Boxer appearances in films

Post by Kilburn »

I'll start with:

Micky Cantwell as the "vicious little kant" in Snatch.

Steve Collins as a bouncer in Lock Stock

Roy Jones v Bryan Brannon (I think?) in Devils Advocate

Also in Snatch, who was the black bouncer who talks to Bullet Tooth and Franky as they're about to enter the casino? I always think he looks like Andrew Lowe but it probably isn't him.

Scott Welch and Andy Till were also in Snatch I think?

Vitaly Klitschko and Lennox Lewis briefly in Oceans Eleven

that's right

"Your next Joe!..Your next Joe!"

Here's a question though, Was Carl Weathers a pug before he became an actor? If not he must have been some sort of athlete coz he had an awesome physique..

Roy Jones had a decent speaking part in whatever the last Matrix film was. Mickey Cantwell in 'Snatch' as 'Liam' - quality shout! Didn't realise that!

A more profitable route might be which boxers should have starred in films. I'll start with Baby Jake Matlala in 'Little Big Man'!

& Tommy Morrison in Rocky V of course.
One of the biggest ever roles for a boxer in a film?

Billy Schwer was in Mean Machine with Vinnie Jones.
Can't remember if it was a speaking part or not.
Scott Welch was in Snatch. He lost to Brad Pitt in a bare knuckle fight. Knocked out by a poncey film star, just about sums up Scotty. :D

The excellent Randall Tex Cobb in Raising Arizona - plus quite a few others I think, as the guy can actualy act!

Rocky Graziano was a bit of a TV star in the USA for awhile, not sure any films though ( maybe a bit part in "Somebody up there likes me"? Don't know..)

Big punching 1970's featherweight Jimmy Flint has made a bit of a name for himself in a few UK films and theatre.

And Marv Hagler has been in loads of Italian Rambo type films. Not sure how great an actor he is though, I think he mainly runs through jungles shooting a gun and punching a few lights out! :D

I believe Carl Weathers was a good college football player...

Randall Tex Cobb was also in Police Academy.
Mickey Hughes (former commonwealth champ) was in Snatch as Brad Pitts best mate.
Scott Dixon did a lot of the boxing scenes as a body double for Pitt.

Michael Caine film "shiner" had Derrick Harmon in along with a number of East end fight faces.... Terry Spinks etc

Yeah Cobb was also in Blind Fury, Midnight Sting and played a wrestler in a later episode of The X-Files (looked in good shape to)

My brother told me that Joe Bugner was in Streetfighter. :o
Looked it up and it's true. Unbelievable.
Check out the cast list for 'Play it to the bone'.
Tyson
Foreman
Manfredy
Tucker
Plus loads more. All small guest appearances by the look of the credits though.

I've seen Alexis Arguello in a couple of obscure movies. Several boxers were in 'On the Waterfront' (Abe Simon, Tami Mauriello, etc). Mark Breland had a good part in 'Lords of Discipline'.

Yes, in the second Rocky movie in a sparring scene. You could see Duran trying not to make Stallone look too bad in the ring.

Cobb was also in Ace Ventura - Pet Detective at the beginning....and in this film with Gene Hackman and Patrick Swayze where they go back to Vietnam - 'Uncommon Valor'.

I remember him in some bit part in a film where Chevy Chase is locked in a cell, and Cobb's there as a big butch guy with make up on...Fletch Lives I think.

I think Bobby Frakham was in Snatch too?

Also Alex Garcia and Rocky Pepeli are in Diggstown with James Woods and Louis Gossett JNR.

For DOG - both Vital and Wladimir Klitschko were in Oceans Eleven, but it was actually Wladimir in the ring with Lennox.

Iran Barkley in Homeboy with Mickey Rourke.

Good call. I was trying to remember the name of that film, its a military drama if its the one I am thinking of? Breland wanted to establish himself in cinema after his boxing career. I don't think he ever succeeded though.

I'd forgoten that was him. The scene goes something like this I think:

Cobb looks at the new inmate and tells him: "Bend over!"

Chase holds out his hand and replies: "Hey! Nice to meet you Ben!" :D

Carlos Palomino (inducted into the Hall of Fame this June) has been in a lot of Hollywood movies, though never in big roles. Rab Affleck, a Scottish puncher of the 70's who challenged for the British light-heavyweight title, was in a movie with Billy Connolly and Liam Neeson. He was excellent as a bareknuckle fighter.

Lewis and Vlad/Vitali were in "Oceans 11" pretending to fight each other.

If anyone’s seen it I can’t believe that they spend so many $$$$ on the cast, getting the boxers in and then the ring entrances and the way they boxed was absolutely shit. Lewis just chucked a few slow telegraphed punches that look liked they hadn’t rehearsed at all.

No jokes about Lewis please :)
