I remember Archie Moore fighting Willie Pastrano at the Sports Arena in LA. to a draw. Angelo Dundee said that Pastrano was the first fighter he trained. Said Willie first came to the gym to lose weight. Too many meatball sandwiches. Pastrano was a nice kid,but a boring fighter. Saw his last fight with Jose Torres on TV. Willie looked like he trained on meatball sandwiches.

Something tells me ,after fighting ,Willie wanted to be a singer. Anything you can tell me about Pastrano? How come Italians all think they can sing?I went to Italy and visited where my ancestors came from. Naples. Geez,everybody is singing.Cab drivers,waiters,desk clerks,pick pockets. They even got me singing. One cab driver told me he had Pavoratti in his cab. Said that Pavoratti was going to sing Neopolitan songs at a concert,but wasn't quite sure about a certain phrasing to a particular song. The cab driver told me that he told Pavoratti how to sing the passage to the song. Pavoratti said the cab driver was right. I guess the cab driver got free tickets to the concert.

Those programs you have are a trip down memory lane. A little before my time,but to see all those fight cards at all those arenas,big and small,is something we'll never see again. Fights on TV three nights a week. Nothing blacked out. Announcers like Jack Drees,Russ Hodges,and Don Dunphy. My favorite was Ted Husing. I replay the last LaMotta/Robinson fight sometimes just to hear his voice. "Round number 13. The hard luck round. I don't have to tell you who the boys are."

You're right Frank. The young fans today missed the Golden Era of boxing in the 50's and 60's. Fighters traveled to fight in different cities in diffrent arenas. They fought eight times a year. If the first fight was a close one,there'd be a rematch in three months. Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer and Gillette Blue Blades were synonomous with the fights.. Fighters wore black boxing shoes, except for maybe the Cubans who wore white shoes,but that was OK because that was their style. White trunks with black stripes or black trunks with white stripes. Just to see how the fighters got their instructions from the referee was satisfying. Just another day at work. "Shake hands and come out boxing. May the better man win."

The sport had a dignity and class that seldom surfaces today.

That's the way I feel to. Here's a good one. One time my car broke down in Logan Heights ,right in the heart of the ghetto. I call my father to come over and give me a ride home. Well he gets there and parks his car across the street. My father is pushing 80 years of age and doesn't walk or see that well anymore. He gets out of the car and starts hobbling across the street not even checking for cars. Just like that a car load of gangsters all wearing blue in this lowrider pull right up near my father. I thought they were going to run him over. I'm yelling at my father,but he's lost half his hearing as well. The driver of the car leans on the horn. My father looks at them as he hobbles by and gives them the "finger" He then yells at them to "Go f--k your mothers." I'm tellin' myself this is where me and the old man die.

What do you think these thugs do? They all bust out laughin'!!

Like I said,lookin' scary is impressive enough sometimes.

I've heard 'Cabron' lately. Want to hear a dumb one? I call this little senorita I met a little while back on my house phone. (My wife went shopping). She doesn't answer her cell phone. Her cell phone says "leave a meesage at the tone". Well I'm a real rocket scientist. I'm not leavin' no message. But I never thought that my phone number would show up on her "missed calls" list. She must have known it was me because it's a U.S. number.

About a half hour later the phone rings and my wife picks it up.(She's back from shopping). She comes in the bedroom. I'm busy communicatin' with my pals on the Forum.
"Quien es Beatriz?" and she hands me the phone.
I grab the phone like nothin' and say in Spanish.
"I told you girls not to go to the front office and look up my phone number. Now I'm going to have to change my number again. Damn it!" (You think Beatriz would have hung up when she heard my wife's voice?)
I click the phone off and act very angry.
"I told those girls not to do that. Now they're going to get in trouble!"
I don't know if my wife bought that,but like I said before, why tell the truth? That only makes things worse.
BTW if you guys want to get a hold of me,I'll be staying at the YMCA. They said their computers have the Internet.
