Everett Martin, the last I ever heard of him, retired following his loss to Ruslan Chagaev, who currently is the WBA champion of the world; but I do not believe him to be dead. Martin is one of those fellows who happens to disappear from the scene only to reappear, much like another 'tough guy' boxer Danny Wofford.

Not heard that he was dead either. What a durable shock absorber he was in his younger days though, very difficult to knock over.

He was right til the end. Most of those stoppage losses at the end of his career are actually Martin quitting on his stool with 'eye injuries', 'elbow injuries' etc.

Hardest frickin head ever - and a natural light heavy at that!!

Bowe I think was the only man to ever stop him.

He quit on his stool against Bowe.

If memory serves both Damiani and Bonecrusher did stop him, but on body shots, and even then it was when he had a serious recurring rib injury.

Only time i ever saw him decked by a shot to the head was a thunderous George Foreman uppercut!

How do you imagine a fight between Martin and Tex Cobb would have gone?

A shared beat down with nobody giving in. Not a lot of defense in that mix.

That sounds a bit disrespecful, Buzz. You should know better given the way you are always handing out etiquette tips.

Everett Martin wasn't a fall down guy like, say, Jeff Pegues who is just there to pad a record. He was much more than that. He gave a lot of top fighters some good rounds. Boxing needs guys like Everett Big Foot Martin.

And remember he did beat Tim Witherspoon and Bert Cooper.

Good point, he's no Stacy Goodson. But he did seem to be popular amongst the elite as a "tune up" specialist. Could consider him "gatekeeper" material actually. Was he involved in other sorts of martial arts? Something rolling around in my brain says he was. And yes he would make short work of a smart ass like myself...or perhaps even you. Not that your that smart.

So give me a break I'm just havin' some fun here. But when you're right you're right.

The aptly-titled WBS championship, pitting a 45-year-old guy against a guy with almost a hundred losses.
