Arthur becomes WBO champion!

Congratulations AAA, you have truly proved yourself a worthy world champ and earned your title the hard way. In the ranks of all time greats you are now above Sam Langford, Charles Burley and the like...
I wonder if he is really struggling to make weight he might have to go up to lightweight? Would he be the only world champion to have never won or defended a belt?
Oh well I look forward to Arthur v Mitchell, a very euro level matchup (no shame in that) dressed up nicely as a world title fight.

ARTHUR CROWNED KING!
Alex Arthur has been declared the full WBO World Super-Featherweight champion after Joan Guzman vacated the belt and moved up to the lightweight division.
The Scotsman was due to face Guzman on May 3 in Edinburgh, but the fight was delayed when the Dominican Republican pulled out because his management applied too late for a Visa.
Arthur, 29, was waiting for the fight to be rescheduled - but had his "interim" world champion status upgraded by the WBO when Guzman decided to campaign at 135 pounds.
" I'm delighted with the decision by the WBO to give me full world champion status but I felt that I won the title when I beat Koba Gogoladze last July," said Arthur.
" I'm confident that I would have beaten Guzman had the fight been rescheduled but I believe that I am among the elite super-featherweights and want to prove myself as the best out there,"
" But I'm proud to be Edinburgh's first world champion for 30 years, and am looking forward to making the first defence of my title."
" My reign now begins!"
Promoter allegedly added: "Britain has lost a few of its world champions over the last few months but we have got one back with Alex now declared as world champion,"
" I believe he will be a long-term world champion. I'm working hard at the moment to deliver a new date and challenger for Alex."

Does Arthur truly believe he's a WORLD CHAMPION? Jesus, those quotes are beyond belief. Arthur's barely top 10 in the world. He's beaten a few European level fighters and that's it. He nearly lost to Stephen Foster last time out.
It's a shame. Arthur comes across as a decent, level-headed guy pre and post fight. Surely he can't believe that, now with WBO title in hand, he's a world champion.
Said it all along...the WBO title is NOT a world title. Never has been and never will be.

An absolute mockery of the term "world champion". Incidently do they get charged government inheritance tax in this situation?steve689 wrote:Promoter allegedly allegedly added: "Britain has lost a few of its world champions over the last few months but we have got one back with Alex now declared as world champion"

Say it much as you want mate, but it is. Not rated highly, but its still a belt. Good for Arthur I say and good luck to him defending it.Eraserhead wrote:Does Arthur truly believe he's a WORLD CHAMPION? Jesus, those quotes are beyond belief. Arthur's barely top 10 in the world. Sure, by definition. But it's like saying Carlton Palmer was an England international. The WBO is just the same as the WBU, WBF, IBO and all those other Sky Sports belt we had to put up with in recent times. FWarren has way to much of a say in that organisation for my liking and it's too 'in house' for any of their world champions to be taken seriously. No organisation is perfect, but the WBO is not on the same level as the WBC/WBA/IBF titles.fist wrote:Say it much as you want mate, but it is. Not rated highly, but its still a belt. Nah mate it might be the lesser of the main belts, but its a league above WBU, WBF and IBO lol. WBO has had some very good modern day boxers - Naseem, DLH, Barerra, Benn, Calzaghe, Eubank, Klitschkos...Eraserhead wrote:Sure, by definition. I reckon he's going to have it for a very long time. I'm certain that Franky Boy knew Guzman was going to vacate and move up - he said as much after Arthur nearly got neat off Foster a few months ago. I can just see Arthur making some poor defenses against average guys like McFields, Benavides and Mukhlis. I mean if I were the WBO I would make Arthur fight either Mitchell, Martinez or Jaurez for the vacant title. I hate fighters being given their world-titles.
Exactly, like Enzo with Nelson's WBO bauble. And they had the cheek to claim parity with Haye because Enzo was also a 'world champ'!!
Arthur reckons he already felt he had won the title when he beat that famous world beating hall of famer Coco Googolodzoid or whatever he was called so fair enough. That's the only recent thing he has done to link in with being handed the belt and proclaimed world crown holder.

The WBO is the sole "second tier" belt - in between the big three and the morass of absolute sh1te.Eraserhead wrote: Sure, by definition. To be fair to Arthur, he's not the first fighter to get a world title this way, he won't be the last, and good luck to him whilst it lasts. Which won't be long, because he is ridiculously tight at the weight, so I suspect we'll see him jobbed to Mitchell and then fed to Khan in his lightweight debut!
