Boxing Overkill??

Post by stujones »

This is related to the ITV thread, but going slightly of the topic. One of the posters made the point that ITV would have to make a big investment to have boxing on every week. I remember in the glory days of ITV Boxing (as Nigel Benn would put it) boxing would really be on twice a month and they would generally feature either proper world titles (WBO being the least prostigious shown) or other geniune big fights (like a British, Commonwealth or European fight starring a big name - like a Herbie Hide or a Barry McGuigan).

Now, whilst us boxing fans appreciate "Saturday fight night" and all the stuff Sky has done, do you think part of the reason why the popularity of boxing has gone down is due to the fact that there is to much shown. More often than not, we get fights are not exciting headlining bills for spurious titles (note - Julius Francis vs Matt Skelton, whilst a good match on paper - turned into a joke).

Whilst most of us a glad that boxing is on so often now, however most also long for the glory days - this is when the shows were quality, ITV had time to probably advertise and hype the show (because there was more than a week between the "Big Fight" shows) also every fight shown wasn't just a good fight, but was meaningful on a grand scheme of things - because they were for "proper boxing".

So I ask, is too much boxing a bad thing for its popularity?

Good point!

You gotta understand that Sky sports exec's feel SHAFTED by not getting the future GOLDEN BOYS OF BRITISH BOXING in AUDLEY, FROCH and HAYE!

Audley is already a house hold name, Haye is on his way to being one and FROCH will be one by the end of the year!

All 3 have great personalities and very marketable!

Sky only has 1 guy like this and its obviously HATTON, the rest no matter how good they are will never make Commercial sense in terms of sponsorship and advertising.

I'm not sure I agree, I believe Sky have (during its time) had some guys who would have been household names had they had the terrestial start. I'm sure the public would have really warmed to the marketable style of Spencer Oliver and the "home boy tryer" - without meaning to sound at all disrespectful of Paul Ingle. In many ways, Paul reminded me of Barry McGuigan.

Lets not forget, Eamomn Loughran is probably more well known - why because ITV normally had too weeks to place an advert during Coronation Street or during the FA CUP to state that he's fighting for a "World title".

Did Loughran have any marketable qualities that several sky fighters didn't.... No.

However, I have alot of mates who are usually lay fans of boxing who have sky, they like a good fight - but they don't like bad ones and they won't watch if it doesn't appeal. Most of the time I tell them "oh Ricky Hatton's fighting next week, or watch DLH vs Moseley, should be a cracker" - but I don't mention if Roy Rutherford or somebody is topping the bill, cause my mates won't be interested. Now wouldn't it be better if Sky, for boxing sakes, focused on the big bills - now the new generation of exiting fighters could work the undercard - like ITV were doing with Robin Reid and Adrian Dodson before the switch. If their good enough, my mates should phone me and ask "when is Joe bloggs fighting, he looks like a world champion".

Of course, being a "hardcore fan" I would gladly watch boxing every night, but I don't believe it would pay dividens in the long term for the masses - cause they get bored.

By not having so many fights a year, but always meaningful bouts, ITV had the time to do what essentially I am doing to my mates - telling them when these significants bouts occur. By having boxing on at least once a week, Sky doesn't have the time to give every event the advertising it needs.

Although I understand your philosophy Stu, I have to strongly disagree with you on this. I remember in the late 80s when Sky moved into football. They were showing any old shit (and still do) and the people said, including hardcore fans of the sport like you are of boxing, "who wants to watch this sub-standard rubbish?"

However, people who didn't or couldn't go to the live event did start to watch it as at that time, there wasn't as much coverage as now. Momentum built up and then Sky steamed in by nicking the Premiership. Prices for TV, and at grounds absolutely rocketed and the cry was 'people won't put up with this'. It is more popular than ever.

Football coverage is surely at saturation point but shows no signs of slackening, despite the views of true fans that there is 'overkill'. Some, like you and I for boxing, watch as much as we can. Others will pick and choose. The lay fan of boxing has much more chance of becoming a true fight fan with MORE and BETTER coverage, not less.

when i said every week, i was referring to it replacing the premiership. It takes alot of efforty, and as bbc are finding it aint easy. Putting an old James Bond film on would get just as many viewers (if not more) and would save time and money.

it would be great if ITV got back into it, dont see it happening.

unfortunately the beeb haven't had any really big fights yet. haye and froch r prospects on the way up and harrison is taking an eternity to make a decent move.

what the beeb need is a big fight like harrison v hide and show it at 9 o clock at night. at the moment no one is caring because its on too late a couple of times now i've dropped off and missed the fights on bbc

itv coming back would be gr8 and more importantly if it was peak time viewing.

