What happened to heavyweight Isiah Thomas?
A Cadet World Champ in 2005 and praised by Manny Steward as almost a predestinated superstar in the heavyweight division. He took the step up to the senior level at the last years Golden Gloves, where he went to the semifinal and lost a very close bout to Deontay Wilder, but I havent heard a thing about him since.
So what happened to Isiah Thomas?

No, Isiah did have talent so Manny was not wrong with saying positive things about him. I was hoping to have my son box Isiah at an open-class tournament, but Isiah only entered the one GG and that was about it. Good competition is the way you get better so we take tough bouts like that one. The Kronk amateur team has kind of fallen apart. Most of their open class boxers will be turning pro this year and then they will be left with just a bunch of junior boxers.Puncher7 wrote:manny steward jumps on a lot of prospect's high horse... then they end up losing or something take andy lee for example

I heard that...
Isiah Thomas is working as sparring partner into Wladimir Klitschko's team.
Re: I heard that...
If he is "working" as a sparring partner, then his amateur days are done. He would have been an OK sparring partner to emulate Ibragimov. He is not going to be a good one for the Peter fight.Venceremos wrote:Isiah Thomas is working as sparring partner into Wladimir Klitschko's team.

I guess having a young southpaw might be helpful. I think sparring with Antonio Tarver would be great, but I doubt he would be willing. Although Sugar Shane helped out Oscar.Povetkin wrote:Wlad fights southpaw Tony Thompson.Dennis wrote:If he is "working" as a sparring partner, then his amateur days are done. Apparently he turned pro Saturday night:
Former amateur star Isiah Thomas scored a devastating knockout over Tyrone Dicks in what were both men’s pro debuts. After falling to the canvass, Dicks laid motionless for about 10 minutes while the physicians attended to him. Though he responded well to the doctors, he was taken out on a stretcher and sent to the hospital as a precaution (souce f---news)

I don't think Isiah was 6'4" at 17. He was more like 6'2". I don't think he got much taller either. I would guess that maybe he is 6'3" now. I don't know his birth date, but you are correct that he was born in '89 as he was a few months younger than my son Jordan.
Re: What happened to heavyweight Isiah Thomas?
I'm glad that he got back into the ring and is not wasting his talent.
Re: What happened to heavyweight Isiah Thomas?
Probably. I know that a lot of coaches hope their boxers grow enough to be able to compete in the heavyweight division. Just think about how much better Holyfield would have done against Lewis if he was 6'5" instead of 6'2.5". Tyson probably would have been more competitive if he had been 6'5" instead of 5'10" or so. You can't teach height. My son Jordan seems to have topped out at 6'3". If he was going to box pro in the heavy division, it would have been nicer if he had grown another 3 inches. However, you just adjust your style to your god given size (oops I should say height as we know some guys have improved their "size" with drugs).verballistic wrote:so was it the old "inflated height" syndrome they sometimes do with athletes?!?Dennis wrote:I don't think Isiah was 6'4" at 17. Ron - were you at the show? How did Isiah, Dominique, James, and Purnell look?

This is off topic:
That photo of Leo Nolan's bout made me think about a complaint people have of the HW division. That they are fat and not in shape. Leo has a small amount of fat, but is not hugely overweight. The people that make these statements, they talk about how all of the good potential HW are playing on the football field. However, have you ever seen linemen. These guys have way more fat than the vast majority of HW boxers. The NFL coaches want their linemen to have enough weight so they don't get pushed around and they have enough mass to push the other guys. In some ways the same is true in HW boxing. I tend to prefer HW's that have less and can move faster.
