Worst Ever World Champion?

Post by DG. »

Gie the name and reason!

I say Carlos Maussa!

NO skill - you would think he had never boxed in his life.

Yes, he can punch, but that is about it.

Beat Terry Norris twice by DQ. Should never have gotten a shot in the first place.

Actually, just had a look at his record and think I'm being a bit unfair. He had a string of seven losses in eight just before the Norris shot, but the quality of opposition was terrific; Paz, Crisato Espana, Simon Brown, Glenwood Brown, Aaron Davis, Vince Pettway.
So I suppose he was in the Freddie Pendelton/ Emmanuel Augustus (maybe even Glen Johnson) situation.

Michael Bentt

Not sure if he counts - but Frans Botha must be worthy of a mention. Although I don't think he is now ever classified as an IBF titlist.

he was announced as a world champ and sky called it world championship boxing.

i still hold a big grudge against roberts for that whole charade. hopefully a ''where are they now'' feature will have him cleaning toilets out or something.

Good shout. 'The Atlantic City Express' was awful.

His capitulation at the feet of Tyson just reinforced his 'paper champion' status in my eyes.

It's not nice to deceive people with fake titles. However, if Roberts used boxing to be a successful person in life it's hard to begrudge that.

It's the Board, the promoters and Sky who are to blame. If a guy can get away with that and make some money, he bloody well will. Stabdards should be there, but they haven't always been.

I suppose with the limited career boxers have - you have to maje the ££s as quickly as possible.

British Title defence £15K
IBO/WBU Title Defence £30K
What would you do?

In years to come, the IBO will be regarded wuite highly due to theor reating systemds.

Plus RJJ - Lennox and others all held the belt with pride for a while.

WBU? Useless!

I agree mate. I like the IBO, they have a decent ratings system, don't strip fighters for fighting non-sensical mandatories (from memory, anyway) and have a very good list of fighters who hold/have held it:

Klit
RJJ
Tarver
Hopkins
Hatton
Darchinyan

I prefer them to the WBO.
