Calzaghe v Glencoffe?

Post by bigynzing »

If this fight is to happen, what do you guy`s reckon the outcome will be?

I reckon it will be Joe on points....maybe even a late KO...i can still see Johnson cousing Calzaghe some problems but Glencoffe was looking fucked in the last 3-4 rounds of both his fights against Woods.

So im working on the theory that Calzaghe is faster and hits just as hard as Woods....and has better skills....but like i said, theory.

It depends on how Joe takes the punches of Johnson - remeber Woods has got a great chin and strength (ask huge punching Ashley and Klemensten) but was definately outstrengthed by Johnson.

However, I'll maintain (and I'm the only one) when I say that I thought there was some definate signals of decline in Johnson. I think his tough life is starting to catch up with him.

First time he faught at a frantic pace and nearly payed the price in the last two rounds, the last time he faught at a medicore early pace but still need two rounds of almost completely stopping before picking it up. The 2nd time, Woods could have and should have faught alot better.

If you look at the pace of both fights, Johnson fought at a far harder pace than any of Calzaghe's prior opponents that I can think of off the top of my head, I'd love to see the punch stats.

Johnson was all-action, and like a good old pro he took rests in some portions of the later rounds.

I think Calzaghe is going to have his hands full, and if he manages to stop Johnson I will be very surprised. Whether he can take Johnson's shots is another matter too.

Johnson has fast hands as well, and is a very good inside fighter.

This is going to be a hell of a fight in my opinion.

The more I think about this the more I see Calzaghe using quick feet and a darting jab, trying not to get too involved. I believe he has improved enough in this area over the last couple of years to win clearly.

But if I'm wrong and he wants to lock horns from round one it could be one heck of a struggle, maybe too much so.

Yes, I wonder whether that's Why Calzaghe boxed that Mger fellow, perhaps he was getting some practice in.

I think going head on with Johnson would be suicidal, he has a rock solid chin, bangs hard enough to really hurt Woods, who has a cast iron chin, and won't hang back at all once he has Calzaghe hurt.

Boxers have always given Glen trouble, but is Calzaghe a good and natural enough pure boxer?

Do you think Joe putting on the extra few pounds will make any difference to him?.
If Joe has any sense he will try to jab for the first half of the fight..then use his blistering speed of combo`s over the last half. Johnson looked good against Woods in the second fight...but im not sure if it was him or Woods being not at the races.
Remember Woods floored Johnson late on in the fist encounter...even though it wast official.

The problem I can see with Johnson is this failure to last the 36 minutes well. Joe showed that apart from the very last round that he can fight at a frentic pace throughout the contest (look at the Brewer fight - but, he was spent by the end). However, Johnson seem to be able to do it for 30 minutes (or less) - and when he's tired everything seems to go with him. I can't see Joe letting go quite like Woods did.

Joe has an excellent chin, good enough to stand up to anything the limited Johnson has to offer.
And when he sets himself, he can hit too. Knocked over the rock chinned Eubank for instance.
Joe to win on points, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see him stop the older man either.

But against a stronger guy who's also very busy Calzaghe could tire quicker himself.

Surely if JC is as good as he keeps telling us he is, he shouldnt have too much trouble I mean good solid hard pro Glencoffe but hardly up there with the elite is he?
At present I reserve judgement, I havent believed a word team calzaghe have said for 2 years.

I like this match up and it all depends on the fight Joe decides to box. I was very impressed with his jab against Mger and if he decides to box and use his fast hands, he should win quite well. Johnson will be forced on the front foot (not that he needs any forcing) and will be picked off. He isn't the quickest and a declining Woods is no Joe.

If Joe decides to stay in there, things could get very interesting!

Johnson may well stop Calzaghe.

When you look back at the Mitchell fight.

Mitchell brought Calzaghe's hands down with body punches before decking him.

Johnson is an excellent body puncher and is stronger and has a better chin than Mitchell.

I feel that Clazaghe is vulnerable to the body and I reckon Johnson and his people will have spotted this.

Johnson by mid to late round stoppage.

True. There seems to be a general feeling that Calzaghe only has to show up to win this fight. But Glencoffe Johnson has never given anyone an easy night - and he's fought far better men than Calzaghe.
I would actually like to see Joe get in a 10-rounder at the new weight first (as others have mentioned), but Sky-TV don't seem to believe in good old-fashioned 10-rounders as main events.

Ive not seen anything from Calzaghe to suggest that he is up there with the elite, either.

Johnson is far better than his record suggests, he has been robbed many times, and taken lots of short notice fights.

Most people seem to be totally discounting the fact that Calzaghe is moving up to the weight for the first time.

I do not find it impossible to see Johnson winning by decision or even stoppage.

Johnson blocks shots well, and i don't think Calzaghe will be landing at will on Johnson. IT's going to be a corker.

Fancy Calzaghe myself, I don't think Johnson was anything special against a shop worn looking Woods.

Calzaghe UD for me.

I'm with you there! Everyone talks how good this guy is but based on those Woods fights I'm not convinced.

Johnson's just another good functional boxer but elite he sure ain't.

Well, let's just hope this happens, it's an intriguing fight, it's worrying that it's gone so quiet...

calzaghe should have too much for johnson  obviously the step up in weight should make it more interesting but i still strongly fancy calzaghe to win and probably by late stoppage.

yeah i noticed its gone a bit quiet on this fight perhaps the rumours r true and johnson is fighting roy jones. :D

I agree.

What about Clinton Woods?.If Joe wins, it sets up the Johnson fight perfectly. And if Woods wins...great chance to get himself back in the picture.

But i imagine bullshit politics will get in the way.

yeah I agree, Ive been in some pretty heated rows with various mates who watch a couple of JC' s fights and think he is up there in the P4P list.

Which to me is just a joke.

Good champ undoutedly but has been fighting ottke cast offs and usually after several postponements, to me he has done nothing to even be mentioned anywwhere near the top ten, best super middle definitely but not worthy of a p4p discusion.

I think Jonhson will be a good test but like I say it wont propel him into the p4p lists for me still, for that he needs to fight tarver then we can talk top ten.

That still at least 3 fights away mind and he has to win them all convincingly.

Fair asessement?

Yeah, I'd say so.

Whilst Joe's talents may outstrip his achievements, you cannot make someone a top 10 pfp unless they prove it in the ring.

Joe hasn't beaten anyone who comes close to being the sort of opponent you need to beat since he decisioned Eubank, and Eubank, though still dangerous was there on short notice, and past his peak.

I do believe that Joe is a very naturally talented fighter, however I would have been happier to see him really show that talent at super middleweight. I could of course be wrong, but I don't fancy his chances against the likes of a huge light heavy like Tarver, who had (an admittedly weight drained) Jones in trouble.

I think Calzaghe will have his hands full with even Johnson, if he manages to do a number on Johnson, then people will have to take notice.

At the end of the day for me its an intriguing fight but will not go anyway to proving Joes real potential.

Johnson is nothing special at all and lets be honest all he did was beat Woods which is no big deal at all....

Woods is a very limited fighter and nothing more.

Thanks guys, sometimes when you are arguing with the occasional boxing fan you do wonder, but not for that long haha

along my line sof thinking thoi think Glencoffe is a fair challenge for Joe moving up in weight and taking on a decent if unspectacular champ.
