More on the Main Street Gym
By Randy De La O

I ran across the first two photos of the Main Street Gym, in Downtown Los Angeles while searching trough the web. The first photo is the same photo used in an article from the Los Angeles Times that I posted on the message board a while back. It's a great shot of the front of the gym, in all it's humility. It was ratty and seedy and yet beautiful. The second photo shows the inside of the gym on what appears to be a slow day. The third and fourth photos are of the original Main Street Gym (Newsboy Gym) that burned down in 1951. It was located across from the "Newer" gym, where the old Johnnie's Shrimp Boat used to stand.
Image
The gym was located on the second floor. You walked up a flight of stairs and past Howie Steindler's office to get to the gym. As you entered the stairwell you would here the sounds of the speed bags, the heavy bags being hit, the ropes hitting the floor and the sounds of the fighters sparring. I can still hear it. I bought a pair of Ortiz boxing gloves in the luggage store. It didn't advertise but it sold boxing gear. I also got my haircut at the barber shop on a regular basis. The entrance to the parking lot is to the left, They must have removed all the bums from the sidewalk before they took this shot.

I sparred in both of these rings and they were rarely, if ever, empty. The ring on the right is the ring that Monroe Brooks and I are sparring in, in "Rocky". I'll never understand why "the powers that be" in Los Angeles' boxing world did not rally to save the gym. It was and is an irreplaceable part of L.A's boxing history. It stands with both Gleason's and Stillman's as boxing's historic and iconic gyms.

The above photo of the original Main Street Gym / Newsboy Gym was posted by Frank Baltazar Sr.

The above photo shows fighter Tony Chavez at the original gym.

I know in the past he has said Tiger was said to be a "quiet guy". Both boxers enjoyed a kind of "celebrity" status within the factory, which was called English Electric by the way. Tiger worked in the paint shop, not sure all those fumes would have been good for him. I worked at the factory for a few years myself in the 1980's and one of the security guards who loved his boxing remembered Bassey as "quite a cheerful chap". I will ask my dad if he remembers them though.
It's remarkable that two legendary-to-be African fighters slogged away in a Liverpool factory - for English Electric, to boot. My neighbour works for them right now. My brother also worked for them. Such a small world. Tiger was probably back at work the morning after he floored, busted up and stopped Terry Downes in London. Remarkable, absolutely remarkable.
Hi Bennie. Sorry for not getting back sooner. I asked my dad about Tiger and he never actually met him, he just knew he worked there. I say worked there my dad said he heard that English Electric were interested in Tiger's career and gave him a job, that he actually didn't do much work, all heresay of course. When he left English Electric my dad took some old pictures with him and he believes Tiger was on one of the pictures but annoyingly he gave the pictures away!!
The days when boxing was so big, jobs were offered to the local 'name' fighters. I wonder how much work Dick actually did.

Call me heartless, but I wonder how Jerry would have done with George Foreman.
He certainly deserved another shot.

Incidentally, nobody answered my question about Jose Torres. How good was he?

Good enough to become light-heavyweight champion of the world, but that's about it. I don't write that disparagingly, nor do I intend to demean his accomplshment. He certainly won the title in decisive fashion against the reigning champion, but he was never an all-time great.

As a champion, I would put him at a level below - say, John Conteh.

Personally, I don't think Quarry would have defeated Foreman, but I think he would have made things very interesting.

Yes. I always enjoy the beauty of God's creations!

At the same time, however, one has to worry about the lower back problems she'll develop later in life from all that weight she's carrying up front. . .

Bennie have you heard about when Torres fought Charlie "Devil"
Green at Madison Square Garden.
Torres was scheduled to fight somebody else, but the opponnent didnt show.
Matchmaker Teddy Brenner found Green sitting in the audience eating a hotdog and asked him if he would fight Jose.
Green said ok and jumped in with Torres and had him on the deck once or twice in the first round before getting stopped.
When Green got paid after the fight, he wanted an extra 1.50 for the hotdog he didnt get to finish.
