Joe Grim-Record
re
Luckett Davis compiled the best record, and most accurate that I have seen for Grim, which has 179 total bouts, but there are many bouts that have yet to be uncovered, so his total probably is over 200, or 300 bouts. That record appeared in an earlier IBRO Journal. That record includes many ND decisions, with a total of 40 wins, with 15 knockouts. I've read newspaper accounts of several of his bouts, and he is certainly an entertaining fighter to research. Grim was probably decked more times than any fighter in history, but he usually got back up to take more punishment. He fought the very best of several weight classes.
Article in The Ring
The Ring did an article on Joe Grim about 10 years ago, I can't remember the details, but I remember that he had an inhuman ability to absorb punishment and no-one could knock him out, although I think Gunboat Smith eventually managed it.
The article was fascinating, you might want to try and track it down.

Grim was stopped four times. Sailor Burke was the first to turn the trick in 1906 in three rounds, and then Australian Heavyweight Champion Mike Williams in 1908 in ten rounds (I think Williams was Australian hvywt champ, that or New Zealand hvywt champ), Sam McVea in 1910 in twelve rounds and finally Jack Fitzgerald, a popular Philly middleweight in 1910 in four rounds. I have newspaper accounts of the Fitzgerald, McVea bouts as well as a good number of his other bouts. His career is very interesting and he was probablly knocked down a zillion times in bouts, I think Fitzsimmons may have been the one who sent Grim to the canvas the most times in one bout, but I don't recall the number...something like twenty, or thirty times. Luther McCarty supposedly KO'd Grim also, but I believe that it was a different fighter than the orginal "Iron Man."
