Witter needs to take the short end of the purse and go beat a "name" opponent. Only when he does this will he get "big" fights. A fight with the winner of the Holt/Torres rematch would be a start. But the problem is apart from Hatton and maybe Malignaggi there aren't any names at LWW. And at 34 he's running out of time. I think he's on the slide already you know - with a style that is based on reflexes and not on technical soundness it will be hard to carry on successfully past 35 - I also remember him looking tired in the later rounds against Kotelnik and N'dou.
He could possibly land himself a final eliminator and force a shot at a title, it's a far better division at 147 and someone like Cintron, Judah, Clottey, Williams, Quintana... might want to try and force themselves back into contention with a win over Witter. I admit it's not a fool proof strategy, but it's better than him spending his last few years trying to get a BIG fight at 140 IMOstates wrote:Chambers, the reason none of the 147 lb'ers would fight Witter is the same as the reasons Hatton won't fight him: It's just not worth it. You could get beaten, even if you win, you won't look good, and you ain't going to get much kudos from the boxing world if you do win.
Besides, the Hatton fight is much hyped because they're both Brits. You really think anyone in the States is going to be calling for Cotto/Margarito etc to take on Witter in a voluntary? No chance. Let's not convince ourselves that the welterweights are selfless warriors, showing their courage for our benefit. None of them will fight Witter through choice. And, unlike over here, none of the U.S. press or fans will give a shit that they won't do it.
I don't think Witter gets directly praised that much on here, it's more that the strong majority on here see a massive injustice in Hatton ducking him. He gets indirect praise through Hattons yellow-bellied anticsCaptain Hook wrote:Nice one States, a realistic answer....
Witter is a good boxer, nobody is saying any different, but he's a dullard, awkward and has done nothing to endear himself to the public...even in this country he doesn't sell any tickets.
Good performance v Harris, and good luck to him v Bradley, but he doesn't deserve the praise he gets on here.
He gets more praise and props on Boxrec than arguably any other British boxer, even more than Calzaghe and Haye.
Thing is Stu, he forced himself into a mandatory position at 140, and what happened? Mayweather fucked off to 147, and Junior had that borefest against Corley. Same could happen at 147. I'm not saying it's an ideal situation at the moment, but at least he has a belt, and the publicity from goading Hatton. I just think that at 147, he's even more of a nobody.

How dare you say that!banjo wrote:DG. wrote:Chambers2 wrote:Fair play to Bradley for stepping up and taking this fight on away turf, he's acted how a boxer should act when he's given a title shot - unlike some we could mention.
Hopefully a great night.
And a good win for Witter
Top ten P4P is Junior
Top figher at LWW
Only time will tell if he gets the big fights.
Nice to see someone step up and have guts..
Dennis the menace always seems to sneak in a pop at Ricky 'Tickling Contest' Hatton.
All I do is speak the truth
Thousands can confirm this!
Take that to the bank
Only Way Hattonnfight Witter is Hatons dreams
Never doubt me!
Go on Hatton - grow a pair!
A Coward called Hatton I say!
You piss head chav.
Hatton had a big Interview in Boxing Monthly - I did not bother reading it, the boy is a walking talking arse.
And as Banjo said, Its not a Ticklinggggggggg Contest - Man of the people - did you know I play darts?

I mentioned Cotto because he would fight ANYONE and just mentioned Collazo because he would fight Witter, imo.states wrote:So, what you're saying is that Cotto isn't that much of a risk-taker. I notice you also mentioned Collazo amongst the 147 risk-takers.DG. wrote:Cotto offered Witer a fight once, but with 2 weeks notice!states wrote:None of those names would fight Witter, DG, unless they absolutely had to. And that situation isn't going to come about, as you well know.
Well, not one is fighting Witter at light welter he might as well try at a higher weight , but hold onto his belt if he can!
A previous post of mine shows Cotto is a risk taker.
Quintanta
Mosley
Torres ( when he was an unknown to us - but known to Cotto)
Margarito up next.
147 has real fighters, Judah is a more of a fighter than all at 140 - excluding Witter who had proven he will fight anyone.

Fight for the WBU belt and get drunk all day every day and you might one day be called a Man of the people!banjo wrote:I play darts with my friends and i've risked my life for my country, but I don't see anyone calling me 'Man Of The People'DG. wrote:Did you know he plays darts and get this......with his friends!banjo wrote: 'fat chav biitch'

Agree. Collect more belts at 140 to force HBO and Hatton's hand.Terry D wrote:Witter cannot entice anyone to fight him at LWW. He is going to give up his only bargaining tool, his rapidly diminishing WBC title, to confront Cotto-Margarito demanding a fight against the winner?
Welterweight is one of the blue chip divisions in boxing. There is no space for a Witter fight there.
He is yet to become an attraction at LWW, why lose all he has worked for to chase fights at WW? It is a nonsensical suggestion.
The only way to do it.
but Mallignaggi holds the other belt and is lined up for Hatton and that leaves a Kotelnik rematch that he'd no doubt have to enter the arse end of Germany for even if Kotelnik did fancy it, personally I think he'll be looking to capitalise on his belt financially with a couple of easier defences.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Agree. I'm not saying Witter should vacate and move up, just that they should explore avenues at 147 and try to line him up a BIG fight, as other than (and because of) Hatton there aren't many BIG fight option possibilities at 140
Terry, you seen or heard much about Bradley?Terry D wrote:Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Agree. This upcoming fight might be another stinker. Bradley will rush forward, if Witter's not sharp on the counter they will tie and then back to rush and pause.
Second half of the fight might be Ok, if both can put out shots at that point.
I think it could be a poor fight unless Bradley gets bombed early and does not like the power.
Cheers, I suppose alot depends on how good Bradleys chin is. I hope he comes to take Witter out and throws plenty of leather, that's when Juniors at his best IMO i.e the opposite of the Corley fightTerry D wrote:Seen a few of his fights, getting some more. Going to watch them again tonight to see if I am being harsh. I sit in bed chilling at night and put boxing on the PC along with music. It creates a montage effect, or something. I've yet to see anything from Bradley that makes me think 'Whew!'.
To add balance the first few rounds of Hatton-Lazcano could be pretty poor.

the UK does have a lot of messy fighters, doesn't it? Hatton, Witter, Calzaghe, Froch...Terry D wrote:Seen a few of his fights, getting some more. He looked like a little pocket battery type of guy. whatever happened to short, clean punching and keeping your chin down?
How much longer can Witter keep doing this? I'll bet he could fight a decent Yank hope every year. This year it's Bradley though it was supposed to be D-Hopkins. Next year it could be Lamont Peterson. Maybe the year after Devon Alexander?
Got to admire Junior's patience and persistence. To remain in good shape while all the big fights slip by.

Well if he sets a good pace, and can keep it up - we will find out about Witter also.Terry D wrote:He looked lively but leaves himself open the more a fight goes on, and he is pretty open to start with. What did Bradley look like later on... did his pace decrease.
I think a good chinned fighter can get to Witter late.
Cause Corley etc didn't really set a pace.

A bit like B-Hopalong to the Surburbs now, son. Hopkins against Calzaghe - Witter makes opponents reluctant to come in.stujones wrote:Well if he sets a good pace, and can keep it up - we will find out about Witter also.Terry D wrote:He looked lively but leaves himself open the more a fight goes on, and he is pretty open to start with. 'IF' I get the dvd of Bradley BEFORE the fight
Witter makes people stay on the outside once they get hit.
