Updated with final results from Athens. Only two qualifiers left, and the additional couple of spots to be awarded to some fighters who participated in the World Championships or Qualifiers. Last time they gave the slots to fighters from Iraq and Afghanisan, and sadly they could very well give them the two slots again four years later.
when do they release those??emile wrote:Updated with final results from Athens. There is no conspiracy to Europe having more qualified boxers. They simply have better results than the other continents. In fact they are underrepresented! They win like 60% of the medals, even in the lower divisions. You point out that in the lower weights latin america have better boxers but fact is except for Cuba no latin american have won a medal for quite a while at World Championships or Olympic Games whlie european boxers (Sergey Kazakov, Pal Bedak, Jerome Thomas, Vodpyanov, Selimov, etc) continuosly win medals even gold.
I heard this exact argument a few months ago by Jorge Guzman, President of the Cuban Boxing Federation and I did a study on this and found out that the only injustice is that Africa is over represented to Asia considering the balance in powers between the continents.
Give me a few hours and I will show the numbers I got.

Yes, there are free signups. The latin american countries are not excluded in any way. They simply can't afford to send their boxers to all championships, specially when they are held in Europe or Asia. There are other priorities like trying to hold national championships for all levels and sending the seniors and juniors to international competitions. Many times the World Junior Championships have been held in American countires (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Peru, Argentina, Dominican Republic and now Mexico) thus a large participation from these countries. When they are held in Europe/Asia the participation is almost none, as is almost the case with the World Cadets.
There are so many international competitions today with not only seniors and juniors (I know it's now called youth but can't help myself) but cadets and women (and now also women's juniors/youth). Most european countries can send their teams to all championships but hardly any other country outside Europe participate at all levels, USA being the exception.

So, you're saying that for certain countries, these competitions are basically open invitational? Didn't know that. 8)Yes, there are free signups

I don't know what you are referring to Mel. Any National Association can participate with a full squad (one boxer per weight) at World Championships at all levels. This apply even at most continental championships (except the Pan American Games).
Re: List of boxers qualified for Beijing 2008
An "open invitational" is where any boxer can enter a tournament without having to qualify to be eligible. As examples, our 15-16 year olds have to win a local, regional and national tournament to qualify for the Cadet World Championships. In the past, those boxers going to the Under-19 Worlds have had to qualify through a national tournament. Is this more clear?I don't know what you are referring to Mel. Re: List of boxers qualified for Beijing 2008
AIBA don't demand qualifiers from anybody. It's up to every National Association to decide how they select their team. Thus you can say it's an open invitational contrary to the Olympic Games and Pan American Games where there are reduced number of quotas which have to be won at qualifying tournaments.