Most people haven't got a fornicating Danny (LaRue, not Williams) who herbie hide is.

However, Audley remains a good draw, and people will watch him

Dunno James I'd say Hide is pretty well known by the general public, he was supposed to be the fastest heavyweight since Ali after all.

If ever I mention Herbie to a non-boxing fan they've usually heard of him, although more often than not they're shocked that's he's only 31 and still boxing.

The biggest problem faced is a lack of boxing 'personalities' to capture the public imagination.

It wasn't long ago you had Eubank waltzing about quoting Byron & wearing a monocle, and Nigel Benn "wantin a teaaar up wiv im" etc. It created genuine public interest, not just from boxing fans, but even...my Mum for example.....people not into boxing, but who are intrigued by what might unfold between two characters.

Their boxing skills aside....Calzaghe, Hatton, Eastman, Gomez etc are hardly "personalities" are they.....

David Haye is good looking & articulate: He has the potential star quality to capture the public's imagination.

Audley again is well spoken and "always on TV" e.g. at Ascot or something, and seem intelligent with it.

These two have potential in making appeal to the "masses". The rest very little in my view.

True it does seem a bit that though I have to say Hatton's style does appeal to the man in the street so he can afford to do his talking in the ring. Apart from that spot on, shame really

I believe the ratings for Football is in some decline, especially in the European games - thats why most of the UEFA cup is now shown on BBC Three, 1) to try and boost that channel and 2) it didn't do so well when on terrestial. Now, the UEFA cup is a 2nd rate tournament compared to the champions league - and indicated that people would rather see Quality over Quantity. I also believe a poor world wide ratings for the old cup winners cup was part of the reason why UEFA dropped the whole tournament.

Now, I agree with your theory about the lay boxing fan becoming a true boxing fan, but when its the "2nd rate" (for a lay fight fan) fighters that top these bills and with little long-term build up for the event - as Sky don't advertise a show 2 weeks in advance, then can you imagine the lay fan tuning in. Well, they don't becuase there is nothing to appeal to them, the reaction to Francis vs Skelton I got is "why do I want to watch a fight featuring the guy who Tyson anhilated and a guy I've never heard off". Ricky Hatton, is a big name now - but he's been marketed well - appearing on undercard of huge bills that attracted the lay fans, and doing well. However, if this "2nd rate" fighter was on the undercard of a big bill with lots of build up, there is a more of a chance of the lay fight fan watching him then - if he does well, then the lay fight fan is likely to want to see more of him, to the eventual extent that he can headline a show.

If a fight such as Oliver vs Mullings was on a show that generated some 10-12 million viewers, I wouldn't be surprised that Spencer would have attracted some decent figures as a headline act in his next fight - if the proper long-term advertising for his fight was done.

Id love it if the 2 main British tv companies broadcasting boxing were both terrestrial but how would pay-per-view work. Cant see it to be honest. I dont think Haye, Harrison and Froch are the only good boxers that the BBC have. Eastman, while his last fight wasnt easy on the eye, is looking at World titles now. Herbie Hide v Danny Williams fingers crossed looks like it may be on the BBC. Robin Reid v Sven Ottke was on BBC (although I wish I hadnt seen that fight after the result.) Clinton Woods I would exect to carry on with the BBC. Theres plenty there.

Hatton is from the blue-collar 'honest tradesman' school, a no-nonsense style and humble personality.

Hatton's fights provide all the excitement needed, and the fact that he isn't brash suits that.

However, a lot of this is also due to the fact that Benn's profile was carefully built in the public eye on prime time TV for all to see, given the right exposure those characters can be built again.

You have to remember than Eubank and Benn didn't just emerge from some sort of pupa ready to roll, they were manouevered and managed and to an extent given a profile. Nigel Benn's ridiculous deack dempseyesque haircut certainly wasn't his idea, neither was calling himself the dark destroyer.

