Mel, it is apparent that you have your favorites. I don't remember you ever having anything nice to say about Wilson. Every comment is neutral or in favor of the other boxer, never a compliment or a nice comment
.

Sigh - I shouldn't even respond to this troll. Jane baby - I've known Mike since he was 13. He's one of my favorite athletes. When he was "on" he was awesome, however he has been inconsistent over the years. I was actually hoping he'd make the team because he stuck around and tried again. Actually, most of the boxers are my favorites. I am flattered that you read my posts, however I think you need glasses.

True - but Mike had enough years in amateur boxing to know how to score points
And, by the way, this was NOT a negative. It was a statement that Mike had enough experience that he knew how to score points that counted, as opposed to those with a pro style who do not. Seems to me, JaneWhatever, that YOU chose to be negative. You cudda asked what I meant instead of automatically ass-u-me-ing.

I really don't have any association to Mike personally. I know him through my son and his boxing friends. I have been watching him for years and in my opinion he was done dirty. That is my opinion and that of many others. Life has moved on for him I hear and I wish him well.

And you are definitely entitled to your opinion. I was at the Trials and, personally, I don't think anyone got robbed. Just my opinion.

Jane Doe, I don't believe we have met. I do know Mike personally as he is my son. I have traveled with him to many fights and have met many people but I do not know who you might be. True it was a dissapointment when Mike lost but life goes on. He has no hard feelings. Mike was rooting for Michael Hunter as we all were. He has trained with Michael Hunter since then and they are friends. Mike was very sorry he lost, we all were. We were looking forward to watching the superheavys at the Olympics. As far as Mel goes, she has known Mike for many years and I have never felt the bias you seem to feel. Boxing has been Mikes family and he has many "relatives" out there. We have been very blessed with him in this sport. He has travels extensively and met so many nice people. The sport has given him focus. It is true he has made mistakes but I am so glad he has learned from them. He basically has grown up from the age of 12 with the eyes of many people watching. We don't cast any stones! I know he is a class act, I am very proud of him. So, thanks for looking after him in your own eyes but please don't degrade others with your opinion. We are all entitled to our own opinion but know the truth before you speak. It would be nice if you can identify yourself so we know who we are talking to. I found it offensive that some would believe you were related to Mike and would make those comments. Thanks.

Every comment is neutral or in favor of the other boxer, never a compliment or a nice comment. You have been doing this long enough to know the politics in the game. You know full well what politics. Both losses for Wilson and Hunter by one point come on... Then Bethel and Wilson by one point...please it was clear that someone did not want Wilson and Hunter to fight at the nationals. Hunter was the favored boxer. Wilson made a mistake and he payed dearly with his positive drug test. He made good on his word and learned a lesson. He is overall a class act guy. Playing the fact that Hunter lost his father and his win would make a good human interest story was ridiculous. His father was shot on a roof after he hit a cop. He had spiraled down into the life of a drug addict. That would be someone to look up to huh? I feel bad for Hunter losing his bid for this Olympics but maybe he can stick around another four years and make the next team. Or maybe someone a little more favored will come in and Hunter will lose by one point. We all know loyalty is not a guarantee.

And let's hope this NEVER happens! What a negative event it would be.

And what a great job you've done with him! First time I ever met him was at a Blue & Gold Tournament when the team from Oregon were brought by the Petrojetti's (never could spell that name!). Mike was a JO and a very skilled boxer for his weight. I was truly impressed. And I've had the good luck to be with him at many events over the year. Last time I saw him was in Colorado Springs in March as he was getting ready to go home and have his hand operated on. He gave me his usual huge hug. He's special. And I'll miss having him around. :D

Is your son as well-schooled in negativity as you are? Poor kid. I hope he doesn't box.

Verballistic, maybe if we all ignore it, it will go away. It is a troll and loves to start flame wars. It's probably a 12 year old kid using daddy's computer. Happy Monday!

Hunter, who had been battling an illness throughout his time in Guatemala, fell behind by one point after the opening two minutes before the Venezuelan extended his lead to a 5-2 margin after two rounds of boxing. Payares moved out to a four-point advantage in the third before winning a 10-3 decision over Hunter.

that's terrible news!! :(

this kid would have been a fan favorite at beijing & with his dad's untimely death you really gotta feel bad for michael...hope he rebounds and goes onto greatness, since at age 19 he DOES have time on his side!! :box:
I agree with that.

Poor Hunter really had some bad luck during the qualifications.

In WC (the 1st qualifier) everyone who reached the semi got a ticket, Hunter ran into the best super heavy in the world Timurziev in the quarterfinal and lost a rather close bout.

In the 2nd qualifier only the winner got a ticket and Hunter reached the final and lost to cuban Robert Alfonso. Alfonso would probably have been qualified already if Cuba hadn't boycotted the WC.

In the 3rd qualifier Hunter got ill and a tough draw. He beat Bence, but lost to Payares in the last hurdle between him and Beijing. The Colombian Oscar Rivas took the other ticket here and he was outclassed by Hunter in the 2nd qualifier.

I hope that he will recover after this cause I really think that he's one of the most talented american heavyweights out there.

It is a shame because he could have won a medal with the right draw.

Absolutely!
He really held his own against Timurziev in WC 2007 and Timurziev is the best superheavyweight in the world in my book.

Losing to Cuban Alfonso is not a shame either, cause I heard that Alfonso is a better superheavy that his precursors Lopez and Rubalcaba.

I also read somewhere that Hunter was so sick in Guetamala that he would never had competed if it wasn't his last chance to qualify.

thanks for the tip...but do you really think mike wilson has kids that old?!?
Huh?????? I was guessing that JaneDoe is a 12 year old playing with his folks computer - while they are out of the house, of course.
look at the bright side...the kid has heart & he gives us all someone to pull for in 2012!! :TU:
I heard that he was planning to turn pro if he didn't qualify and I actually think he should. He at least became the number one in USA and four years is a long time to wait for the next train. His "unluck" in the qualifications also showed that nothing is certain.

Since there is no official announcement, a request was made to not post/speculate about rumors. The request has been honored.

Nothing new. SOS. He's probably still in Colorado Springs and I can't imagine him not calling and talking to his mom. Too bad it appears the personal coaches have been cut out - but that's kind of normal.

seems like if michael was going PRO like the links said that he would be back home in VEGAS, instead of colorado springs...not exactly a hotbed of pro boxing!!
Can't always believe the media, or the coaches, or whomever! Rumors do abound - and rebound.

Lots of mights and maybes and no guarantees. I hope it happens for Mike but, as the article says, his fate won't be known until late July. I'm sure USA Boxing will make a statement when there are facts to report.
