Worst performance by a referee
The one that always comes to mind for me was Mickey Vann in the Lewis-Bruno fight.
It bis the only fight I have ever vseen, where a ref stopped the action to warn a fighter for a foul, let the fight continue, and then stopped the fight and awarded the fight to the fighter who not only was just warned, but who commmited the exact same foul again.

Hate to criticise the great man but Joe Louis for Frazier - Quarry II was embarrasing, he tried to call the fighters together for pre fight instructions before they'd even been introduced then proceeded to allow Quarry to be beaten up until Frazier and Quarry between them almost decided to stop the fight.
Pretty sad all round.
Pretty sad all round.

Great call; he ruined that fight big time.generic screen name wrote:Jersey Joe Walcott in Ali/Liston 2. WTF was he doing????!?!? He looked like such a dolt in the end of the fight!
He's even ruined Liston's legacy, as so many have said that Liston took a dive.
Liston was on his feet fighting when the fight was stopped!

I said in a thread ages ago that it was not Liston who was taking a dive, but the crappy refereeing of Walcott. Liston had his wits together, had his hands up ready to fight. Than Joe called it off for some odd reason. I still think Ali wins the fight, but it was one of the most miscontrued fights in boxing history. Liston did not quit that fight.Syntax Error wrote:Great call; he ruined that fight big time.generic screen name wrote:Jersey Joe Walcott in Ali/Liston 2. WTF was he doing????!?!? Why did the NYSAC appoint Louis to be the referee in the first place?
To sell tickets?

Good point.
I only say this as I just re-watched the fight earlier today. The Mexican ref in McCall-Lewis 1. I thought that for a champ Lewis had a shitty deal.
Just had a squiz at the rematch of Ali-Liston, the whole officiating seemed all over the place. As much as I like Walcott maybe as a ref he was not the best pick for such a big fight.

Please do, jaclem.Jaclem wrote:....zack clayton....charles-walcott 4.....for reasons i've written so many times here i don't think i should do it again...
What did Clayton do in that fight?
He was a disaster and obviously not impartial in the Ortiz-Teo Cruz fight and the Tiger-Carter fight (among others).
