Magee's career in jeopardy

Eamonn Magee is due further surgery on Wednesday
The career of WBU welterweight champion Eamonn Magee is in the balance after he suffered a broken leg in an apparent brutal gang beating.
Magee was taken to hospital with a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula after being dragged from his car and attacked in his native Belfast.

At the age of 32, the injury puts the Northern Irishman's future in doubt.

"It's a sickening blow. Eamonn seemed to be on his way to some very big fights," said manager Mike Callahan.
Dont know what to say :o :o :o

Too bad for Magee at this point in his career
All the best for the recovery

This sounds like a planned action to me
You think Magee was involved in "dubious" activities?

This is a shame...but Magee is known as a bit of a bad boy.

Isn't this leg breaking thing a well-known IRA 'punishment'??

I had heard some talk about Magee having IRA connections, but thought it was rubbish...

A nasty, inexcusible act even if he was involved in anything. Can't say it's the biggest surprise ever though.

Although I like Magee a lot as a boxer, he's always come off in interviews as a bit of a loudmouth who was very taken with the whole 'hardman' thing. I was mates with guys like that when I was growing up, until I realised that the best thing you can do is steer well clear. Something nasty happens to them all too often, and you don't want to be around when it does.

Hopefully Eamonn can come back from this, and we'll see his name in the press next to some good news.

Reports suggest that Magee has also had breathing difficulties following this attack so its not only his boxing career that is in danger at the moment.
Apparantly there have been no official complaints from Magee about his attackers as yet.

Hope he has a speedy recovery

Wish him the best, one thing about the sporting life article that I found odd was the FW reportedly said that Magee vs Mitchell was still in intense negotations. Wasn't Mitchell vs Stewart signed and sealed before this incident?

If not, it could explain the sudden opponent change.

The IRA usually punish loyalists.

I'm quite sure that Magee is not involved in "dubious" anything.

The area where the attack happened (the Blacks road) is a relatively well know Loyalist hang-out where sectarian attacks are still fairly common.

An eagle eyed prick will have noticed the CATHOLIC Eamonn in his car and "bravely" encouraged his mob of friends to join him in beating the shit out of him. Real "hard-men."

There'll no doubt be a group of blowhard wankers in Rangers tops boasting about filling in the "paedo pope's boxing champ" as we speak, Knobheads.

To suggest it's anything to do with "The IRA" is a very naive comment, no disrespect.

Apparantly Eamonn is "Stable" let's hope he's up and about again soon.

Mitchell-Magee was never really on, Stu. It was the Belfast Telegraph's David Kelly 'speeling' again.

The leg breaking was usually a punishment handed out by the IRA to CATHOLICS who refused to toe the line, especially drug-dealers and petty thieves who were preying on their own.

My family lives in Armagh and I've heard numerous stories along those lines over the years, about catholic teenagers getting the shit kicked out of them by masked Provos.

I don't know the details of this attack, and have no prior knowledge about Magee's political affiliations or lack thereof, just wanted to clear up a point.

If the IRA punished Protestants, it was usually a lot more than a good kicking that was doled out, the IRA mainly beat their own up to serve as a warning to others....

I didn't actually mean you, mate. If you look our posts were at exactly the same time. I was making ref' to an earlier post.

As it happens, "punishment beatings" are actually doled out to people of the same affiliation (as James points out). If the attack is on somebody of a different affiliation - as I suspect applies to this case - it is an "attack" or more specifically in the north of Ireland (and other places with such political/religious problems) a "sectarian attack."

So in essence Catholic "Punishment beatings" are not usually carried out on loyalists, they are carried out on other Catholics (same applies to loyalists). So you are wrong and right at the same time, sort of :D

More like dealing and not paying their dues. It's all organised crime masquerading as hard line politics.

Of course, the IRA and all terrorist organisations, from the Taliban, to the Tamil tigers, use whatever means fair or foul to fund their operations and mantain

As far as I understood it the reason drug dealers were targetted was for interfering with the IRA's own activities in that area, petty criminals likewise as the IRA like the Mafia were funded by all sorts of criminal activities in addition to fundraising morons in America who cotributed vast amounts of money into their coffers.

However, one has to say, that without the IRA, would the catholics be getting any say whatsoever in the formation of an Irish assembly, quite possibly not. Whislt I'm not a supporter of atrocities against innocent civilians, it's hard to see how else the hard pressed catholics could have gotten a foothold, without the undoubted attention that the IRA gained for their cause.

Anyway, end of political debating on my behalf for one day.

There is no doubt for me that at one tim the IRA served a useful purpose to the oppressed Catholic population of Northern Ireland. They helped stave off Loyalist violence and gave them a voice/power base, even though it was often through the use of unacceptable levels of violence/innocent deaths.

That day is gone (thank God) and so has the need for these 'defenders of the oppressed'. I hope whom ever carried out this sickening attack on Magee is dealt with severley. It was cowardly act most likely carried out by small minded bigots.

"Promoter Warren added: "I was hoping to clinch the Sharmba Mitchell fight for Eamonn today. It's a shocking blow for him and his family."

Yeah right..........

Whats the betting if the same had happened to Calzaghe it would have been: Promoter Warren added: "I was hoping to clinch the Bernard Hopkins fight for Joe today"......

Give us a break Frank....

I take back what I said earlier in the thread. Magee was attacked because of a personal dispute with another man. It was not sectarian. Sorry.
