Im not saying this is the case, because u obviously know more about the rules than I do. J'Leon was out of boxing do to a car accident that caused fractured vertebrae in his neck. He had to take months off from training and gained some weight. He only had a few weeks of training before the Detroit GG and couldn't make the 165 class in that short period of time. Agustama is full of caca. He has participated in several nationals in the pastl Golden Gloves likes to "open" the non-Olympic tournament years to non-citizens. Considering it is a ranking tournament and champions could get picked for international competitions, I don't think it's fair to include non-citizens - period. Then it should be taken out of the ranking equations. USA Boxing looks at all the ranking tournaments and chooses boxers to participate in international competitions. For instance, if a boxer wins the Golden Gloves and gets 100 points and ends up #2 or #3 on the rankings, that means he could be asked to go to a dual meet or any other international event. I will again say, and go on record, that I don't think it's fair to the U.S. citizens who follow the rules. I also find it strange that this is the first year Azea has competed since there have plenty of other national GG tournaments not leading to the Olympics "or international competition" since he's been boxing.This is not a qualifying year so the NGG allows non-resident boxers. Mel - it is not violating any rules. If you saw the turnout for prelimary bouts, you would understand that the GG is doing something right. This tournament is going to be amazing on Friday and Saturday with a sellout crowd.

This post is to let everyone know that amateur boxing isn't "fixed". If there ever was a time when bouts could have been predetermined to get the championship bout that everyone was talking about it was at the NGG. My son Jordan Shimmell versus Jeremiah Graziano. It was being talked about as Tyson vs. Ali. However, it didn't materialize. Jordan was boxing in his hometown with huge crowd support. He boxed a tough semi-final bout that we really thought he won. It was a 3-2 split that went the other way. Many fans left after the bout and didn't return for the finals. It cost the tournament money, but it was clear that they weren't favoring the hometown boxer. In the other sem-final Graziano lost a close bout to Paul Koon by 3-2 decision. If the fights were fixed, those two splits would have been reversed.
I think there are going to be a whole bunch of guys going pro now that the NGG are over. I know many of the 201# boxers were saying they would be going pro. My son plans on staying amateur for at least another year. He really wants to win the NGG and has come so close two out of the three times he has gone.
