cleaning up your own backyard

Post by pawpaw »

in a boxing backwater like oz, for a fighter to get any credibility he needs to clean up his own backyard. he should at least be australian champ, unless the aussie champ is also a world champ.

we have some great competition here in oz. there is no need to go further afield to get competition in the early stages of a boxers career.

however, some fighters, avoid the good local competition and prefer to inflate their records against fighters from overseas, all of whom are either losers, has beens, and never weres.

there is no excuse for neglecting to fight the local talent. unless fear of defeat is an excuse.

It seems protecting the 0 is all important these days... until you step up and get whooped because you haven't been tested...

australian heavyweights. none of them will fight eachother for one reason or another. is there one world class HW between them? NO!!! so who they fight in their careers will be purely academic. one of them may step up and be the benchmark for aussie heavys by fighting all local comers. like big bob did. but i doubt it. actually, there isnt a chance in hell any of them will. the day we get a local heavy that will or can challenge all australian heavyweights, will be the day we finally have a decent heavyweight.

we will have to watch them avoid eachother and fight second rate overseas opponents for a few more years yet......

marlin got it so right.

Meehan beat everybody in Australia before going international. He has won most of his fights against overseas fighters as well. If any Australian heavy thinks he can beat him, he only needs to make a challenge.

Mark De Mori scored a very impressive UD8 over Former World Title challenger Ed Mahone the other day. A very good win, and yes whilst not against one of the Aussie Heavys a good win none the less!

Looked like a good win. He could be someone to keep boxing on the map in West Aust now Greeny has gone, but Mark is now also talking about going overseas to fight....

de mori is no up and comer. he's a local palooka, that avoids fighting australias best heavyweights.

who the hell is de mori? who is the no6 in any division in oz???? he wont fight the top 5 here in oz. so why is there ANY talk of him at all? he wont fight solomon haumono, alex leapai, kali meehan, etc.

de mori might be an ok bloke, but his shameless self promotion leaves his avoidence of local talent open to discussion.

running to the US in the hope that some promoter will feed him on a diet of bums just to get a payday one day, does not impress me. it shouldnt impress anyone.

clean up the local talent...then post threads about yourself !

De Mori has a 13-1-2 record fighting in Australia and New Zealand. his last victory was against a fighter who has been with champions. If he has been offered big money to fight overseas, why shouldn't he take it? Apart from Mirovic (who is only allowed to fight every blue moon) and Meehan (who is a cut above) who is there left for him to fight here?

Paw PAw, i did not create any threads about myself, if you look at the one i created i note i did not mean to create it but respond to the original one, i didnt even title it but then a mod i assume gave it a title, you have made some assumptions about me that are not correct, feel free to send me a message if you want to know anything or ask on a post, you seem to be a critic of mine ona few boards which is fine, i hope in the future you change your mind :TU:

that was a very measured response mark. i would have been pissed off if i was you. no doubt you were clenching your teeth writing it! after all, a boxer with no agression.....well ive never even heard of one of them!!

i have been a bit harsh, i know. like i said, no doubt you are a good bloke. but as im not fighting, im relegated to fan status, which gives me the right to be a backyard critic. you however are fighting, and someone we talk about as you for one reason or another have been brought to our attention.

its pretty normal for boxers to be called out to face one opponent or another. look at the flack mundine cops for making money by fighting bums. so you have to wear it, as you will be called apon to clean up the local talent before jetting off. especially as leapai has repeatedly said he wants a re match.

so its nothing personal. it just a fan discussing a boxer. ytou happen to be a poster also. which is a little unusual in the world of fans and sportsmen. being in the public eye you will not get it all your own way. but your post proves you can handle it. many would have spat the dummy.

still, id like to see you fight at least one of the three ive mentioned. but do whatever you want. mundine does.......but he did clean up the locals. even dragged them out of old peoples homes.....joe bugner anyone...?

good luck. :TU:

look at the flak pittman copped for not fighting the locals before sturm. some went so far as to say he wasnt ready BECAUSE he hadnt cleaned up the locals. the same blokes have defended de moris right NOT to fight the locals before he fights overseas !!!!

With Geale holding the IBO Middleweight title and Mundine holding the WBA Super Middleweight title, it would really be harsh saying Pittman should have "cleaned up his own backyard" before going overseas. Australia is well represented in middles & super middles with Soliman and Bika doing well overseas as well.

brutus.

i said in my post to clean up the locals unless one was a WC. also, you ask who is there here in marks class to fight, besides kalo? alex leapai whom mark nearly beat, except he got dropped twice....solomon haumono who needs no introduction. both of these would be a good start...

Pittman

[look at the flak pittman copped for not fighting the locals before sturm]

Just wondering who you think Pittman should have faced - offers were made and none were accepted plenty of times - some accepted fights with Pittman then asked for $$$$ that they knew promoters wouldn't have any chance of coming up with ie pricing themselves out of the fight.

And no, Dan Geale wasn't one of them and when these two guys paths cross down the track it will be a great fight and one for fans of boxing rather than fighting!!!!![/quote]

They are completely diffrent, Pittman went overseas to fight a world champion in his first bout. DeMori is going there to fight and learn not to take on Klitshko and Peter in his first fight there.

pittmans first fight????

mark has some good competition here. there are potentially some great match ups for mark that would create a lot of interest and no doubt some good $ for mark.

he doesnt need the us for opponents, money, or interest. there are fights here, $, and plenty of interest in finding australias best heavyweight....

who is australias best current HW? fucks me!!! they wont fight eachother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and in defence of mark, none of the heavies will fight eachother for one reason or another. solo, hoppa, alex wont fight eachother. utter bullshit i recon!!!! no one wants the oz title bad enough. seems its lost its value????

His first overseas fight is what i should have said. I agree our Aussie title is fairly meaning less and its not the only one most belts nowdays including world titles are worthless.
There should be 1 belt per division and it would surely sort out these 3-4-5 division champions that in reality would have been champs in 1 or 2 division in past eras.
