Ambling Alp,

Just want to take the time to thank you for keeping up with the boxrec HOF and it is fun. It brings debates and people learn about fighters that they don’t know much about. I realize now that I didn’t vote for John L. Sullivan but next time I definitely will.

Borinken-I also believe that Sullivan should make it and have been voting for him since the 3rd ballot. He has a good chance at making it next time. Thanks for posting that about Sullivan.

I'd like to know the difference between fame and popularity. What exactly is the criteria for induction?

Also, I never did find where the poll was so i couldn't vote -- call me a Luddite.

So no, it's not meant to be a popularity contest or about who is the most famous.

A close look at who has made it indicates that people are voting for who they think who was the best fighters. For example, Dulio Loi is virtually unknown to casual fans but he has been elected. So has Packey McFarland and Abe Attell. Fighters that are much more well known such as Floyd Patterson,Aaron Pryor, and Rocky Graziano haven't made it.

i won't comment on the voting....except...my name is not listed as one of the voters, but i did vote....one for joey maxim and one for freddie miller. i see that miller got one vote, but that must have been by somebody else. maxim doesn't appear at all.

…One other observation would be that the front page news you talk about may have been something more relevant to the USA and there are people voting from many countries. He may not have the same relevance abroad as he does for our American cousins…

John L’s fame did extend across the ocean as he was quite a celebrity in England and parts of Europe as well. Anyone new to this forum who did know anything about boxing would probably be quite surprised to see a HOF list with 69 names and no John L, but I guess as Alp noted it’s merely for fun. Of course it’s also quite embarrassing for anyone who’s a regular poster on this forum.

All I can say is that we all have different criteria...

I've just been listing great fighters who I think have achieved greatness in the ring. I never realised I was supposed to be voting for anything else. I haven't for a moment considered popularity, service to the sport and/or celebrity. Other people may want to vote taking these things into consideration and then at the end of it all we'll end up with a mix of criteria that has some validity.

While I am a little embarrassed that Sullivan didn't get in, what's a Hall of Fame without some controversy. Besides it will only make it that much sweeter when he finally gets in next year!
