Alfonso is pretty good. Pan-Am Champion and won the first Qualifier. Took bronze at the 2004 Junior World Championships, where he was stopped in the Semi's by eventual winner, Evgeny Romanov of Russia.a87star wrote:Does anyone know how good Acosta and Alfonso are?
Also, did you ever get my PM locoelbox?
Acosta is good as well. Pan-Am Champion, won the first qualifer and won gold at the 2002 World Junior Championship at 75 kg. People have put him as a favorite to win gold in Beijing.
At the 1st quailfier in Trinidad, both Acosata and Alfonso looked OK, nothing special. Both of them had their best bouts against the American boxers in the finals. In Acosta's 1st bout against the Barbados boxer Anderson, it was close 10-6. Anderson gave him all he could handel. Alfonso's 2nd bout ended 7-3 against the Mexican boxer Andres Ruiz who lives in California.
I don't see either one of them winning gold in Beijing.

Full results are now up, too many to write down so look for yourself at http://www.olimpiadacubana.cu/showpage/ ... aspx?d=BOX
These are the finalists so far:
51 kg Andry Laffita (CUB)-Juan Carlos Payano (DOM)
Payano is up 3-1 in their meetings and already beat Laffita in Cuba before but I think home advantage swings it in favor of the cuban this time.
57 kg Ivan Oñate (CUB)-Yasnier Toledo (CUB)
Interestingly cuban olympian Idel Torriente lost to kazakh Maxat Ospanov who in turn lost to cuban junior star Toledo.
64 kg Rosniel Iglesias (CUB)-Richard Poll (CUB)
Rematch of the Cuban Nationals final where Iglesias won 12-9.
75 kg Emilio Correa (CUB)-Carlos Gongora (ECU)
Correa has beaten Gongora twice this year. 16-3 at the Independence Cup and 11-0 in the Olympic qualifier.
91 kg Yasmani Consuegra (CUB)-Osmay Acosta (CUB)
Acosta of course big favorite.

It is interesting that Cuba has their Olympians continue to compete in national tournaments while the US boxers usually only compete in international competitions once they make the US team. Over the last 8 months many of the US Olympic Team members have competed less than they normally would during that period of time.

You are right. Sorry I didn't doublecheck. Ospanov went to the World Championships where he lost to Raynell Williams thus didn't qualify. Then veteran Galib Jafarov qualified instead.emile wrote:Ospanov has not qualified for the upcoming Olympics, I don't think, even though it looks the Spanish language press is reporting that.

It's strange they have had some competitions where their qualified boxers haven't boxed. You're right, it's a long time since the World Championships and it would've not been harmful for them to fight in the US Nationals.Dennis wrote:It is interesting that Cuba has their Olympians continue to compete in national tournaments while the US boxers usually only compete in international competitions once they make the US team. The Cuban Olympics is an international tournament though but of course there are more cubans than foreign boxers participating.

The best cuban is 2005 World Champion at 60 kg Yordenis Ugas but he will have two great opponents in Frankie Gavin and Alexey Tischenko. Also Emilio Correa at 75 kg has been doing well lately but russian Matvey Korobov is outstanding in his weight class.
64 kg Rosniel Iglesias and 69 kg Carlos Banteuax could surprise at the Olympics.
