Does Farnell have a chance on Saturday?

Post by bennie »

The Manc takes on Lawrence Murphy for the WBU middleweight title this Saturday in Glasgow. Okay, Farnell has never convinced at middleweight, but we know he can go 12 hard rounds and that's more than we know about Murphy, who has never been past six as a pro.
Does anyone give Farnell a great chance in this one? It will be interesting to see how the bookies call it.

You've got to give Farnell a chance, simply because Murphy is still such a dark horse...he could be anything really. The bookies will probably do what they normally do when confused. Go slight odds on the pair!

Yes, Murphy's stunning win over Elcock was such that we couldn't judge his overall ability.

Of course Arnie's got a chance.
Whatever the result though, I have no idea where the loser will go.
Much depends upon Arnie's performance for me.
If his head's right, and he's prepared properly then I see him winning.
However, if he's cut any corners, then we could see Murphy prevail.
Only one person knows the answer and that is Arnie.
I'll say Arnie this time - but not with a deal of conviction.

Looks about even, just because Murphy is still a question mark really. Not sure he'll blast out Farnell that easily, and if it goes late the odds favour Farnell. While he can certainly hit some, is he as good a puncher as the Elcock win suggests, or is Wayne just a bit vunerable? Home ground I might lean towards Murphy to pull it off - but it's a real 50/50 affair: Arnie has a great chance here.

I cant asses how good Murphy is based on that performance against Elcock. Only thing that was clear is that he's heavy handed.

the only question mark is Murphys stamina.... can he go twelve if necessary?? Farnell has the experience of 12 rounders whilst its all new for Murphy.

Murphy has proven he has better skills, punch and chin than Farnell IMO, he just needs to make sure he is fit enough for 12 and he will win!

He has been getting good sparring in the Peacock so is well prepared

I dont think elcock was vunerable, when your told the guy you are fighting has no pedigree( which we know murphy has) and you dont even get a video of the guy who is challenging you have to say that elcocks management team are a shower off shite, everyone except elcock knew murphy was a big puncher with a excellent amature career. Farnell will tuck up for the first 5 rounds and win on points, but why has he come back up to middle when he said he was ok a light middle?, seems like a strange move to me.

I think its a tough fight to call, mainly because I haven't seen enough of Murphy to judge. We all know that Farnell is a solid enough pro and we know what we're going to get with him (apart from the night he faught Takaloo). I can't say the same for Murphy - remember it was Elcock who was the hyped fighter, he was still a novice - so why did his camp feel decide for him to learn his trade against Murphy. Perhaps that's a signal that maybe Murphy aint all that.

Well there were question marks over his chin even before he got laid out by Murphy. He was out on his feet a few fights before, but hung onto win that one.
But I agree Maloney didn't do him any favours if what you say is true.

Apparently murphy has alot of ko's as a amature, and has always been known as a puncher, he fought howard clarke before Elcock and there was apparently know videos available  , I think Elcock is a solid boxer, who had been off since he beat farnell, dropped a bollock and will learn, since he has changed trainer etc he looked alot better last time out, By the way the odds on murphy for a ko against elcock were really high, the rumers were Elcock was stitched up :o ,

Nice info. How did he look in sparring, Knockout?
Farnell went over to the States with Steve Foster Junior and Jamie Moore recently for a two-week stint at Christy Martin's gym in Florida. He's trained by ex-pro Oliver Harrison, who looks a rising trainer. Both men should be in shape then. This could be a war!

He looks good... tough old boy, did a lot of rounds with Teymour who is a handful for most cruiser weights.

Was also sparring a good lithuanian who will be turning pro soon...

Cheers, knockout. I like the look of Murphy. He seems an intelligent guy who knows what needs to be done. If he does a number on Farnell, then Sky-TV will get behind him in a big way.
