Archie Moore - amazing

I know it's not strictly British but Eric Armit has a free reign as far as I'm concerned.

In a piece on light-heavyweights he does an overview of 'The Old Mongoose' - I know the anoraks/historians on here will enjoy it - and there's even more reason to take a look if you don't know about Archie Moore.

Absolutely amazing athlete.

Read a great story about Moore when he was over here to defend his light-heavyweight title against Yolande Pompey.

A journalist whose name escapes me was having dinner with the ol' Mongoose and said the Moore would chew his meat, then discreetly spit it into a napkin.

He marvelled at the great man's dedication to his sport and willingness to forgo food, merely chewing the goodness from the meat and discarding the chewed flesh as part of the preparation for the fight.

Then, as dinner drew to a close, the journalist politely declined dessert out of respect to the great man, deeming it unfair considering the fighter wasn't even eating his meat.

When the waiter asked Moore if 'sir would like dessert' Moore also declined, but then asked for 'a double cognac and one of your finest cigars please'.

Always liked that story.

Now is this story true? that in the Marciano v Moore fight , Moore knocked down Marciano in the 2nd round and the Ref then gave Rocky a standing 8 count, which wasn't in the rules. And Moore said this robbed him of his chance to Kayo Rocky

in his autobiography Archie claimed he learnt the trick of chewing the goodness out of the food and then spitting it out from the Aborigines he met during the time when he lived/boxed in Australia.

I think it was in the first, I don't think Marciano was in danger of being put away from what I've read

Read Hauser's book, he puts a different spin on it. More to do with when Moore was an old fighter and needed Ali's help.

I guess he never forgave Archie, who was his idol at the time.

I think I got that from Hausers book actually, but I read it about 14years ago. Apparently Ali wouldn't do the washing up and was lazy with household chores so Moore had enough of him and wanted to see what his career had left. Did Moore try to change Alis style?

Moore said he was impressed with Alis speed running up hills, Ali said Moore told him not to go off too fast and pace himself, he said he left Moore for dead but a few miniutes later Moore was right alongside him

Moore later said Ali wouldnt have taken half the punnishment if he had Ali long enough to teach him how to finnish an opponent with 1 shot. Moore trained Shavers, Foreman and a few other legendary punchers and ofcourse was an amazing KO artist himself

It didn't indicate it in the book that Archie tried to change his style, but Clay was apparently very head strong as a kid and lazy with the chores, as you say.

According to Dundee, he never forgave him and decided to teach him a lesson in the fourth.

He was a cocky little bastard, but I guess he had the skills to back it up.

Loking back maybe Clay should have learned from Moore. He took a lot of shots in the latter parts of his career, more than Moore took as he got older. Maybe Clay could have learned a few tricks from the old man and stored them away for later life.

This thread topic always makes me hum the George Michael song 'Amazing', that is good, the song is awesome.
Yeah, Dundee said that after 67 he simply wasn't able to move like he used to, which he relied on heavily to keep him away from sluggers like Liston and Williams.

Imagine how good he'd have been under Moore's tutoring. :o

Good article.... I hope people not familar with Archie get to read it.

One thing I think that doesn't get emphasised alot, even amongst his fine acheivements, was how he adapted with the weight. I mean, he could be at 200 lbs one fight, next fight he would lost close to 30 lbs.

When Roy did the same, look at the how it affected his career - Archie did this on a regular basis, and from the stuff I have seen of him... didn't look a fat heavyweight. He would put it on in muscle.

Another thing worth metioning was that he might have gone on even longer as a Light Heavyweight champion. He only retired cause the commisions basically forced him to stop (well, this is what I have read elsewhere). He retired as the Champion.

Brilliant fighter.... should always be mentioned when discussing the G.O.A.T - although his defeats to Charles possibly cost him that accolade.

When I was doing the research for the Sugar Ray Robinson book 'Peerless', I came across a great story about Robinson and Moore meeting up to discuss a possible fight.

Archie assumed that the purse money would be split evenly between the two of them but Ray's ego wouldn't allow this. Archie politely listened to the 80:20 spilt proposed before teling his wife to get her coat as they were leaving. A proper gentleman.

terry has more than once besmirched his arguments by confessing devotion to the music of george michael. i think george would have improved considerably as a songwriter if he had been trained by archie moore.
