Brrd v Jefferson Heavyweight Debacle

Post-Lewis it looks as though we will be 'treated' to this appauling match up for the IBF strap.

Derrick Jefferson, who narrowly squeezed by Audley victim Julius Long on a technical decision, could be next in line for Byrd's so far inglorious reign.

This is a disgraceful pairing and sullies the image of championship heavyweight boxing. Byrd should be forced into proper fights rather then these bank account padding outings.

If this fight comes off, shame on the IBF.

No other fornicator will fight Byrd, so why not?

I think a rematch with Oquendo should happen, just so Byrd can prove he's the better man,

You beat me to it....

Nobody wants to fight Byrd, because he is so hard to look good against.

However, I don't think Byrd is really one of the top heavy's any more, his effort against Oquendo was awful, and I think he's past his peak now.

This just shows how much the scene misses Lewis.

Byrd may be unfashionable and hard to look good against, but this is for a portion of the 'heavyweight crown'. Jefferson has done NOTHING to warrant a shot.

Oquendo in a re-match would make more sense as has been stated, though Fres will probably look towards Ruiz for an all-Puerto Rican show down.

Sprott has as good credentials as Jefferson, he could try looking to fight one of these 'soft' champs...

Agreed, this is a rediculous match up - It shouldn't even be sanctioned. Jefferson was never that good, and percieved to be shot after Wlad anhialated him.

Byrd: chairman of the who needs him club....except now he was a title ( of sorts ). Jefferson has a soft chin, but the light punching Byrd will probably make him look like Jake LaMotta.

That would explain why someone like Lewis wouldn't have wanted fight Byrd, but what does some guy for whom this would his one (and quite possibly only) title shot care about whether he looks fabulous or not? I'm having a really hard time believing that King and Byrd asked everybody in the top 50 whether they wouldn't please, please, please take a title shot vs. Byrd, and every single one of them turned it down, so they had no choice but to troll through numbers 51-100 looking for someone foolhardy enough to take on the mighty FeatherFisted one.

Re. the apparently-never-offered rematch with Oquendo, this reasoning is even more suspect, because if Fres were at all worried about "looking bad," why in God's name would he take a title shot against John Ruiz?

I wish people would quit making excuses for Byrd - since "winning" the IBF strap 15 months ago against a guy blown-up middleweight James Toney beat much more impressively, he's fought exactly once, a fight in which he looked like crap against at best a fringe contender.

Talk of Byrd-Jefferson is moot, because according to Fightnews, Byrd will in fact be facing Foul Pole Andrew Golota on April 17, on a big Don King PPV card which will also feature Ruiz-Oquendo and Mayorga-Rivera.

Golota is a nutcase, but is actually an intriguing and possibly dangerous opponent for the Byrdman. If this is true, I take back some of my harsh criticism based on the names of various not-even-in-the-top-50 guys who'd been mentioned as opponents for Byrd's next defense.

Seriously, wtf did Golota do to even deserve a title shot? And what is Byrd thinking accepting the fight? He must not feel very attached to his nuts.

Hey, at least he's ranked in the top 50, which is more than you can say for Nobles and Jefferson, the other 2 names we'd been hearing before Golota was confirmed as Byrd's next opponent. Golota has done at least as much as Oquendo did at the time Fres got his shot at Byrd.

I guess the main reason why other names have not been found is that they already have upcoming fights.

Golota is about the only one left (unless you want Tyson in there!)

At least hide would go forward and try to win.

i wish byrd would fight the klitschko/sanders winner, or at least Ruiz, and unify the titles.but the question is, who the hell would deserve an undisputed title shot.

Byrd should just give up his title for being a slap boxer and not a true heavy weight champion.
