Yeah, it looks inevitable doesn't it.
Joe has a super middleweight legacy but he won't have one at light heavy based on fights with Jones and Hopkins.
I just hope he has some more fights after Jones. Jones will be a sitting duck! His legs are gone yet his hands are still fast. So he has to fight aggressively. This will gie Calzaghe a pretty clear chance to win.
Wouldn't mind seeing Calzaghe defend his light heavyweight title vs...Chris Byrd (moved down to light heavy), Glen Johnson (knocked the shit out of Jones, let's not forget), or Edison Miranda (if he beats Abraham) and the Tarver-Dawson winner.
I suppose now that Calzaghe owns the Ring Light Heavy crown and nothing else at the weight, that the Uk will start accepting Ring Mag's belt as a world title. Newspapers and media often ignore this over here (but not totally).

Maybe Joe should come in at 172 as Glen Johnson does. Johnson seemed to be a bit drained at super middle, but as a light heavy he always comes in light at about 172.DG. wrote:Joe has to make the fight as no more than 170!
Joe does not lift weights so I d not think he is that strong at Lt Heavy.
Jones is not as clever as Hopking but he will be dangerous for the 1st few rounds, JC UD12 or late stoppage!
Joe doesn't look fast at the higher weight but Hopkins does have that uncanny ability to slow time down.
It'll be another ugly fight, this will be, IMO.
Bet afterwards, Joe does something like fight Tito Trinidad in America. However, Pavlik can't seem to find a worthy 160-lb challenger so why not make a couple of defenses then gun for Calzaghe. Get Joe to come down to super middle where he may have difficulty coming down!

Can't see it happening at the Millenium Stadium that day.scrap iron wrote:..........according to BBC radio this morning the fight has been verbally agreed and is going to happen at the Millennium Stadium.
Wales have got a rugby international against Canada on the 15th. In fact the stadium has rugby internationals every weekend in November.

The reason I say 170 is because it is harder for Jones to make 170 than it is Calzaghe ( JC admits he can still make 168lbs).Autobarn wrote:Maybe Joe should come in at 172 as Glen Johnson does. In facxt - I remember Jomnes saying he would fight at 168 if he had to.
JC holds the Ring Belt at 175 and 168 so why not just risk the Ring Belt at SM?
168 - 170 suits JC - 172 would suit RJJ!
I see the Jones fight being an even riskier fight.
Hopkins only really brought the tricks of a wily old sneak-thief of a fighter :x
Jones - whilst obviously being passed his best - still has the know how and probably the punch to give calzaghe real problems .. I don`t see it being a stinker like the Hopkins fight always was going to be .. I don`t really make Calzaghe that big a favourite in this - especially up at lt-heavy

I'm distinctly underwhelmed by the prospect of this fight.
This fight should have happened in 2000 or so.
I just don't think that Jones is up to it these days; he's too gun-shy IMO.
He was all right against Tito, but Tito was an ageing, fat, ring rusty weltwerweight that represented little or no threat.
Calzaghe on the other hand would be a different proposition entirely.

Interesting 1, Calazage doesnt really have the threat of power to make Jones go into a shell as he can do. He also isn't great at boxing at range. He is also very open to counter punchers and RJJ is still an excellent counterpuncher
However RJJs workrate is now pitiful and Calazages workrate is excellent, it may completely exhaust and shut RJJ down trying to compete. RJJ has a tendency even against Trinidad and that other average fighter he faced to go to the ropes, lie on them and roll with the shots. I dont know if this is a good idea against Calazage
A few things are for sure, Calazage will be caught time and again by counters and Calazage will bring the fight having a far higher workrate unless RJJ makes him gunshy.
We will probably be looking at another close UD where we will argue over the result based on if we prefer quality or quantity
RJJ will neeed to turn the clocks back and change his style to pull off a win, I don't know, I'd like to see him pull off 1 last hurrah.

They indeed have, and in South Wales, Rugby rules.the patriot wrote:Can't see it happening at the Millenium Stadium that day.scrap iron wrote:..........according to BBC radio this morning the fight has been verbally agreed and is going to happen at the Millennium Stadium.

Excel or the O2 if it going to be held in November, and if the stars line up the way FW wants, then on the undercard Enzo to try and regain a belt of some kind to carry on the Welsh torch, and Khan to try and grab his world title.
Make business sense and the best looking card ever to grace british shores. Or am I getting too far ahead of myself??

Again, like Hopkins, Jones won't be able to keep the pace Calzaghe sets up and will have his success pot shotting but will have to use his savvy to hold Joe off him in the later rounds. And Joe will be able to demonstrate his strengths more against Jones.
It would have been a better fight years ago but a peak Jones beats Joe IMO. The Jones who beat Clinton Woods was good enough to beat a peak Calzaghe IMO. But now his reflexes and legs are nowhere near as good, it's Joe's fitness and pressure that will bring him through. And it won't bother Joe to fight at 170lb. Plus, if it's at Cardiff he'll be be at home where any fighter performs best.

I think Joe will want the extra poundage, around 173.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Other people have it spot on, if this fight is at <=170 Joe wins. If it's >= 175 RJJ wins.
In between...who knows.
Jones still has fast hands but his legs are withered and he doesn't like fighting at a pace. Joe will definitely figure Jones out.
I just hope that after walking through Jones in another messy fight, he will get a fight with Pavlik.

Gotta remember that was Joe's first fight at the weight and in Vegas. Different country, atmosphere, food, conditions, the whole kaboodle.
Back in Wales he'll just be back to Ordinary Joesville which he loves. Home comforts will automatically up his performance level, not three or four pounds.
I agree, getting Jones to shed extra pounds only helps but don't think the fight is won or lost on the basis of a five-pound difference.
Joe will also benefit from having boxed with a few pounds extra. I must make it easier just not having to starve yourself that bit extra before you go 12 rounds.
