john Murray - doing things the old fashioned way

I think Fewkes-Murray will be fight of the night. I've been impressed with both but Murray seems to have gone backward after looking so good early in his career but I think thats also due to poor opposition and lay-offs. Fewkes really looks flashy at times - I was really impressed with the way he handled Tontchev. A real 50-50 fight - I was leaning towards Fewkes(who looks to be the naturally bigger guy) but Ive never had to see him grind out a win when the going gets tough - Ive seen Murray do this which makes me lean towards him...erm...nah eff it I reckon Fewkes on points!

I think you're onto something there. I would think it's very hard to get good opp for Murray as he has bashed up a lot of good British class super feathers and lightweights in the gym and thse kind of guys are far more likely to take a lot more money for fighting Olympic star Amir Khan. I know that they tried to get St Clair for Murray before Khan ended up getting him (and I belive Medina & Kevin Kelly as well).

Obviously Murray has some good wins over guys who have beaten good fighters (Guebbas, who beat Hunt; Hickman, who beat Amar, etc). Fewkes will be the best opponent he has faced and this is a Board mandated fight. If ppl have a choice to fight Murray or not, they tend not to if they don't have to, i.e. Thaxton.

I think 2 main things set Murray back - his accident which put him out of the ShoBox fight in Canada last year; and Jon Thaxton beating Lee Meager for the British title. Hennessy has 3 lightweights to take care of and IMO there doesn't appear to be room for the 3 of 'em.

Props to Fewkes for taking this risk and not waiting til Murray vacates. With all respect to Fewkes, I really hope Murray pulls this one off. Coming off the inactivity, and vs a fast slick guy, Murray winning will be very impressive. I know he has the right guy with him in Gallagher - in terms of the technical side, conditioning, fine points and having the lad's best interests at heart.

Murray's People are basically Murray and Gallagher.

You are wrong there - promoter Hennessy has a big say in what goes on and the matchmaker is John Ingle I believe.

John Ingle who has ties with Jon Thaxton, whose career has been given the push some would say @ Murray's expense.

When you think that lightweight is really the shit hot division for money fights - what with Khan closing in on a WBO title shot, with - as you have noted - the race to court Franie Gavin starting. Lots of blown up super feathers - Casa, Marquez, Pac, Campbell - massive scalps who will get caught up by age/ring wars/lack of size sooner or later, on the international scene. GBP and Planet Hollywood interested in British fighters, potential super feathers like Mitchell and - maybe, eventually, I say as he's got a Commonwealth title fight at featherweight - Truscott. Light welter only five lbs up with potential Brit superfight material due to Hatton and Witter holding world championship distinction and a growing talent pool with the likes of Lynes as EBU 140 champ and Pursy showing promise...

Who is the fighter with potential to fit into that scene...Thaxton - who has to keep coming back like Freddy Kruger just to win a British title, and now has all that scar tissue - or the young, well schooled Murray? Who has been given the push in this lucrative area and who hasn't, is a big issue.

I didnt know Murray was so avoided. But he obviously has had motivational problems - e.g dismantling Billy Smith with ease first time around and then struggling second time. Fewkes may bring the best out of Murray.

I am really hoping I have got John Fewkes wrong - its just I cannot for the life of me see him beating John Murray.

In the case of Murray whilst its wrong of me I want to see him beaten - mainly because of his trainer - I have strong opinions about Gallagher - cannot stand the man and cannot stand the way he has so called managed/trained/advised Murray since he left Steve Wood.

Murray's career as far as I am concerned has dipped since he left Wood - up until then I thought he was coming along very nicely indeed - he was kept active and at times and that was the right times he was matched toughly - since in my opinion there has been periods as far as I am concerned inactivity mixed in with lack lustre performances - but with that said the lad is one hell of a talented boxer.

So many people keep on telling me I am wrong to have the opinion about John Fewkes - I just can't see him beyond the domestic scene - I would love to be wrong - to me he is an on top fighter and when he has to box defensively I personally see some flaws - Murray has had to box defensively on a number of occasions and I think this will stand him in good stead.

I hope I am wrong - I would love to see Gallagher p*ssed off because his boxer has lost - unfortunately I think I will have to wait another day as I see John Murray wearing down Fewkey and beating him by a later stoppage.
