MARK THOMPSON – Has finally been matched for his Masters International Title fight this Saturday evening and takes on Mauryey Gojko from Poland .

26th APRIL SHOW AT ROBIN PARK ARENA – This 9 fight show is looking good with Mark supported by Brian Rose , Jon Kays , Alex Matvienko and 5 debutants .

PRO DEBUTS - Tameo Dwyer , Mike Robinson , Lee Jennings , Chris O Brian and Alistair Morrison will all make there debuts on the show at Wigan. Tickets available from any boxers , the venue or payment on the night.

MARTIN MURRAY – Moved to 5-0 with a 40-36 points win last Friday over Jamie Tucker from Doncaster . Martin will now box on the under card to Mike Gomez on the 23rd May and then top a bill in St Helens on the 15th June where he will box an International contest.

WWW.VIPBE.CO.UK – Tickets are on sale via this website for the VIP promotion on the 23rd May at Robin Park Arena in Wigan which is a must for boxing fans who will be in Manchester for the next days Ricky Hatton event at the City Stadium.

Mark Thompson weighed in slightly under at 66.66KG and Gojko came bang on the button at 66.68KG - 10st 7lb.

All ringside tickets have been sold but £30.00 general ones will be available on the night at the venue. It is a 9 fight card and looks good value for money even if I say so myself.

I am going to say it again!!!

Mr Wood is a "dark horse" in this promotional game - I say this because he has got quite a large stable of boxers - this latest show sees 5 debutants!!!

Surely the TV executives can see this and I cannot see Mr Wood being a difficult person to deal with.

I remain convinced Steve Wood could make it on his own!!! - Sorry Mr Maloney just an opinion!!!

With no disrespect to that Polish guy fighting in the main event, he is coming off four losses (abeit to good opposition) - and his wins are against very limited opponents.

The result of this "title fight" is a forgone conclusion.

Likewise Matvienko V Smith- Surely there is a better opponent for an undeafeated fighter on 10 wins than a journeym an who has lost something like 30 in a row?

I don't mean to be the eternal critic, but at some point VIP do need to start matching up their fighters with a higher quality of opposition.

Find another tasty looking unbeaten prospect, someone who will bring some fans, and match them up with one of the VIP prospects. Sure, one guy will have to lose, but its a much more attractive fight. Also a loss to a good fighter can be a better long term learning experience than a string of meaningless wins.

I'm not picking on VIP, or trying to say other promotions are (necessarily) better- But most other shows do try to stage at least one or two fights that are well matched, and its those fights that are the draw (IE the reason I'd travel and pay £30) for me.

When I've been to VIP shows (and similar promotions like this) I've enjoyed them, but the promotions I've really liked have always been the ones with some really well fought fights between well matched fighters- both who really have something to gain- and something to lose.

Recent examples- Hughes V Pickering- a horrid undercard, but an amazing main event. Khan V St Claire- a mediocore main event, but a great fight between Jennings and Minter was the highlight.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say Pickering-Hughes had a “horrid undercard”. Yes, there was the odd stinker – Jack Perry-Kristian Laight and Duane Parker-Lance Verallo (Duane tried to do the best he could in the situation) – but Sammy Horton-Lee Noble was good, Matthew Hainey-James Tucker was decent and Adnan Amar-Ian MacKillop was, on paper at least, the Nottingham man’s toughest test.

Records aren’t important to me. I’ve seen some cracking fights involving fighters with negative records. Ernie Smith may be involved in an odd snoozefest, but I’ve seen him in some cracking fights in the last year, a six-round war with Birmingham’s James McKinley springs to mind.

Actually, yeah- Hainy-Tucker was good- and well matched- two inexperienced guys, a well matched fight.

Maybe I'm being a bit hard on that undercard- I think the hour late start annoyed me at the time!

Stevie Woods is doing a great Job and is one of the better small hall promoters out there.

Yeah- I do agree that VIP have a lot of potential- a talented stable of fighters, and regular shows- two things that are required for long term success.

And agreed- Journeymen opponents can be counted on to put up a good performance, usually going to points (although very rarely winning.)

But as I said above, to progress further- and draw wider support- I do think they need to be looking at main events and cheif supports that have a wider appeal- ie meaningful, close fights.

Maybe they could look at a show along the lines of "prizefighter"- something with a more general appeal: As such, one potential suggestion is a "Lancashire V Yorkshire " show, or a "Manchester V Liverpool show. "

Anything that can generate a bit of wider interest is good!

Good first round win for Mark Thompson- VIP probably should think about matching him now against a good domestic Welterwieght- there are a lot of quality fighters in that division, and some potential cracking match ups.

Likewise Alex Mattveinko at Middle- some good domestic fighters in that division. EG Lee Noble, Steve Bendall, Cello Renda- all good fighters who I think are about at the same level as him.

So yeah- could be some cracking fights in the months ahead!