Ratings for football are not in decline. Apart from highlights shows. As you say, things like the UEFA cup may be given to less prominent channels to boost their ratings...because people will watch it. It did fine on terrestrial but the Beeb are trying to get more and more people over to the inaccurately named Freeview.

The UEFA cup is certainly a second-rate competition compared to the CL and I totally agree that people go for quality. But they still watch the UEFA cup if nothing else is available.

Showing more boxing will only help the sport. If it is shite, people will not watch but once in a while they will catch a Gatti-Ward they didn't expect. I would argue that football has proved the profile of a sport is raised by more coverage, even if it is of poor quality. Sometimes you have to watch the shit to appreciate the class. I don't think catching the odd poor fight would turn someone off for life.

Having rubbish every week can only be damaging though, granted, and I do take your point about the importance of careful marketing.

I do agree with your comments, but how will the "lay fans" know that Gatti vs Ward was going to be the classic it was - if they weren't tuning in. Luckily for my mates, I told them that Ward beat Shey Neary a few years ago - they'd heard of him (Neary), so they tuned in. However, I didn't realise that fights such as Oliver vs Mullings was going to be a classic - so none of my mates tuned in.

A suggestion might be to show an impressive bill say every other week of quality, no less than a British title fight, and bring back the major fights on prime time (even if its delayed - ala Hagler vs Leonard). Then show these "lesser" but exiting action, or even the poorer action - on these shows on a video playback. Us "hardcore" fans who can see the action live on another digitial channel (whether that is ITV 2 or a Sky Sports channel) - where as the mainstream will have the best of the action, that we won't mind seeing again anyway.

Just want to make this clear to people

ITV IS IN TALKS WITH allegedly TO TAKE HATTON, CALZAGHE, SCOTT HARRISON, MATT SKELTON, KEVIN MITCHELL and some others to ITV to fill in the Saturday night football slot!

The Deal probably won't start till 2005 and is for between 15-20 Live boxing shows a year! plus a weekly highlight show with guys talking about fights from around the world!

This is not rumour or speculation but truth!

ITV need to fill that slot with more than just another BOND movie because of the lost revenue from Sponsorship and Advertising.

The reason ITV were able to put on big fights before was because of Boxing being the perfect sport for Advertising, technically you could have an advert every 3 minutes unlike live soccer.

Whether Warren agree's on a deal is something we'll have to find out!

If you don't believe, Just phone his offices and ASK HIM(or more likely his secretary) but DO IT IN A CRAFTY WAY because he won't tell you outright!

Or just phone ITV

To get an answer why dont you phone Brian Barwick, Head of ITV Sport on 020 7843 8000 or write to him at 200 Grays Inn Road, London WC1X ORA?

Yeah that's right nasty, companies are just begging to be associated with a sport where people can be potentially bludgeoned into a wheelchair or killed, it's the kind of positive image any company would wish to be associated with.

A man lies comatose in the corner of the ring, blood seeps from his ear, the ad break comes on.....

A catchy tune beings, a woman trills at the top of her voice....
"....Gillette, the best a maaaaan can geeeeeet"

Beautiful, sales of Gillette razors plummet, everyone's happy.

Pick up any boxing magazine, and look at the companies who advertise in there, how many high profile blue-chip companies take ads out, absolutely none, why? Because they don't want to be associated with boxing in any way.

Boxing has struggled for advertising for a long time now, it's a risk most big companies aside from beer makers don't want to take....

I'm not saying it cannot be done, but I just don't see it myself.

They can re-run a touch of frost with just the same if not more viewers, 8 million an episode, and it comes with a sponsor attached if I remember rightly.

I understand your point but Advertising works differently than that

One of the reasons the BBC show's recorded highlights instead of live streaming is exactly because of what you say and they'd have time to pull the program!

There is a great deal of advertising for Boxing, that's not the problem. Ring Injuries are a thing of the past now and advertisers are coming back!

What you fail to understand is that lots of these Big Companies always have big boxing fans in it like Donald Trump!

I'll be shocked if by the start of 2005, ITV isn't showing LIVE BOXING!

Its probably gonna happen so why fight it!

IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME

RING Brian Barwick, Head of ITV Sport on 020 7843 8000 and say you are from an internet boxing site and can he confirm or deny rumours that ITV MIGHT BE GETTING BACK INTO BOXING IN 2OO5!
