sticking with a domestic trainer, for me, is a good move. having trained both duke and honeygan, know one can doubt that powell knows what he is doing............that said he is no roach, mcgirt or m,wther.

why not give a british guy a shot......you never know, it could be the making of both of them!!!!!!!

Powell is a good trainer... he might have his criticisms, especially as a match maker, but I think he is a very underated trainer and corner man.

It's McGirt isn't it?

Powell is no better than Harrison, Harrison deserved better than to find out on TV.

Dean Powell is a bloody good trainer and works tirelessly behind the scenes - got a lot of time for the bloke.

However I simply cannot get away from it - in my humble opinion Oliver Harrison has been treated like a piece of sh*t - if only Oliver could go on record to say a few things on here or in the media - it would enlighten a lot of people and at the very least even things out in that people would have both sides of the story.

Oliver cannot go on record as there is some sort of confidentiality clause whilst he is still in contract - that contract is still in operation until a few weeks.

Doesnt surprise me!.... funny how people who use these 'confidentiality' tricks always treat others like shit.... if you want a new trainer fair enough, but at least treat the guy whose taken you this far with a bit of respect... I guess Khans blaming Harrison for the fact that he still cant take a decent shot... maybe Buddies discovered how to grow iron chins....

Good point!! He seems to give Calzaghe some very good advice in the corner when he's needed it!! I think it'll be good for Khan as he'll bring something new to the table... :box:

Oh Dear, Mickey Duff's former runner boy. The man who likes grilled tomatoes on toast in a cafe?

Dean Powell is a good matchmaker, but is he a tarainer?

If a fighter is good enough, the trainer is not important. Manny Steward being a classic case

Exactly!!!

If any of you met Oliver you would see what a cracking bloke he is - does not have a bad word to say about people - even when I was ranting on the phone to him - he had the occasional chuckle but still didn't slag anyone off whatsoever because that is not in his nature.

Another thing with this whole issue is - Frank W arren - I remain surprisingly convinced that W arren is steering Khan on the RIGHT path - and I cann't believe that Team Khan are trying to steamroller a promoter of W arren's experience into rushing the boxer into something he is clearly not ready for - don't get me wrong - I certainly do not have a soft spot for W arren and never will - but he simply cannot always be criticised and in Khan's case I truly believe he has got his career path on the right track.

As for Dean Powell - I will repeat - nowt wrong with the bloke - immense experience and a good bloke who has knowledge of the sport in all areas - he works tirelessly as a lot of people do - he is not to blame for all of this - but I am sorry I do not believe Powell is any better than Harrison - in addition I fully understand why Team Khan have only got Powell in Temporary - because I am convinced he would NOT be a yes man and would'nt take any sh*t.

In my humble opinion whoever takes over Khans training on a permanent basis has got problems - maybe not with Khan himself - but what comes with him.

Found this - READ the last paragraph!!!

Article taken from The Guardian and written by John Rawling:
An hour working out with the top American trainer Roger Mayweather, watched by the world's leading pound-for-pound fighter, his nephew Floyd Mayweather Jr, helped convince Amir Khan he had done the right thing in ditching his own trainer Oliver Harrison before his recent trip to Las Vegas to watch Joe Calzaghe defeat Bernard Hopkins.

Following the advice of his father, Shah, Khan split with Harrison after the recent victory over Martin Kristjansen, the 17th in his undefeated pro career. Harrison had been with the 21-year-old Commonwealth lightweight champion for three years, having first worked with Khan for his final amateur fight when he reversed the result of the 2004 Olympic lightweight final by defeating the Cuban Mario Kindelan.

"It was amazing having Floyd there watching me work with his uncle," said Khan. "He was telling me what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong. I was on the pads with Roger Mayweather for at least an hour. Floyd said I had speed and power but helped me with my skills, with defensive stuff. He got me moving my hips. In an hour, I'd learned something new."

Harrison had been publicly critical of some of Khan's preparations before his recent fights, and had voiced his worries that Khan had been fulfilling too many public engagements and attending too many press conferences.

The issue came to a head when Harrison declined to attend the final press conference before the Kristjansen fight, when he would normally have been expected to make himself available for interviews. According to Shah Khan, Harrison has not been in contact with any member of his family - including Amir - since the night of the fight.

Shah Khan denied there was a dispute over money, saying: "There were problems behind the scenes but you have ups and downs in any business. These should be resolved by talking round the table, which is what we tried to do, but Oliver has not replied to my phone calls or my texts."

Harrison was unavailable for comment last night but his replacement in the job of training Khan, the promoter allegedly's regular corner-man and matchmaker Dean Powell, said he had spoken with Harrison yesterday and that there were no hard feelings. Powell will take charge of preparations for Khan's next fight, at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on June 21.

Khan's family are keen on employing a leading American trainer to supervise his preparations in the future, but how that might work in practice is less clear. Khan has said he would not be prepared to base himself in the US, which would almost certainly rule out an involvement with the Mayweather gym or the Los Angeles operation of Freddie Roach.

Another possibility is Powell taking over Khan's UK training on a permanent basis but would depend on Khan signing a new agreement with Warren when his present contract - along with his six-fight deal with ITV - ends after the next fight. Warren, who enjoys an amicable relationship with Shah Khan, is in pole position to clinch a new deal but an insider in the Khan camp said: "We will be talking to all interested parties and hearing what they say before we make any decision."
If Team Khan feel Mr W arren has done such a good job -- why talk to others??

My problem is he's been moved toward the WBO ranking. What happens after he gets ranked? It's unlikely SN bring in suitable opposition to build Khan, in case anything goes wrong. The fancy ranking doesn't get risked, but rather sat on. To beat Campbell, it will be a bloody hard job this prematurely. Warren would have to buy Khan every advantage and then some. And if successful, Khan - as world champ - would hardly be the finished article. He would have to fight some seriously crap opponents ala early Calzaghe until he's close to being a rounded pro and the good opponents will all be brought in strictly at the right time.

This rumour about a fight with the WBF champ for a WBO Interwhatsit belt isn't true is it?
