It would have been a better fight years ago but a peak Jones beats Joe IMO. The Jones who beat Clinton Woods was good enough to beat a peak Calzaghe IMO. But now his reflexes and legs are nowhere near as good, it's Joe's fitness and pressure that will bring him through. And it won't bother Joe to fight at 170lb. Plus, if it's at Cardiff he'll be be at home where any fighter performs best.
Jones has the punch to be dangerous over the first half.

I recall RJJ recently saying 'the only way to beat JC is by knocking him out', so I'd expect RJJ to be looking for the BIG power shots early on, if he doesn't stop him by the halfway mark (I can't see him KO'ing JC) then I'd expect JC to win a decision

The great Roy leaving home and coming to Wales?? How the mighty have fallen.
Can't fail to be a better fight than Hopkins I hope.

Big question is, is the Jones chin even more fragile than Joe's hands?

he's the biggest name out there.

i'm not as against this match as some are.

jones is obviously not the force he once was.

but he's proved in the last 3 that he has a bit left.

he's still got the skills to pay the bills. :box:
you have got to be kidding me? If you guys over the pound really truly believe that RJJ is the biggest name out there, after he was BRUTALLY KO'd twice and fought a bunch of table scraps just to end his career with some victories, then I feel sorry for the state of Euro fighters.

Kelly Pavlik who has called out Calzaghe, and whom was mentioned after the hopkins fight, was completely avoided by Joe in a rather suspect manner and he directly called out RJJ, whom if we all trained hard enough we could beat.

what a disgrace

Get real, Joe has already called out Pavlik - but Bob Arum has already mapped out the rest of 08 for his man - first Lockett and then some bum at the end of Sep, then aiming for a fight with Abraham.
I'd love to see the Pavlik fight as well, but Arum would want a kings ransom no doubt.

It's not a fight you'd think FW or Joe would avoid either, he's got the prefect walk in style that Calzaghe loves.

You gotta remeber as well Pavlik is quite happy at 160. Joe just fought at 175lb. Pavlik I'm sure is quite happy at Middleweight for the time being. There are plenty of good fights open to him and Arum has seemingly set out a schedule for the forseeable future.
RJJ is easily the biggest name out there. The average person knows RJJ becuase of his acheivements in the 90s. You try asking the man on the street who Chad Dawson or Kelly Pavlik are. Pavlik Taylor 2 bombed in the US as well.

Pavlik isn't too happy at 160 because there is no big fight for him, save maybe Abraham.

What if Calzaghe were to drop down to 168? Risk of being drained. etc. Great opportunity for Pavlik to pick up a very big scalp.

There is a quite small window for this bout. If Abraham loses to Miranda, there is NOBODY WHATSOEVER for Pavlik at 160. He struggles to make 160 bad and he would move up. Plus, he says he wants to fight at all weights from middle to heavy, so let's see if he'll go up 8 or 15 lbs.

Pavlik is supposed to be fighting Lockett then Rubio...

If Jones could not knock out Trinidad (who was woeful, past it, and overweight) then he has no hope against JC. It will be a much better fight than Saturday's, with Joe winning, possibly by late TKO or by 4 rounds or so on points.

Jones is certainly not the best fight out there in terms of quality of opponent. However, to the non-hard core boxing fans and the men who need the millenium stadium filled up, he is. It's as simple of that.

Personally, though, I think Calzaghe would look best, and appear most impressive against Pavlik.

Making the Jones fight provisionally makes a great deal of sense.

Pavlik could, after all, walk on to a haymaker in the interim and the bout be a non-starter.

It isn't beyond the realms of possibility given his style.

Its an event, payday contest. But I understand it, Joe could probaly earn £2million.

That buys a lot of lollipops in Wales.

Pavlik needs these fights just to stay busy and to keep visible. End of the year, if he bypasses Abraham, it can be Pavlik-Calzaghe.

I think Joe will hang around for this fight. He could do with one like this. Pavlik will be worth a lot of $$ soon enough and it will be tempting.

And they could fight somewhere like NYC, draw a nice crowd, have the fight on PPV if built properly. With Joe having just won in the States, this increases the chance.

Just to make clear, there isn't anything official, anything signed re Calzaghe-RJJ. Warren said nothing will be decided until Joe is back off holiday. Is this to keep Jones excited and get him to concede terms? Jones is a nightmare negotiator. He pulled out of his fight with Hanshaw until it was agreed that Jones' company would promote...Most importantly, is Warren keeping all the rest (Pavlik, Taylor, Miranda) in suspense and waiting for the other offers to come flooding in.

PS heard Don King wants to make Hopkins-Tito II. At least that may rule those 2 out, LOL.

i don't see a jones match being ugly.

i see that one being fairly clean action.

i think calzaghe will win on workrate.

jones doing too much covering up on the ropes most likely.
I don't actually see that one going the distance - RJJ has fast combinations in his favour, and has the punch of the two but a really average chin, whilst Joe has the skills but can be drawn into a bloodbath. I'd tentatively go for Joe in about seven.

Roy would struggle with the pace. And Roy lacks the shameless playacting which Hopkins used to buy up to 5 mins rest while knackered! Bad fight for Roy.

I think Joe made 2.5m against Kessler, he would want more for Jones.

I read he made $4M against Hugkins.

Jones didn't have it in him to stop a puffed up, inactive, past it Felix Trinidad. He hasn't the pop or ability to fight at the kind of pace that will beat Calzaghe.
