'Fess Up Time --- A Little Fun...
I'd have to say Roy Jones too. To me he wanted all the acclaim of a p4p great without taking the risks... But what I really dislike, I guess, is that some people actually bought the hype. A great fighter, but he never proved himself to be worthy of some of the accolades thrown around. He also lost his abilities overnight once he got shaken down for banned substances...
Other than Toney there's nobody worthy of acclaim that he took on (Hopkins was an accident as nobody realised that he would become a top fighter).
He shouldn't have the 'S' for Superman on his chest but a big '?'.

here's the typical brit response to jones. if you hate jones, fine but don't make up things to try and validate your point. i hate pretty much every brit and euro fighter there is because there basically all crap. get a title and hide facing nobodys. then call out the real fighters and act like you belong or wait until they get old and actually fight them. lennox is the only one i think is an all-time great in the past 20 years. jones lost his abilities overnight after he got shaken down for banned substances?? what a bunch of crap. he came down in weight after winning a heavyweight title, that's what messed him up. the only time he tested positive was in 2000 after the hall fight for andro. andro was a legal supplement sold over the counter then but not legal in a title fight. there's no big jones steroid scandal. the dude has to take a drug test after every fight.Ezzard wrote:I'd have to say Roy Jones too. ezzard, you have a lot in common with the american boxing media. they don't like jones either. i'll say this again, jones is judged differently than all other fighters and that's what makes him great.

What does it matter where Ezzard is from? Because Great Britain hasn't as many great fighters doesn't mean his opinions are any less valid.
Winning a title title and duck all the real fighters? That is what British fighters do? What do you think Jones did?
Dariusz Michalczewski was by far his best potential opponent for most of the years that Jones was a lightheavyweight and Jones could have fought him anytime between 1996-2003. I never heard Jones "call out" Michalczewski one time. Never heard him even mention his name once. Instead we were treated to the likes of Glen Kelly, David Telasco and Richard Frazier.
The media hated him? HBO which is probably the biggest media outlet for boxing sure didn't hate him. They showed all his fights, rarely criticizing him. They should have been screaming for a fight with Michalczewski, but barely ever even mentioned his name.
Jones was a great talent, however you shouldn't consider a guy a legend if he won't fight the best opponents available.

everyone has opinions no matter where they're from but again, don't make things up to validate your point. there were reportedly talks between dm and jones but it stopped when neither fighter was going to leave their home country. dm is just as much to blame if not more for the fight not happening. i feel like even if jones beat dm, it would have meant nothing. the same critics would say that he hadn't beat anyone. hbo loved jones because they tried to make money from him but i disagree about him never receiving criticism. that's all larry merchant did/does. boxing writers also basically hate jones, especially the ring magazine.Ambling Alp wrote:What does it matter where Ezzard is from? yes, it would have made jones the "undisputed" champ but the linear title is crap. that linear title started with naming the winner of the virgil hill-henry maske fight the linear champ. jones was the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world and had a title in the division during that time. what a joke. funny how you hear most people saying that calzaghe is the real "recognized" champ because he holds the ring belt. when jones held that title, most people didn't give him that recognition.Goodnight, Irene wrote:"...i feel like even if jones beat dm, it would have meant nothing..." - BJer

It would've made Jones the linear (read: REAL) Light-Heavy champ, something he sadly never accomplished.
Michalczewski deserves his share of the blame too, though.
How do you know I'm British? Or what makes you think I'm British?bjermaine wrote:here's the typical brit response to jones. if you hate jones, fine but don't make up things to try and validate your point. i hate pretty much every brit and euro fighter there is because there basically all crap. get a title and hide facing nobodys. then call out the real fighters and act like you belong or wait until they get old and actually fight them. lennox is the only one i think is an all-time great in the past 20 years. jones lost his abilities overnight after he got shaken down for banned substances?? what a bunch of crap. he came down in weight after winning a heavyweight title, that's what messed him up. the only time he tested positive was in 2000 after the hall fight for andro. andro was a legal supplement sold over the counter then but not legal in a title fight. there's no big jones steroid scandal. the dude has to take a drug test after every fight.Ezzard wrote:I'd have to say Roy Jones too. "i hate pretty much every brit and euro fighter there is because there basically all crap." - that's a quality observation, right there... Do you expect people to take you more seriously or less seriously now? When it comes down to it though you are mistaking me for someone who actually cares about your nationalistic nonsense. Who you like or dislike is of no cosequence to me and your idea that I fit some British stereotype is laugable. I'm not sure where you knowledge is most lacking: Boxing? Britain? Europe? one thing is for certain and that's you know nothing about me or Roy Jones (a multi-millionaire who is so happy that you're defending him that he probably wouldn't p155 on you if you were on fire).
Any fighter who thinks he's one of the greatest ever, but never took the big fights, gets judged harshly (that's my point).
I criticise anyone who lives on some kind of legend status but is not prepared to back it up. Recently Ali has been coming under the microscope... ALI: the man who fought everyone in his division. A true great who really deserves to be lauded. Then there's Ray Leonard another great who comes in for criticism. hagler... these guys were the top of the sport and fought everyone. Somehow Jones wants the mantle but missed out on about a dozen fights (none of them his fault, of course) whilst he beat up Vinnie pazienza and the only real plus for Jones is that he looked better than Greg Haugen did when he pulled off the same trick 8 years earlier and 5 divisions lighter...
Between Woods and Ruiz Jones put on 20 lbs, and he didn't look soft like Spinks or Eddie gregg. he was 31 at the time so had grown as much as he would have... A pro-boxer has a vigorous work out, try putting on 20 lbs when you have a work-out routine like a world champion does. Body builders put on bulk because they lift, eat, sleep and do nothing else...
here we are talking about greats like say langford who never got the recognition and you're asking me to buy the Jones product? I'm fine with Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore and Harold Johnson
ah yes, this is a response that granberry can be proud of. how do i know you're british? i guess i really don't but the uk on your location kind of gave it away. I could be of any nationality of ethnic background... Obviously the opinions matter to you otherwise you wouldn't have spat your pacifier out...
I'm sure your thoughts are a comfort to you, but, for the sake of your own health, never play with matches...
