Sad news: Eamonn Magee will never box again

WBU welterweight champion Eamonn Magee’s coach John Breen has confirmed that his fighter will not box again because of injuries sustained in a gang attack on Sunday.
The 32-year-old was dragged from his car and beaten by men wielding baseball bats. He has already had surgery on a compound fracture of his leg sustained in the beating, and a second operation to help ease breathing difficulties. Magee is now scheduled to have further operations on his leg injuries and his surgeon has ruled out him getting back into the ring.
Breen told the Belfast Telegraph: "Just last night he was talking about fighting on and making a defence of his world title and now this morning it looks like it is all over for him.
"I feel so sorry for him and I just can't take it in. It's hard to believe that he was being set up for some big fights and now they'll never happen for him.
"I don't think we ever saw the very best of Eamonn Magee and now we never will see the best of him in the ring.
"He's a world class fighter, who fears nobody and he could give anyone in the world a fight.
"It's such a sickening way for his career to end. He's one of the best fighters we have had in last decade."

thats very sad I hope Eamon has enough put aside to enjoy his retirment form the ring and wish him nothing but a speedy recovery. Poor bloke must be devastated.

This is sad news, however I myself believe it is way to early in Magee's rehabilitation to state he'll never fight again. I don't mean to sound rude or disrespectful, but I think Vinny Pazienza's injuries seemed far more career threatening than the reports I have read about Eamomn.

I'm not going to write him off yet, perhaps he's got a fair few quid stashed away and he can afford to retire - but I'm not convinced that he CAN'T come back.

Well done to Ian and Martin at Britishboxing.net for covering the action with such speed and dignity. It was a sick act, while I'm still not writing him off it will undoubtely be a long road to recovery (whether he will return or not).

Thanks Stu. I too thought it was a bit soon to be calling the whole thing off. But it could be that the injuries are so bad that there is simply no chance at all. If he was 22, not 32...

Still there's a faint glimmer of hope for Eammon I suppose.
Just think of Vinny Paz: told he was never going to walk again by the docs, let alone box, but proved them all wrong in the end.

One who there isn't hope for though is Tybius Flowers who was gunned down in Philadelphia. Below is Rick Scharmberg of fightnews...

Philadelphia welterweight Tybius Flowers was gunned down Tuesday night as he sat in his car on a Philadelphia street. Although the shooting took place in a known drug area, it is possible that it was related to an investigation that Flowers was cooperating with. A Philadelphia district attorney who knew Flowers commented, "He was a decent fellow and his two children can be proud. He was stepping up and doing the right thing by helping me out with another murder I am working on. I'm not sure if his murder was related. Right now we have nothing." Flowers leaves a final ring record of 17-6, with 10 KOs. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
