while Arias is one of the young guns trying to make a name for himself as he is only 17. They both are very skilled and have a lot of experience. Porter has more elite level and international experience, but Arias was the World Cadet Championships silver medalist and 2008 US Champion.
I really hope this one is televised so I can watch it. I will be working at the National Golden Gloves tournament and will record it if it is televised.

Re: Connecticut Classic - USA Boxing event to be televised
I had the good fortune to see them box last summer. They both got a standing ovation from a packed house. Great match up. No, I won't reveal the winner:~) that could spoil the fun in Connecticut.

I can't speak to that, since I am pretty new to this.
But from your reference, I can see from his USA boxing profile that he beat Estrada at least twice in tournaments and that he appears to have more standing s points than any boxer in any weight class (but, in fairness, the Olympian's points are not shown).
I do know to that both he and Arias put on one whale of a show the last time they met.
