Anyone out there recall this venture?
I remember reading a couple of articles about it back in the the mid '70s when I first became a boxing fan, but other than those long faded stories from magazines past & the occasional brief mention in the agate type of a '70s era fighter's record here, I haven't ever seen an in depth piece on the WBL or any other attempts at a pro boxing league with teams.
Obviously, it's a concept that is just never going to catch on as evidenced by the ongoing struggles with a similar concept in MMA currently in the IFL. When it comes to professional fighting, people simply want to get behind each individual fighter on their own merits rather than cheering for a group of fighters as a single entity.
Nevertheless, I'd love to know how long the pro team concept in boxing lasted, where the teams were located & who some of the better known "players" involved were. Anyone?
