Berbick-Thomas
Berbick-Thomas
Does anyone remember this fight between the two heavies?... it set up the Tyson Berbick clash... I have never seen the fight any memories?
jont - well, my friend, you're not missing much by never having seen it, that's for sure. It wasn't the dullest fight in the history of the devision, but neither was it particularly memorable either. It was just a pedestrian affair that was there for the taking because Thomas simply didn't show up to fight.
Judging by the pre-fight footage shown before the bout on HBO at the time, apparently ol' Pinklon was far more interested in trying to hawk tapes & CDs of his fledgling music career than he was in fighting Berbick & it showed in his performance. Thomas was as flat as a pancake & Berbick just outworked him over the course of the contest in yet another of those dull, WBC - WBA heavyweight title trades that were so much in vogue back then. It was like some high stakes game of hot potato that the heavies of the day played until Tyson came along & cleaned things up for a bit.

This was a good fight, Thomas was outmuscled when the scary, aggressive and bullish Berbick unexpectadly showed up.
Berbick landed some combinations on Thomas's head thjat sent spray flying & were dramatic. Thomas's jab was great but otherwise, like Page, Tate, Ali etc just was not ready for Berbick.

Re: Berbick-Thomas
...typical of the wba title in the 80's
while holmes reigned supreme the rest fought out a combination of wildly exciting/highly dull/ and controversial fights for the tainted title
Weaver came from behind to stop tate in the last
Then the weaver dokes 60 second fiasco..followed by their torrid 15 round draw !!!!
coetzee claimed and then there was the controversy in the page fight (a gr8 fight btw)
and basically this was the golden era of Kings fat Hws throwing titles away .....tubbs...witherspoon...page....and of course Pinklon thomas who was definatly considered a talented chap with the best jab in the business
