As far as I know he had to end his career because he lost an eye. (I don't remember which eye it was and don't have much material about him...)
Was this accident related to his last fight or did it happen under other circumstances?

After Winning the Pacific Golden Gloves
heavyweight championship in 1939* Hoosman
turnnetd pro, the next year and fought
his way through a career of 65 fights, winning
all but 10, *
He counts as his biggest thrill an "ex*
hibition" in Oakland, Calif., tn 1949 with
Joe Louis—although the bout ended In an
extension of an old feud between the pair,
Louis kayoed Hoosman in the fifth round,
something Hoosman thinks he could have
prevented if he'd known the "exhibition"
was for real*
Hoosman feels that there are better and
easier ways of making a living than box-
Itlig. But he still believes it's a great sport
and helped conduct two boxing clinics for
^merton personnel after his arrival in Europe
in 1950.

after losing a dedsion to Heinz Neuhaus,
and tumed to acting. Besides the 10 films
he has made, he played ''Crown" in Porgy
and Bess for six months and recently has
been featured in a munich stage show

I have a European soul."
Also he was in Munich when Martin Luther King passed
and he broke up a fight when a couple of German youths started chanting
"Black Power" An elderly woman removed her spiked heeled shoe and came close to putting out one of the gangs eye. Al Hoosman removed the youths and stood guard while several people spoke words of remeberance
for King. 1968
Anyone who thinks there was not Big men in Boxing prior to Lennox Lewis they are sadly mistaken. There were a great many including Hoosman and Ewart “ED” Potgieter who stood 7-2 and weighed 325
