Ottke's final fight!

Post by stujones »

Looks like its against former WBO Middleweight champion Armand Krajnc, on March the 27th.

Can't see the upset occuring here, Krajnc, although competent, has been in steady decline since his good showing in defeat over Harry Simon.

Let hope Ottke sticks to his word.

Didn't Krajnc retire? I thought he had a blood clot on his brain removed after one of his losses

He was certiainly hospitalized with some kind of brain injury.

I guess Ottke is keeping the risk taking to a minimum now.

No, he was given the all-clear to continue and has won a couple of comeback fights.

I think I may throw a party to celebrate Ottke leaving the sport.
Then, at least, Yanks who have never seen him fight can't proclaim him the best at the weight and a member of boxing's elite.

How long before Germany produces another long reigning, sleep inducing champ?
Remember Henry Maske?

Ottke may suck as far as being a beltholder at this point, but Krajnc is certainly no worse (and less hard to pronounce, believe it or not) than that last bloke Calzaghe fought.

Krancj had some sort of brain abnormality, which he had had apparently since before the fight with Tatevosyan, and which may have contributed to his loss.

He has been totally cleared to fight since then, and has some decent wins.

However, unless he shoots Ottke dead, Ottke will be retiring as champion.

Please - this is the frickin' WBO we're talking about here. When's the last time one of K.P. Kohl's WBO titlists faced a mandatory? Vlad Klitschko never did while he had the WBO heavy title, and is only fighting Lamon Brewster now because it provides him with a chickenshit way to get the title back, while letting big brother deal with the nasty bully Sanders. As far as I can tell, if you're a WBO belt holder, the only reason you ever actually fight a mandatory is because your promoter is unwilling or unable to make a fight with an actual live body who's not willing to sign away his soul to said promoter should he actually have the temerity to win.

So first Calzaghe says there are no challenges left for him at 168 (when in fact there are at least a half-dozen top-20 guys he could've tried to make a fight with), and then hides behind a bogus manadatory for his supposed last fight at 168. It's sad, because the guy's got real talent, but I fear by the time we ever see him in the ring with a real world-class guy his career will be all but over.
